Description

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book.
Sample Book Insights:
#1 The human body needs light to be healthy. The human body needs different types of light to function well, and these light types are crucial for our health. We have developed a light deficiency and toxicities that are having a massive impact on our health.
#2 The most common light-related health problems are vitamin D deficiency and circadian rhythm disruption, which are caused by inadequate and improper light exposure. Red and near-infrared light deficiency is also a problem, and has widespread effects on our brain and organ function, immune system, energy levels, mood, neurotransmitter balance, and hormone levels.
#3 We are designed to need light to be healthy, but since we spend almost all our time indoors, we are massively deficient in sun exposure, which causes major problems for our health. Red and near-infrared light are able to penetrate deep into the body and cells, and have healing effects on the cells.
#4 Red and near-infrared light are not some weird technology that benefits us for some random reason. These wavelengths of light come from the sun, and it turns out that our body has evolved over millions of years to be capable of utilizing them to help power up our cells.

The human body needs light to be healthy. The human body needs different types of light to function well, and these light types are crucial for our health. We have developed a light deficiency and toxicities that are having a massive impact on our health.

Insights from Chapter 2

#1

There are multiple mechanisms by which red and near-infrared light affects the body, and they all work together to promote health and well-being. They affect different cells differently, and can even irradiate the blood and affect things like inflammatory mediators and immune cells.

#2

There are many mechanisms by which red and near-infrared light can affect the body, and I will only list the most notable here. If you would like to see a complete medical textbook-level in-depth discussion of all of them, I recommend getting Hamblin et al. ’s new 2018 textbook Low-Level Light Therapy: Photobiomodulation.

#3

Red and near-infrared light has been shown in research to affect all of the following compounds and pathways: hormones, neurotransmitters, cytokines, cellular adhesion molecules, enzymes, and much more.

#4

There are many different types of mitochondria in our cells, and they all communicate with each other and the nucleus of the cell via mitochondrial signaling. Light-sensitive ion channels are also located in our cells, and they control the flow of various ions.

#5

Several other factors have been identified as being involved in the effects of red/NIR light therapy, including heat-shock proteins, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and fibroblast growth factor.

#6

Red/NIR light has been shown to have positive effects on many different types of cells. It can reduce inflammation, promote cell growth, and even protect cells from dying.

#7

Red/NIR light has been shown to improve brain function, muscle performance, and adaptations to exercise. It can also dull pain by blocking conduction at nerve fibers.

#8

Red and NIR light have two central mechanisms that benefit cellular function and overall health: stimulating ATP production in the mitochondria through interacting with a photoreceptor called cytochrome c oxidase, and creating a temporary, low-dose metabolic stress that ultimately builds up the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and cell defense systems of the cell.

#9

The mitochondria are the life-yielding, energy-yielding engines within the cells of all living things. Our bodies are constantly producing and using massive amounts of ATP energy to fuel every function in the body, from breathing to thinking to lifting a dumbbell.

#10

Because we don’t get enough red light anymore, we are paying the price in the very core of our cells themselves – our mitochondria, the energy generators in our cells. This has dire consequences for our health because we need red and near-infrared light therapy to generate energy efficiently.
