For every woman who has desired a mentor. When you have no one to walk with through the difficult places in life, the words of those who have traveled those same paths become gold to help you follow the yellow brick road and lead you to a safe place. It is true there is nothing new under the sun. What happens now has happened before, and others have learned the lesson you re about to learn. Listen well and take their advice. Perhaps you can avoid some needless trials. That is wisdom that leads to a life well lived.

Faith Loves Company
T hrough the years many Bible stories have struck me as mini adventures that I ve seen mirrored in my own life. Okay, to be quite honest, a few of them had me scratching my head in wonder. Perhaps that s when it struck me that God was sharing these stories with me so that I would find myself in His story of people who learned about Him-His love for them and His power to work out difficult circumstances.
Through the Bible, God gives you and me intimate glimpses into the very private lives of the men and women He chose to reveal Himself to. And I must say their stories have left me begging for more. I m a bit nosy and creative by nature, so images swirl in my mind as the stories unfold-especially the ones involving women from every walk of life who encountered God and were stretched beyond their resources or what they dared to believe. I wonder how they weathered the storms. How they processed their trials. How they felt when their faith was at the breaking point.
I want to know their very real emotions in the midst of circumstances that, in many cases, should have sent them over the edge. I can so relate because they re kind of like some of the situations I ve found myself in. I imagine you ve been through difficult times like that too. What did these women of Bible times learn? What was the point of the trials God allowed them to go through? What can we learn from them? What hope can we gain from their lives that will help us in ours?
People say hindsight is better than no sight at all. Perhaps that s true. I believe we often have the choice to learn by wisdom or by tribulation. Small wonder the book of Proverbs admonishes us to get an understanding in all our getting. Through the many proverbs, God tells us that getting an understanding and utilizing His knowledge and wisdom in our lives will bring the things we truly desire in the end with lasting blessings that will make us rich and add no sorrow. The wealth gained from lessons well learned can save us from making costly mistakes.
The more I pondered the lives of my sister friends in Scripture, the more I wanted to dig in and glean treasures from their trials and find the diamonds among the tears they cried. Although it was a different era, the underlying challenges in the trials they faced are no different than many of the ones you and I encounter. Everything from dealing with in-law drama to championing a husband whose dreams seem farfetched. Struggling with being the other woman or knowing how to recognize Mr. Right. Does any of this sound familiar? Or how about knowing someone whose lies put your life or livelihood at risk? Or dealing with the pain of being a widow, the challenges of being a leader in a male-dominated business sector, or being married to a powerful man whose faith doesn t match your own?
I m sure that if you and I sat down with the women in the Bible, they would give us an earful! Through their various experiences I believe we can discover the valuable reasons and lessons in the struggles they wrestled with and the ones we face. And better yet, I believe they offer us hope in our everyday challenges and even in seemingly impossible circumstances.
It s been said that misery loves company, but I think faith does too! And seeing that we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses who have walked before us on the trails we re now following, we can be assured we ll also make it because they did. I m confident that among the many gems of wisdom we can glean from them, we ll also discover two constant and comforting themes woven into the fabric of every story they share: God is always present and God is always faithful.
So grab a cup of tea and join me in reading these personal letters from amazing women of the Bible. Let s celebrate the sisterhood of overcoming together as we discover the wisdom and timeless advice they offer.
