In my experience as a writer it s not often that a publishing company believes so much in an author that they wrap their arms around your work, encourage you while you re writing, and help sustain you as you market your work. I m blessed to be working with the wonderful people at Harvest House Publishers. The president, Bob Hawkins, and the entire staff with whom I ve worked have been nothing but tender when I ve been corrected, wise in their decisions, careful to deliver the Word of God accurately, zealous in seeking suggested outlets to market the works, sincere in their dedication to produce a quality product, innovative in their strategic plan for the books-and all this is done with godly integrity.
If I begin to name names I would be hurt if I accidently left anyone out, so I won t do that. There is someone I must name because he isn t a Harvest House employee, and that s my editor Thomas Womack. Thomas, thank you for reading my ideas and material and organizing them into a meaningful and logical progression so people can be helped.
I d also like to thank David Van Diest, the best literary agent in the world.
A word of thanks to my son, who helped teach me how to walk in faith. His words to me were, If you pray, Mama, why worry? In other words, Prayer and faith go hand-in-hand so where is your faith?
I sincerely appreciate all of you who work with me to make the Word of God come to life in the lives of the readers and viewers.

What Is Faith?
Over a decade ago I was sitting in a room discussing with some friends the question of faith. One of them said she was sick of hearing about faith because it was so ambiguous. Another said she didn t even like the word faith because nobody can ever really define it. And the conversation continued to the tune of I don t understand the word faith.
That conversation haunted me off and on for many years because I was stunned that people felt that way. I was even more perplexed when I learned that faith is found 58 times in the King James Version s Old Testament and 280 in the New Testament. Faith must be pretty important!
I was also confused by Hebrews 11:6, which states that without faith it is impossible to please [God] ( NKJV ). And the definition of faith in Hebrews 11:1 didn t make a lot of sense to me either: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen ( NKJV ). To help my understanding, I memorized Romans 1:16-17: I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, The just shall live by faith ( NKJV ).
With this lack of understanding and all these question marks about faith, don t you think it s about time we learn everything we can about faith so we can apply it more confidently to our lives? Through Christ we ve come this far by faith. Let s continue! Paul says in Romans 12:3, For I say through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith ( NKJV ). In this book we will explore what faith is so we can more deeply understand how we can lean on the loving arms of the Faith-giver, knowing that he is able and willing to sustain us in every situation.
As you read, please pay close attention to the areas of your life that may cause you to question your faith. Linger there until you are assured that through faith in Jesus Christ you have freedom of mind and spirit in the situation. God is the Faith-giver, but he is also the Faith-keeper and the Faith-sustainer. He is the Faithful One!

Wearing Baby Shoes
I love shoes. I ve got a closet full of them. In fact, I buy clothes just to go with my shoes! Right now I ve got shoes in mind because I m thinking about our journey through life and the shoes we wear as we walk along the pathway. I m wondering what those shoes would say if shoes could talk. What stories would they tell?
Would your shoes speak of how you ve walked through the valley of the shadow of death? Would they relate how you ve trudged through graveyards of confusion? Would they tell of your travels in regions of sadness, and hurt, and grief, and trauma?
What would your shoes say?
And where will our shoes be taking you and me as we step forward into the future? What joys, what hardships, what struggles, what challenges, and what adventures are we about to walk into?
Your Desire-and Mine Too
Whatever s to come, I want to tell you that because of everything God has taught me in my many years, there s something I can say with more certainty than ever:
God, I m ready to walk in faith!
I ve been through many trials and tribulations, but here I am today ready to walk, willing to walk, and hoping to walk forever in faith. I know that s your desire as well because you ve opened this book. So I want to thank you for sharing this time with me as we strengthen our faith from the Word of God.
Because I m a visual person, I have to write things down-and so I invite you to do the same. In the pages to come, whenever you encounter questions that we ll be considering together, please take a moment to reflect on your thoughts and situation and write down your best answer in the space that s provided. I know you ll be glad you did because that s the best way to truly retain what you re learning.
Baby Shoes
Baby shoes have got to be some of the cutest things we ever see, aren t they? You may not remember when black patent leather high-tops were considered the very finest in baby shoes, but I do. I wore shoes like that! Let me tell you more about that time in my life, including some things that took me quite a while to discover.
When I was in my thirties, I went on a mission trip-my first venture outside the United States. To obtain a passport, I needed a birth certificate, and I didn t have one. So I went down to the Bureau of Vital Statistics to try to get a copy of it. When I gave them the name I grew up with, they could find no record that matched it.
It took some digging around before we finally discovered that my real last name-the one I received legally at birth-was not the same as the name I grew up with. The confusion arose out of the circumstances surrounding my birth. It took place in 1941, and my mother was an unwed teenager. (I ll tell you more about that later.) Eventually I had to take legal steps to clear up the records and become lawfully on paper the person I thought I always was.
Oh, but let me tell you something I m assured of: God always knew who I was! And he never gave me the labels that people often give to a child born out of wedlock. I love God s truth about me-and about all of us-that s found in Psalm 139:13-17. These words from David are indeed an encouragement for me and I hope for you:
