Sample Book Insights:
#1 When I was pregnant with my son, I felt a sense of his individual development already underway. I wondered if his personality traits were due to the conditions his parents experienced while in the womb.
#2 The field of fetal origins is generating a lot of excitement among scientists. They believe that the prenatal period is where many of the springs of health and well-being are found.
#3 The nine months of pregnancy are now the focus of intense interest and excitement, as the fetus is not an inert being but an active and dynamic creature that responds and even adapts to conditions inside and outside its mother’s body.
#4 The notion of prenatal influences may conjure up frivolous attempts to enrich the fetus, like playing Mozart through headphones placed on a pregnant belly. But in reality, the nine-month long process of shaping and molding that takes place in the womb is far more consequential than that.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

When I was pregnant with my son, I felt a sense of his individual development already underway. I wondered if his personality traits were due to the conditions his parents experienced while in the womb.

#2

The field of fetal origins is generating a lot of excitement among scientists. They believe that the prenatal period is where many of the springs of health and well-being are found.

#3

The nine months of pregnancy are now the focus of intense interest and excitement, as the fetus is not an inert being but an active and dynamic creature that responds and even adapts to conditions inside and outside its mother’s body.

#4

The notion of prenatal influences may conjure up frivolous attempts to enrich the fetus, like playing Mozart through headphones placed on a pregnant belly. But in reality, the nine-month long process of shaping and molding that takes place in the womb is far more consequential than that.

#5

The belief that the fetus is a perfect parasite, skimming the nutrients it needs from its mother’s body, has been debunked by the science of fetal origins. The fact that the fetus is exposed to the same environment as adults, with alcohol and cigarettes, polluted air and water, industrial chemicals untested for safety, means that individuals are more vulnerable to environmental toxins during pregnancy than at any other time in their lives.

#6

The field of fetal origins is producing knowledge that will help us better understand the origins of our traits and characteristics. It is a profoundly important development that will change the way we view human nature.

#7

I’ll examine changing notions of pregnancy as a student of culture and history. In 1802, the English poet and philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge immersed himself in a book by physician Thomas Browne, which stated that we are all out of the computation of our age and that every man is some months elder than he believes himself to be.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The first time I realized I was pregnant, I was standing in the aisle of a supermarket. I had to consider what I was eating, and whether it was safe for me to eat.

#2

I’m pregnant again, and once again, I’m anxious about what I’m eating. I remember how the doctors and scientists of the past have studied what pregnant women eat in order to influence the health of their children.

#3

The first scientific advice for pregnant women about their diets was given in the late nineteenth century, when researchers turned their attention to the subject. They found that pregnant women should gain very little weight, and that the baby would be fine even if the woman ate little.

#4

As the 1900s went on, avoiding excessive weight gain became a preoccupation of many doctors, and so of their patients. This was due to the fact that the intrauterine environment provided by a woman who was overweight or obese could cause problems for the fetus well before birth.

#5

The intrauterine environment may be as important as genes or family eating habits in passing on a tendency to obesity. It may be that the food choices women make during pregnancy influence the later preferences of their offspring.

#6

The research suggests that food can pose a threat not only to one’s waistline but to the health of one’s future child. It could be used to add maternal guilt to the heavy emotional freight already borne by food.

#7

The food a pregnant or lactating woman eats is educating her offspring in the flavor principles of her culture.
