The Way to Victory James Robison
T helma Wells understands what too few Christians comprehend: The real battle affecting everything in our lives is waged in the invisible realm. The spiritual influences and impact of the realm of darkness and deception not only distract believers, but lead them far too often into recurring defeat.
Old Testament prophet Jeremiah clearly emphasized that God s chosen people are led away captive by the adversary. Isaiah said the tormentors influence you to lie down and become a smooth road for them to trample on (see Isaiah 51:23). Visit a typical church and you ll see people marching in and out as though they are held hostage or, in some instances, appear to be in a chain gang. Where is the freedom?
Solomon said we are often bound by the cords of our own iniquity. Our weaknesses and sinful tendencies are points of obvious vulnerability where the enemy fiercely attacks. Satan has in his grasp the lives of all unbelievers because, as Jesus said, they are of our father, the devil (John 8:44), and Paul said they are by nature the children of wrath (Ephesians 2:3). Thus, the enemy is focusing his fiercest attack not against the unbeliever already by nature doing his will, but rather on the host of believers-on Christians. Because we re often unaware of this reality, many Christians don t understand that their thoughts are often not their own. They are suggestions of the enemy. When these thoughts and feelings of hurt, bitterness, or lust take root, they become flaming arrows. People often burn with such thoughts and feelings.
Many believers are suffering because of unfortunate circumstances in their childhoods. Because these wounds have never healed, the people are continually downtrodden. Some Old Testament prophets use the illustration of birds of prey attacking the vulnerable sheep. Wolves also always attack the most vulnerable in the flock. A careful reading of the book of Lamentations will reveal what Thelma has come to know, and what all believers must see: When God s people are continually defeated, we must understand what most people even in the Old Testament didn t believe: The enemy does in fact enter the gates of Jerusalem to destroy the splendor of God.
Satan is an accuser of the brethren. He will turn family member against family member. Every foul, tormenting spirit of harlotry, bitterness, anger, and idolatry (which includes some religious traditions) is having far too great an effect in the lives of professing Christians.
Thelma has discovered the reality of this battle, but she s also found the way to victory. Through all the trials and testing of our faith, we can grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and truly become more than conquerors in Christ. As Scripture proclaims, Greater is He that is in us than He that is in the world! (1 John 4:4). Through His power-and only through His power-we can overcome the enemy. We need the wisdom of God, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the encouragement of our fellow believers. Thelma inspires us all to find the help and hope that come only through the sufficiency of our Lord Jesus. She is a friend of Betty and my ministry, LIFE Outreach, and she is a blessing to the body of Christ.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you ma
