Description

It has always been somewhat of a mystery to me why so little has been written on the subject of eternal marriage, not as romantic fantasy but as actual metaphysical fact. It seems to me that if we actually look into our heart of hearts, eternal marriage is the greatest of all ideas and realitites that we can embrace. I have always believed this and so this undertaking is being offered. "When a man and a woman come into a relationship in the spirit of eternal marriage, they together are in the truth. It is this truth that we shall know for it is here to be known. Indeed, we can now speak it and in our speaking, we are set free for there is no greater solace for our souls." The Eternal Marriage

Note to the Reader:
The Eternal Marriage was written in 1992. Later it was combined with three other writings into Man, Woman, and God and published in 1994. The writing is a bit rough in places. I was only in my early forties at the time. But there are some real jewels to be found throughout as is often the case with original work. Also, the use of the masculine and feminine could be smoother. Sometimes I use man, mankind, him, his, etc., to mean both the man and woman. In any embodiment of text, that takes time to work out.

Introduction
The purpose of this writing is to explore the possibility of eternal marriage. Initially, I had envisioned a short work on this one subject but it occurred to me that the arenas of truth and creativity must be offered and substantiated as an opening for the ideal of eternal marriage. The idea of eternal marriage is so abstract that, I believe, we can’t even view it without some clarity on the issue of truth and creativity, which are not easy ideas to understand and incorporate into our lives.
With this thought in mind, I have divided this work into three parts: Man, Woman, and Truth; Creating Together; and The Eternal Marriage. Each part overlaps the other, so there is some redundancy, but I want to be sure it is understood that they all contribute to the whole picture.
Part 1 Man, Woman, and Truth

“And Ye Shall Know the Truth…”
One of the great verses in the Bible, John 8:32, reads: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. I have often wondered, “When, when are we going to know the truth?’ Are we going to know the truth next year, or one hundred years from now? Many today suggest that there isn’t any truth to know, at least not in some concrete, absolute, or metaphysical sense. We now have the added confusion of not knowing if there is even a truth to know.
Others suggest that there is a truth but, unfortunately, it is not one that we can ever know for, it is claimed, we do not possess the mental capacity of ever fathoming it. Why then even suggest such a thing?
And then there are those who suggest truth is strictly personal, subjective, or relative. This is much like the claim that there isn’t any absolute or universal truth—“What is true for you might not be true for me.” But these subjectivists cannot even defend their “position” that truth is subjective. All they can do is attempt to water down the idea of truth to the point where it has little relevance in our lives.
When Jesus said, “And ye shall know the truth…”, I wonder if he meant that there really wasn’t a truth to know or that there was a truth but not one we could ever know or that whatever truth may be, it is solely subjective. Or did Jesus simply mean just as he said, And ye shall know the truth…? It is the truth that we shall know , the absolute and ultimate truth. To suggest anything else is but a waste of time.
Now, I understand that just because Jesus claimed there to be a truth does not in itself make it so. But it does not prove otherwise either. At the least, we have the spoken words of a man that most of the world considers a great spiritual teacher. And this man tells us that we shall know the truth. Surely we ought to pause in consideration.
Let us do a quick tracing of the truth to see if we can better ascertain where we are today. We can begin with the question, “Who first came up with the idea of truth?” I don’t know that we can identify any one such person who thought to himself, “Ah, what an interesting idea, the truth.” The idea of the truth, I believe, was subsumed in the concept of monotheism, which meant one God. What one God referred to in man’s consciousness was a one order . The idea that there could be a one order to things also suggested the possibility that man could comprehend it. Once man was able to conceive of the possibility of a metaphysical order, he could then speak of an absolute or universal truth. The truth was the metaphysical order. Religiously, we have called this order/truth God. Other terms often used are universal, absolute, ultimate, or supreme. The implication here is that there is a one ultimate order/truth and that order/truth is what is. It is what we call reality in that it is real . It is real in that it really is what is.
Maybe the more important issue here is what exactly is the truth? One place we can look for an answer is religion. The various religions of the world are formulated around what they, certain people, deem to be the truth. Each religion has been founded on a claim of truth. Someone has a revelation of “how it is” and thus a religion is founded by the believers of this revelation. Revealed truth is the center point of religion. Granted, it is most difficult to substantiate revealed truth (which is why it is called “revealed”) but the claim of truth is quite clear.
Philosophy is much different in its approach to truth. It doesn’t begin from a metaphysical claim of truth. Philosophy originated as an inquiry into “what is.” The early philosophical claim was not I know the truth but I can know the truth . The task became to develop a method of inquiry to which one could come to the truth. Philosophy is open-ended in this respect. It is as concerned for its process of inquiry as it is for its discovery of truth. Because of this, philosophy added the subject of epistemology (how one can know) to the metaphysical domain of religion.
Unfortunately, neither religion nor philosophy has been able to deliver on the truth. Today, both fields are held in disdain. On the rise is what I call the “New Age” movement which essentially holds truth as subjective. These believers view the old religious and philosophical approaches as being incomplete. They question the whole attempt to try and “capture” the truth. They would say that the religious attempt to “believe” in the truth and the philosophical pursuit to try and “conceptualize” the truth are mispremised. Truth is not a belief or a conception but an experience, is it not? They might further add that belief systems or metaphysical conceptions of thought are the problem in that they separate people into groups. They are exclusive by nature rather than inclusive, or so it is claimed. In line with their subjectivity, they would say that truth is just a personal experience. This line of thought is somewhat in line with Eastern thought which gives great weight to “experience.”
Unfortunately, the idea that truth can only be experienced does not really say much. Experience is not something that comes to us neutrally. We interpret our experience thereby giving meaning to it. And we do so from our conception of reality (our belief system) that we hold as the truth—even if that conception is mistaken! We can do nothing else—existence (or survival) demands consciousness and consciousness demands a conception of reality. We all hold to our own truth as correct and ultimate, and this includes the subjectivists as well. This denial of an absolute truth is why, after an exciting start, the New Age movement has begun to fragment and lose its way. In the last analysis we cannot deny the truth for it is what is, and if we deny what is we also deny ourselves. At this point it might be best to say, the truth believed is not the truth, the truth experienced is not the truth, the truth believed and experienced is known.
The time to know the truth is at hand. There is really only one time in which to know it. That time is now . To know the truth tomorrow will not suffice. Those who claim that there isn’t any truth or that we can never know the truth or that the truth is purely subjective are essentially saying that the truth is not for the now. Well then, when is its time? When are we to know it if not now? I suggest that the truth can only be known in the now. Anyone who says otherwise can only be attempting in some way to deny the truth, an ultimate disservice to the truth and to ourselves.
