Overcoming Back and Neck Pain -
A great resource to get you back to living well
This book takes a very practical approach to the key things patients really need to know. So I recommend it to all sufferers from spine problems. It s also a great adjunct for sharing information in a clinical setting. I appreciate Lisa s treatment of every person as someone who has not only a body and mind, but a spirit as well.
- Kent Keyser, MS, PT, OCS, COMT, ATC, FFCFMT, FAAOMPT ,
practicing and teaching physical therapist
Overcoming Back and Neck Pain is unique-it enables the nonmedical person to understand and manage their pain, but it is comprehensive enough to be an excellent resource and reference guide for physicians who take care of these problems. Well done.
- Warwick Green, MD , orthopedic surgeon
I suffered with back pain for several years. I had tried many other treatments, but none were lasting or effective. Through the therapy and teaching of Lisa Morrone, I have been pain-free for over six years I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is suffering with back or neck pain.
- Dan Compitiello , former back-pain sufferer
A treasure chest of information, easily understood, and presented with clarity, wit, and optimism a truly enjoyable journey from head to toe. A definite re-read!

To my husband, Peter, who first encouraged me to get what I know down in writing so many could be healed. He then spent countless hours critiquing my text, acting first as my photographer and finally as my photo-processing expert .
I love you .

To my professional colleagues and teaching partners, Howard Makofsky, PT, DHSc, OCS, and Karen Correia, PhD, PT, who have shared their knowledge and skills with me, spurring me on to achieve greater results with my patients .

To my prayer warriors, too numerous to mention by name, who have undergirded me and this book with their prayers from the beginning . Their personal support of me during the long process from concept to publication was invaluable .

To my agent, Bill Jensen, who saw a diamond in the rough and spent time cutting and polishing my writing style until it shone .

To the team at Harvest House, for investing in this project and for believing in the importance of Restoring Your Temple .

Finally, there is another author I would like to thank: Jesus Christ, the Author and Perfecter of my faith. In Him I trust unswervingly .

Why This Book Will Help You
Foreword by John Labiak, MD, Specialist in Spinal Surgery
B ack and neck problems are everywhere today. Not only do they result in enormous amounts of physical suffering, but their effect on people s relationships is equally bad. (If you are such a sufferer, you already know this.) This is not even to mention the money spent on health care, as well as the time and productivity that are lost. All these negative factors are among the most severe caused by any physical affliction whatsoever.
Adding to the problem, most people have a sketchy understanding of what can go wrong with their spine and what can be done about it. When they try to get good information, they find that many of the current medical resources are confusing and inaccurate.
Lisa Morrone s Overcoming Neck and Back Pain stands out from other self-help books in this category. It is, first and foremost, accurate. Additionally, it describes the various spinal conditions in easily understood terms. Thus, if you suffer from back or neck problems, you will understand why Lisa is recommending a certain treatment and what the result should be. The treatments Lisa recommends are practical, well described, well illustrated-and thus likely to be effective.
As an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in spinal conditions, I am grateful to Lisa Morrone for providing me such an invaluable resource to offer my patients.

Chapter 1
Enough Is Enough!
T he first time your neck or back hurt, it may have been nothing more than a minor inconvenience. Maybe you had to lay off doing the laundry for a few days or take it easy at work. Then your pain left just like it came for no reason, it seemed.
Now it has returned. It has become an all-too-frequent, unwanted guest in your life. Maybe it shows up every day like clockwork. It has found a cozy corner in your body and just won t move out. You ve had to make plans around it, change your daily activities maybe even take time off from work.
Others of you are in pain as a result of a traumatic fall or accident. Even though you ve taken your prescribed medications, been under the care of a medical professional or two, and had much time pass since your injury occurred, you can t get rid of the pain. You are tired of not being able to get through a day without its nagging at you. Tired of not being able to lift your children, do yard work, move quickly, or even hold yourself upright for an entire day. You re tired because you can t sleep, for goodness s
