Acknowledgments
I am deeply grateful to all of the remarkable mothers who made their contributions to this book. They were candid, real, and highly desirous of sharing their experiences of motherhood with other mothers. They offered their thoughts and understanding from the heart of a mother to the heart of other mothers.
From a remarkable group of mothers all over the United States and Canada, I want to thank Kathy Alderson, Karen Anders, Nancy Beasley, Celia Boeher, Cathy Brentzel, Beth Campbell, Kelly Charlier, Sally Conkle, Michelle Corrao, Susan Day, Debbie Daily, Donnae Dole, Carolyn Dorsey, Nancy Dresch, Linda Forler, Lynn Hartzell, Karen Lang, Theresa Leibold, Susan Leichty, Jennifer Lipinski, Laura Lucas, Julie Osborne, Julie Pelton, Claudia Pierson, Laurie Quist, Michele Reel, Patti Riemersma, Libby Sandstrom, Mary Schwendener-Holt, Sarah Tillbury, Rosemary Turner, Ann VanMeter, Laura Walker, Jill Zaniker, and the other mothers who wanted their names changed or withheld for personal reasons. You are all role models of mothering to me.
Another incredible community centers in the graduates of Christian Leaders, Authors, and Speaker Services (CLASS). These professional writers and speakers generously shared their talents and insights, expecting nothing in return but my deep devotion and a free book. Thank you! They are Jennie Bishop, DenaRae Carlock, Sherry Cummings, Cheryl Jackubowski, Linda Kelley, Sally Philbrick, Ginger Plowman, Lori Scott, Diana Taylor, Diana Urban, Dawn Whitmore, Lori Wildenberg, Rhonda Wilson, and Jeanne Zornes. To find out more about CLASS, please go to www.CLASServices.com .
Two other authors who made wonderful contributions were Lynn Shaw, who let me use her signature story about the washing machine and the ABCs, and Celeste Lilly-Rossman, who continually inspires me with her poetic prose and obvious connection to our Creator.
Marcia Cox, creator of Expressions, was a loving guide and tireless cheerleader over coffee on a regular basis. Her deep desire for children to be honored, blessed, and nurtured to their fullest has been a guidepost and an inspiration for this writing and the way I raise my own children.
Laurie Beth Jones has made invaluable contributions to my life and work by teaching me what it means to let God love me and work through me.
Terry Glaspey and Barbara Gordon of Harvest House Publishers were tremendously instrumental in the development of this book. Their keen eye for theme and structure, coupled with their deep passion for our readers, were inspirations to me as we made this into a book we hope will touch hearts and change lives for the glory of God.
My remarkable husband, David, is a constant source of steadiness, unconditional love, and unfailing belief in me and what I ve been called to do. I know more about love through his example than I ve ever known before.

Who s in Charge Here?
When my son was four years old, he watched Disney s Toy Story. Grant was particularly taken by Buzz Lightyear, the intergalactic superhero whose signature phrase was To Infinity and Beyond!
One morning while both my children were young enough to be at home with me a large part of the day, I knew someone was going to go to time out in short order. As the consummate introvert, I was in need of a very large dose of quiet, and there was no quiet to be found. What I did have plenty of were toys on the floor, pudding cups littering the dining room table, spats to settle, and a television that was not playing what I wanted to be watching. I sat in the living room contemplating who should be sent to their rooms first, the kids or me.
Grant had been watching Buzz and wanted to imitate him, ready to save the galaxy. Running through the room with a makeshift cape tied to his shoulders, he shouted his own version of Buzz Lightyear s famous battle cry: To Insanity and Beyond!
I had no idea which to do first, howl with laughter or burst into tears. I was already living in the insanity, so I wondered what could be in the beyond! Maybe I wanted to go there; maybe I didn t. But I knew that I needed to be somewhere other than where I was. I realized at that point something I had suspected all along. The inmates were running the asylum. I was not in charge of myself, my family, or my life.
I soon discovered I wasn t the only mom who felt this way. As I started to venture out and tell other mothers what I was experiencing, I realized many of us felt overscheduled and undervalued, overtired and under supported. We felt a sense of not knowing who we are anymore. In our everyday rush to meet everyone s needs, honor everyone s schedules, live up to everyone s expectations, and keep everyone happy, we feel out of touch, out of breath, out of patience, and certainly out of control.
And the pressures we moms feel extend beyond our internal expectations. There are powerful and compelling forces in society that try to dictate to us what we should choose and who we and our families should be. We can clearly identify cultural norms and expectations that keep us off balance if we take the time to think about what s happening in our lives.
And that s the issue, isn t it-having and taking the time to think through what s happening in our lives. The central message of this book is very clear, and I m going to say it right out front: Unless you take control of your heart, mind, and will using your God-given ability to discern and make choices, you will continue to feel like you re sinking, floundering, out of control, and going way too fast accomplishing way too little. Unless you understand and embrace your responsibility to be a wise woman walking with God, you will continually feel like everyone and everything else is in charge. This is especially important in the highly demanding and all-consuming role of mother. The very first great choice you make as a smart mom is to be in charge. This choice is so major, in fact, that it s not even counted in the 12 for the title of this book! It is the choice, and all the others flow from it.
What Being in Charge Is Not
The very first thing God ever told human beings was Take charge. A contemporary version of the Genesis creation account puts it like this:
God spoke: Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature so they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, and, yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of the Earth. God created human beings; he created them godlike, reflecting God s nature. He created them male and female. God blessed them: Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge! Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that moves on the face of the Earth. God looked over everything he had made; it was so good, so very good! (Genesis 1:26-28, 31 MSG ).
Other Bible versions use the word dominion instead of take charge. To take charge means to have authority, rule, command, control, supremacy, and jurisdiction. Wow!
