A CKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The Lord has been so gracious to give me many wise counselors and helpers who have directly assisted me in the writing of this book. I can only mention a few:
Dr. Russell Moore whose encouraging words and helpfulness have been of great benefit; Dr. Joel Beeke whose reading, comments, and recommendations have added gravitas; Dianne Chanski whose mind and example have together provided my most frequently consulted human source; Dorothy Chanski Martin, my Priscilla-like mother, who always had time to talk with her third born; Marcie Filcik whose editorial work and servant s heart have been precious and priceless; Mary Jo Haab whose reviewing, even through a first trimester s queasiness, was very helpful; Randy Stinson whose continued interest was inspiring; Elaine Wallace whose Northern Ireland proofreading added polish; Craig Sietsema and Jon Vannette who encouraged me to write a sequel.
I NTRODUCTION
How did I get into this situation? I asked myself as I clung to the tower s exterior, about forty feet above the ground. I really thought I d have no problem scaling this sixty-foot wall at the Baptist Camp at Clear Lake, Iowa. But the ninety-three degree temperature and the corn-growing humidity were taking their toll on me. Sweat poured down my soaking wet face onto my drenched t-shirt. Slippery moist and burning fingers were crying, Uncle, as they strove to grip the slick handholds. My heart pounded for relief.
I thought it would be a great father and son adventure. Eleven-year-old Nathan and I would side-by-side accomplish our first wall-climb attempts. While strapping on our rope harnesses, it appeared a bit more formidable than the view from across the lake, but I wasn t worried. I told Nathan, Remember, no pain, no gain. We can do this!
But now, twenty minutes into the ascent, I wasn t so sure about my own performance. Come on, Mark, I thought. You re a long-distance runner. You lift some weights. You re in good shape. What s the matter? Besides that, look at Elizabeth. She s nearing the top. Are you gonna let her out-climb you?
Elizabeth is Pastor Mike s wife. She s a petite woman with a very gentle and quiet spirit . In appearance, she s the epitome of soft femininity. But with Elizabeth, there s more than meets the eye. Her father was a linebacker for the University of Northern Iowa, and had obviously passed on to his daughter a hefty portion of his drive and tenacity. My nephew had told me that she had been his high school English teacher, and that though she herself looked like a high school freshman, she subdued and ruled her classes like a Marine drill sergeant. Nobody dared to mess with Mrs. A.
This makes me think of another Elizabeth in American history. Her name was Elizabeth Cummins Jackson, the great grandmother of Lieutenant General Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson. Stonewall Jackson was a great hero in both the Mexican-American and the U.S. Civil Wars. In the Battle of Bull Run, all seemed hopeless for the Confederate troops, but Jackson rallied his brigade of Virginians. His biographer, R. L. Dabney, wrote, His eye blazed with that fire which no other eye could meet; his countenance was clothed with a serene and assured smile. 1
When his colleague Confederate General Bee reported in despairing bitterness that his own ranks had been shattered by the Federal onslaught, Jackson rose to the occasion:
Then, said Jackson, calm and curt, we will give them the bayonet. Bee seemed to catch the inspiration of his determined will, and, galloping back to the broken fragments of his over-tasked command, exclaimed to them, There is Jackson standing like a stone wall. Rally behind the Virginians. Let us determine to die here, and we will conquer. Follow me. From that time Jackson s was known as the Stone-wall Brigade, a name henceforward immortal, and belonging to all the ages. 2
Stonewall Jackson s legendary courage and determination didn t simply fall from heaven . They can profoundly be traced back to the plucky spirit of his great grandmother , Elizabeth Cummins, whose bravery and grit were passed on by example and instruction. Dabney describes Elizabeth as a woman of strong stature with understanding and energies corresponding to the vigor of her bodily frame. 3
When the young couple (Great Grandfather John and Elizabeth) emigrated to Northwest (Virginia), the Indians were still contesting the occupancy of its teeming valleys with the white men. The colonists were compelled to provide for their security by building stockade-forts, into which they retreated with their families and cattle at every alarm of a savage incursion. It is the tradition that, in more than one of these sieges, Elizabeth Cummins proved herself, though a woman , to have the stomach and mettle of a man, and rendered valuable service by aiding and inspiriting the resistance of the defenders. In her industry and enterprise was realized King Lemuel s description of the ways of the virtuous woman: She considers a field, and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard (Proverbs 31:16). Several patents (deeds) are still in existence, conveying to her, in her own name, lands which were afterwards the valuable possessions of her posterity. They have usually claimed that the characteristics of their race were largely inherited from her; that it was her sterling integrity, vigorous intellect, and directness of purpose which gave them their type Hers were stamina, both of the physical and moral constitution, fitting her to rear a race that were men indeed. 4
Oh, how desperately our generation needs a race that are men indeed. And how desperately we need such strong women to rear them!
Lest you dismiss this Elizabeth Jackson as out of step with the Bible s standard of femininity and womanhood ( a gentle and quiet spirit a weaker vessel -1 Peter 3:4, 7), remember the further words of Lemuel s mother regarding her inspired blueprint of a noble woman who fears the Lord:
She girds herself with strength and makes her arms strong Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future (Proverbs 31:17, 25, emphasis added).
The false stereotype of a Christian woman being a helpless and frail mouse, who passively shades herself under the parasol of her soft femininity, and adoringly waits for her husband to do all the heavy lifting, is shattered by the Scriptures.
Yes, the godly Christian woman wears beautiful ornaments that are precious in the sight of God (1 Peter 3:4). But her jewelry is not only the necklace of a gentle and quiet spirit, but also the bracelets of strength and dignity.
Charles Bridges comments on the strength of the Proverbs 31 ideal: Christian courage and resolution lift her above appalling difficulties. 5
Regarding her proverbial strength, Geor
