Acknowledgments
Without a doubt, the first person I must thank is my literary agent, Bill Jensen, who upon reading the subtitle I had written for another book, It s Not What You Eat, It s What Eats You , thought it would make a wonderful book title as well as a desperately needed, fresh look at the subject of weight loss. I followed his advice, as did the publisher s committee at Harvest House, and voil , this book was born.
My heart is full of admiration and gratitude for my editor, Paul Gossard, at Harvest House Publishers. Paul, this is our third book together (with more on the way). Your encouragement, attention to detail, and your eloquent mastery of the English language, along with your constant attention to the reader, have polished my writing, once again, to a high gloss! I am so thankful Harvest House paired us together.
I am always mindful of the risk that the publisher s committee took on this new author back in 2006. To Terry Glaspey, LaRae Weikert, Bob Hawkins Jr., John Constance, and Barb Sherrill: I am honored to partner with you each in book publishing. I have found a comfortable home with a warm family. Thank you for your continued enthusiasm in my book writing.
Special thanks to Scott Forsmith, CSW, who has read this manuscript in its entirety and has added to its effectiveness with his wisdom of patient care in the field of psychology.
I would be remiss not to thank those of you who have shared your personal journeys within the pages of this book. Your candid reflections are a true encouragement. May your stories resonate with the hearts of many who struggle, as you did, with food addiction.
Also, much love and gratitude goes out to my RYT Prayer Team. Ladies, you faithfully undergird all I do. With your support, God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.
Lastly, I must give credit for this book s completeness to my husband, Peter Morrone, who for the third time now has read and critiqued each chapter I have written three times over! Your input has blessed me and my readers alike (and probably made my editor s job a bit easier!). I love you, always .

Foreword
by Ron Eaker, MD
T he world needs another diet book about as much as it needs another flu pandemic, so it s a good thing Lisa Morrone didn t write one! Overcoming Overeating is a lifeline thrown to the millions of people who struggle with their weight. As a practicing physician for over 20 years, I have seen firsthand the devastation of being overfat. Men and women dramatically reduce both the quantity and quality of their years as they are forced to deal with the side effects of overweight and obesity: hypertension, diabetes, stroke, cancer, depression, and more.
Overcoming Overeating acknowledges the medical and mental destruction that comes from weight that s out of control, but it provides hope that springs from Lisa s grasp of the nature of obesity-a disorder involving mind, body, and spirit. With her personal and professional experience saturating the pages, she succinctly outlines a plan to help you jump off the not-so-merry-go-round, as she calls it.
Weight control is 75 percent above the neck. It is a brain game, and to win the game you have to understand both how and why you play. Dr. John Sklare, a friend and a noted weight-loss author, states, To change your weight, you have to change your mind! Lisa attacks this problem at its core, laying out a practical, sustainable, and results-oriented approach that will guide you to permanent mind change. Most important, she incorporates the wisdom and guidance of Scripture, pointing you to grace and forgiveness two concepts you won t find in many weight-loss books.
One of the key principles of Lisa s program is that knowledge by itself is not power-rather, it s the application of knowledge that yields sustained success. As part of this process she introduces you to the stories and successes of many real-life people. Their journeys will inspire and motivate you because they too have struggled with their weight.
As a physician, author, and dad, would I recommend this book to patients and family members? I would not only recommend it-for some of you I feel it may be your best hope for dealing with the mental and emotional side of overeating. Viktor Frankl said, If you know the why, the how will follow. Overcoming Overeating provides both the why and the how toward becoming the new, healthy you.
