Michelle McKinney Hammond knows both the power of temptation and the grace that God can give us to overcome it. F ROM THE B EGINNING
T AKE ME IN, TENDER WOMAN. TAKE ME IN , for goodness sake. Take me in, tender woman, sighed the snake. This popular song of the 1960s, sung by the late Oscar Brown, Jr., spun a woeful tale of an unassuming woman who allowed herself to be sucked in by the smooth conversation of a wily snake. She happened to stumble upon him as he lay frozen in the snow, and his piteous cries for help wiped out her sound reasoning that his bite could be lethal if she took him into her home. He reassured her that his gratitude would override his nature to bite, and being the kind sort that she was, she took the snake in to be warmed by the fire. Well, the rest of the story is predictable enough. Fully recovered, the snake bit the woman, and when she reminded him of his promise not to strike at her, he calmly countered, You knew I was a snake when you took me in. (Sounds like a player to me!)
Indeed he was a snake, yet he had painted himself as something else-a helpless frozen being whose character had been transformed by the hardship he had suffered. He knew a na ve victim when he saw one. He knew exactly what to say and what to leave to supposition. This is the genius of temptation at work. After all, it is the great Suppose that gets most of us in trouble.
I didn t know I never thought and It just happened are the famous last words heard repeatedly by the victims of a fall that has been craftily designed by another infamous snake, Satan himself.
Since the beginning of time, a snake has always been a snake. His character remains true-flexible, calculating, and deadly. With this knowledge confirmed as fact, man has continued to have conversations with the snake for generations to the same end. Echoes of dismay have resounded through the ages, for the seduction of the snake has continued to ensnare all who stop to consider his offerings. How does he continue to wreak havoc in the lives of those who seemingly recognize him for what he is yet fail to shun his entreaties?
The answer is simple: Snakes love to lure their victims into the shadows-the shadows of ignorance, where curiosity and na vet grow wild and free. Where perversions of the truth roam unbridled and where feelings of entitlement wind like vines around the hearts of those teetering on the precipice of rebellion. This is where the snake works best and paints his greatest illusions. And this is where men stumble and fall, unable to see their way clearly.
Perhaps you recognize a snake when you see one, but the Bible urges us to not be ignorant of his devices. Perhaps you are one who sees the trap, but still gets sucked in by its allure. You find yourself saying yes when every other instinct within you screams no. The regret after the deed is done is overwhelming as you grope for the answer to why you allowed yourself to be seduced. Hopefully this book will shed some light on your path and help you to avoid the snares of temptation.
