Endorsements

“Dan'l Markham has written a book that will challenge the presuppositions of every believer. If you're wondering what God meant when He said; ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel’, read this book. I strongly commend this seminal book to all believers.”
Peter J. Iliyn, North American Director, Youth With A Mission
--------------------
"Wonderfully engaging, deeply challenging. An important read for anyone who desires to walk more fully in Christ's commands."
Bill Myers, bestselling author, Eli and The God Hater
--------------------
“In The Lost Mandate , Dan'l Markham combines a clear eyed understanding of the Bible with a frank relating of personal experience. Readers will walk away from the book having had the chance to meet an authentic Christian endeavoring to understand his life experience through the lens of Biblical perspective. You will agree and disagree. You will question and wonder. In the end you will have thought deeply about what it means to be "real" in one's walk with God.”
Jeff McNair, Ph.D., Director, Disability Studies Program,
California Baptist University
--------------------

“ The Lost Mandate is a much needed challenge to humbly and practically embrace the Biblical edict to reach out to those who are damaged, hurting, and less fortunate. This is particularly timely given the last 10 years of war, wounded, widowed, unemployed, and economically destitute...and God's intent to use us as part of healing and restoration.”
Maj. Gen. Mastin M. Robeson, USMC(Ret)
--------------------

“It was with varied emotions that I traveled the pages of this work and found a kindred heart and love for Jesus in the author Dan'l Markham. Dan'l is evidence of God's great grace and love for people. I have known this for many years about Dan'l and the international ministry he has accomplished with Joni and Friends. It blesses my heart and the world of Disability Ministry that Dan'l has taken the time to journal his journey. Those of us who have experience with people affected by disabilities in our families and those who by God's grace are willing to serve people affected by disabilities this book comes as a welcomed friend with truthful words.”
Dr. Mark Mucklow, DMin, Senior Pastor,
First Southern Baptist Church of Glendale, AZ
---------------------
"I can't imagine how many times I've read the Gospels and never noticed all the people with disabilities. Sick or possessed, yes. But how did I never make the connection that Jesus ministered to the disabled? Thanks to Dan’l Markham's new book I probably won't be the only one to have my eyes opened."
Jim Cavnar, President, Cross International
---------------------
“They are almost ‘a silent majority’, the largest under-reached people group - the disabled. In his book, The Lost Mandate , Dan’l Markham issues the challenge to reach out with the Word as well as deeds. If you have a heart for mission and a passion for God's Word, this is a must read.”

Bob Hoskins, Founder, OneHope

“The Lost Mandate is a challenge from one who has ‘walked the walk’ of Christian service and gospel ministry. He has worked in a multitude of places to carry the Word of God and real practical help to those in need. This book will help you to consider your next level of service as you hear from Dan'l's stories from the journey of his ministry. In particular, he gives us a biblical context for disabilities and the church. It is a good and interesting read.”
Andrew J. Peterson, Ph.D.
President Reformed Theological Seminary, Virtual Campus
---------------------
“You cannot read this book without being compelled to reach out to one or more of the 1 billion persons with disabilities in our world. As Dan’l Markham testifies, in reaching out to these neighbors of ours you will be radically changed. Having the privilege to equip thousands of volunteers for nursing home ministry, I can testify that embracing the principles and practical steps in The Lost Mandate will cause you to deepen your relationship with Jesus. These will also give you purpose that will impact you and your friends for eternity.”

President, God Cares Ministry

First comes my wife, Colette, and my seven beautiful daughters - Sarah, Deidre, Angela, Claudia, Hannah, Lucy and Sally, who put up with husband and dad being preoccupied with research and writing for seemingly endless evenings and weekends. Thanks ladies. You’re the best. Then there’s my good friend, Steve Appel, always an encourager to continue working on this book as a labor of love. And I can’t miss Pastor Brent and Rachel Olstad of Ashland, Oregon, and their beautiful children. Brent and Rachel are stellar examples of parents of a child affected by disability. They graciously provided their editing skills for this manuscript.
Dedication
While my mother, Mary Ann Markham, who has gone on to be with the Lord, looms big in my heart and mind, she of all people would understand the reason I dedicate this book to Rick Eastin of Fresno, California. Rick is an outstanding representative of all people affected by disability who usually out of the limelight continually persevere for Christ in the face of daily adversity. Rick is also an extraordinary example to those of us who are able-bodied and have little or no clue about continual adversity. Dude, you’re awesome!

Foreword - Before You Begin...

The other day I was reading a newsletter from my missionary-friend, Margaret, who is serving among people with disabilities in Africa. When I read her second paragraph, I was moved to tears: “Cristina is disabled; a death sentence here in Tanzania. Her family discarded Cristina’s body on the side of a dirt road to let fate decide what should happen next. Finding her unprotected, predatory men found Cristina and abused her…leaving her sitting in a pile of her own waste when missionaries finally found her.”
Cristina’s plight is not uncommon in the Majority World. The World Health Organization reports that there are over one billion people with disabilities and 80% of them live in desperate poverty. We can easily gloss over such a statistic, until we are stopped short by a story like Cristina’s.
This is why I am so excited about my friend, Dan’l Markham’s new book The Lost Mandate: A Christ Command Revealed . Dan’l and I served as co-laborers in the global disability movement for many years through our work together at the Joni and Friends International Disability Center. His passion for the last and the “least of the brethren” was tireless; time and again, I saw him go the extra mile and invest the extra effort to ensure that families affected by disability, whether here in the States or around the world, received help and hope from Christ.
The Lost Mandate is an insightful analysis of our Savior’s words in Luke 14 to “Go out… find the disabled, lame and blind… and bring them in.” Dan’l’s research is a valuable contribution to the disability ministry movement and will be an encouragement to families and indiv
