Sample Book Insights:
#1 The power of food is that it is a very conscious decision. Will I choose a sugary cereal or oatmeal with fruit. Will it be the quick peanut butter and jelly sandwich or the longer-to-make quinoa salad. For most people, there is a nagging doubt underlying these daily food choices, and it whispers, Does this really matter.
#2 The connection between cancer cells and sugar was first discovered in the 1920s by a doctor named Otto Warburg. He noticed that cancer cells get their energy by breaking down unusually large amounts of glucose, and that they breathe anaerobically, without oxygen.
#3 There are two main reasons why Radical Remission survivors eliminate dairy from their diet. The first is that dairy is the breast milk of another animal, and it is packed with hormones and proteins meant to make a baby calf grow. Humans are the only species that drinks the breast milk of another animal.
#4 The final group of foods that Radical Remission survivors eliminate is refined foods, especially refined grains. These foods have a very high glycemic index, meaning their carbohydrates are quickly converted into glucose, which cancer cells love.

#1

The power of food is that it is a very conscious decision. Will I choose a sugary cereal or oatmeal with fruit. Will it be the quick peanut butter and jelly sandwich or the longer-to-make quinoa salad. For most people, there is a nagging doubt underlying these daily food choices, and it whispers, Does this really matter.

#2

The connection between cancer cells and sugar was first discovered in the 1920s by a doctor named Otto Warburg. He noticed that cancer cells get their energy by breaking down unusually large amounts of glucose, and that they breathe anaerobically, without oxygen.

#3

There are two main reasons why Radical Remission survivors eliminate dairy from their diet. The first is that dairy is the breast milk of another animal, and it is packed with hormones and proteins meant to make a baby calf grow. Humans are the only species that drinks the breast milk of another animal.

#4

The final group of foods that Radical Remission survivors eliminate is refined foods, especially refined grains. These foods have a very high glycemic index, meaning their carbohydrates are quickly converted into glucose, which cancer cells love.

#5

To keep blood sugar and insulin levels low and stable, the Radical Remission survivors I study drastically reduce the amount of refined foods they eat and instead try to eat carbohydrates in their whole forms.

#6

It is important to remember that our taste buds do not always know what’s best for us. We still salivate like crazy whenever we smell grease, sugar, or salt, which is why it is so hard for us to resist warm french fries.

#7

Vegetables and fruits are extremely healthy for you, and they contain everything the body needs: vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fiber, glucose, protein, and even healthy fats. In terms of cancer, hundreds of studies have shown that eating vegetables and fruits helps prevent you from getting cancer in the first place.

#8

Fasting helps speed up the detoxification of pesticides, heavy metals, and other toxins from the body. It is considered by many health practitioners to be a natural way of clearing out infections and detoxifying the body.

#9

Fasting helps the body detoxify itself, and cancer patients may want to consider fasting to help rid their bodies of any lingering viruses or bacteria.

#10

The fourth and final change that almost all of my Radical Remission research subjects make is to switch from soda, juice, and milk to drinking approximately eight glasses of water per day. Water is our barest necessity when it comes to health.

#11

Ginni was 60 when she found a lump in her breast. She had breast cancer, which was Stage 3. Her doctor told her that she would need intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Her prognosis was not good.

#12

Ginni courageously refused the second surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, even though there was still cancer present in her breast and lymph nodes. She was afraid of the second surgery because she had read that removing lymph nodes could lead to lymphedema, which is a permanent and painful swelling of the arms and legs.

#13

Losing a lot of weight during a fast is common, and it is usually healthy and safe as long as you are not terribly underweight to begin with. Ginni was not.

#14

Ginni also bought a watercooler for her home and started drinking large quantities of bottled instead of tap water. She cut out all soda, milk, and alcohol, and only drank juice if she juiced it herself.

#15

Ginni’s story demonstrates how fear can lead to unhealthy habits. She was afraid that her cancer might return, so she stuck to her new diet.

#16

Some people were able to treat their cancer with healthy food and water, while others were not able to.

#17

In 1999, John was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which was surgically removed. His PSA levels remained high, and in 2005, it began to travel outside of his prostate. His doctors told him that he would have to go back on the hormone therapy and chemotherapy if the cancer ever formed a metastatic tumor somewhere else in his body.

#18

John’s story is similar to that of Ginni. He decided to postpone the recommended hormone therapy in order to give dietary change a try, and for the next six months he kept a careful diary of everything he ate.

#19

John learned that there is no single type of prostate or breast cancer, but rather various subtypes that respond differently to different treatments. He developed a very particular diet to keep his PSA under control.

#20

John eliminated all dairy products and simple carbohydrates, and he has never gained weight since. He also increased his exercise regimen to daily, and lost twelve pounds.

#21

John’s cancer was caused by his excessive consumption of sugar and his prolonged period of intense stress. He would have diagnosed his cancer using a combination of ultrasound, PSA, and other blood tests rather than a needle biopsy.

#22

The four dietary changes that can help you heal are reducing sweet, meat, dairy, and refined food products in your diet, eating at least one vegetable or fruit with every meal, prioritizing what organic foods to buy, and starting your morning with a glass of filtered water with lemon juice to detoxify your body.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

Radical Remission patients take control of their healing by taking an active role in their health, being willing to make changes in their lives, and dealing with resistance.

#2

The body is a machine that can sometimes break, but it is also an organism that is extremely sophisticated and can function well if you take care of it. In the world of Western medicine, we have been trained to be such good patients that we have forgotten we are the ones driving our cars (bodies).
