About the Authors
Foreword
O ne of my greatest joys in life is helping people realize and utilize their own potential for wellness. I have been fortunate to be able to live this joy every day for more than three decades. As a board-certified family practice physician and cofounder and director of the Health Integration Center in Torrance and Santa Monica, California, I use a variety of healing practices, including acupuncture, natural hormones, herbal and homeopathic remedies, nutrition, and stress management, to help men and women realize their greatest gift in life—health.
Each and every person has great abilities to become an active participant in his or her own health and well-being—to nurture and take control of one’s own physical, emotional, and spiritual natures—yet many people fail to do so. Too often, people rush to doctors when they experience minor symptoms because they are fearful of what may be “wrong.” Symptoms—be they fever, aches and pains, depression, or a rash—indicate that something may be off balance in people’s bodies or lives. When symptoms come knocking, it’s a good opportunity for individuals to listen to their bodies and learn how they can work on regaining balance and harmony in all three realms of their being.
One way to achieve that balance, or homeostasis, is to tap into the body’s ability to heal itself. Everyone has that ability, and in this book, we present natural ways for you to help your body heal from many different ailments. Rather than run to the doctor every time you get a cold, we show you ways to banish your symptoms and strengthen your immune system. If you’re fretting about back pain, we’ll help you harness your discomfort. Instead of dosing yourself with antibiotics for an ear infection, we offer alternatives that are friendly to the body and that don’t compromise your immune system.
Speaking of antibiotics, I am reminded of the age-old adage familiar to physicians: “The symptoms will abate in a week with antibiotics and in seven days without.” Unfortunately, many doctors seem to forget this truism, and they prescribe antibiotics liberally to patients, even when they are completely inappropriate, such as in the case of the common cold or flu. Why are they inappropriate in these cases? Because antibiotics kill bacteria only, and cold and flu are caused by viruses. Yet many patients will insist their doctors give them antibiotics for these ailments.
In today’s healthcare environment, it’s becoming more and more feasible and practical for men and women to take charge of their own health whenever possible. Why?
Time . Most people are very busy, and finding the time to go to the doctor can be a problem.
The healthcare system itself . Often people must wait days and more commonly weeks to get an appointment with a doctor.
Cost . Natural therapies are very often more inexpensive than over-the-counter or prescription medications.
Side effects . When you take over-the-counter and prescription drugs, you run the risk of experiencing side effects. Natural remedies are associated with a much lower risk, and in many cases there are none.
Empowerment . You can achieve a great sense of satisfaction from taking charge of your own health. It’s your body, and no one knows it better than you do.
Naturally, there are times when you have symptoms that require professional care. For each ailment in this book, we help you determine which symptoms are urgent and when you should seek advice from a knowledgeable healthcare practitioner.
While the majority of this book— Chapters 3 through 11 ( Part II )—discusses how to use natural methods to heal what hurts, it is prefaced by two important chapters. Chapter 1 lays a solid foundation for overall health. It explains how to stay physically, emotionally, and spiritually balanced through good nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices, stress management, and positive attitude. This holistic approach is the only one that can truly bring about health and well-being, because our physical, emotional, and spiritual components work together to make up who we are.
It is all well and good to practice natural medicine and help your body heal naturally. Yet if your body—your foundation—is weak or compromised, because of poor nutrition, bad sleeping habits, lack of exercise, or ill-chosen lifestyle choices, then your efforts to heal naturally, or even conventionally, will not be successful. It’s like an individual with bronchitis who takes slippery elm to stop his hacking cough. The herb can be very effective, but if the individual continues with a poor lifestyle choice—like smoking—he isn’t going to get the relief he’s looking for.
In Chapter 2 , we introduce you to the natural treatments that are mentioned throughout Part II. You’ll learn about herbal and homeopathic remedies and essential oils and how to use them, what to look for when purchasing nutritional supplements, how to do acupressure and reflexology on yourself, and the basics of other self-help therapies. You’ll also learn about the benefits and side effects of some common over-the-counter medications, and how to assemble your own self-care remedy kit with natural items.
Once you’ve finished Chapters 1 and 2 ( Part I ), you’ll be ready to explore Part II , which covers the ailments that may concern you or your loved ones. Included are conditions that affect everywhere from the top of your head—like hair loss and dandruff—to the tips of your toes—like athlete’s foot and smelly
