#1

In Part I, we will examine the problem of control and how, even without intending to, some people may attempt to control us. We will learn why people who attempt to control us often don’t realize how destructive they are. We will also meet a Spellbreaker, a person capable of breaking the spell.

#2

The need to control stems from a force so powerful that it seems like we are under its spell. We must acknowledge this force, which is known as evolution, in order to solve our people-problems.

#3

The force behind oppressive and controlling behaviors is the same force that compels us to live life on planet Earth. If we can recognize and understand this force, we can align ourselves with it to avoid the negative consequences of moving against it.

#4

The problem of people trying to control others is not solved. It creates chaos in the lives of millions of people. This chaos calls us to task.

#5

I have found that people who have indulged in controlling behaviors are often shocked when they realize what they’ve done. They didn’t realize their behaviors were controlling, and they didn’t understand why others reacted so negatively to them.

#6

The problem of oppression is the act of one person hurting another. It can be caused by a number of factors, and it is important that we look directly at the problem and not get sidetracked by other factors.

#7

There are three commonalities among acts against others: they are usually unnecessary and wrong, they originate with a lack of awareness, and they are experienced as horrifying by the victims.

#8

When it comes to acts against others, people are unaware of what is going on behind the scenes. If we can understand what is going on behind the scenes, we can begin to explain people’s actions against others.

#9

Good intentions are not enough to ensure that people’s actions are in line with their values. People can act without considering the consequences for others if their ability to relate is lost.

#10

Some people fail to bring their intentions to fruition because they don’t realize that they are off course. They don’t notice that the scenery is different from what they had expected until they see that the current is taking them off course.

#11

When people are in this state, we not only say that they are beside themselves, but also that they don’t know what they are doing. They are disconnected from their everyday reality. To reconnect, a person may not just get a grip on a table or chair to restore physical balance, but may also try to get a grip on someone around them, wanting them to be an extension of themselves.

#12

As you define yourself, you articulate and affirm your inner reality, including your thoughts, views, opinions, feelings, motives, values, intentions, inclinations, abilities, talents, likes, and dislikes. Your direct experience creates a picture of reality and of yourself in your mind.

#13

The psychic boundary is the line between your inner spiritual, psychological world and the outer world. It delineates all else that is you. You are in charge of what passes through this boundary. When you take in or reject information, you act as the gatekeeper.

#14

When people act against others, they are typically reacting out of backwardness. They are trying to control another person, and when they do, they assault either that person’s psychic boundary or physical boundary, or both.

#15

People who act as if they are beside themselves in ordinary circumstances usually do so only in relation to certain people. When people are disconnected, they are essentially unaware of themselves. We then might say that they are disconnected.

#16

We need our four functions to give us information and make sense of it. Our feeling, intuition, and sensation functions give us knowledge that we actually experience, while our thinking function helps us reason, assimilate, and make sense of the information we get from our other three functions.

#17

When we take in someone else’s definition of us, we believe that their definition is more real than our own. We substitute our own self-definition with someone else’s. We come to know ourselves in a backwards way, from the outside in, not the inside out.

#18

Parents can have a huge influence on their children’s personal realities. If a child’s boundaries are not defended and reinforced, they may succumb to the authority of a parent.
