FOREWORD

FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, many magazines and books describe the keys to a ‘better you’, with endless motivational or inspirational quotes. Yet people still fail to achieve their goal. This can often be attributed to their inability to value the reciprocal relationship between body and mind.
Your physical self, influences your mind and emotions. Many men want to lose weight, get ‘ripped’ and gain muscle. They believe that they would have better ‘body confidence’ if they could achieve this. Women are more complex in many ways, but those who exercise find they are better able to accept, appreciate, and respect themselves – achieving ‘body confidence’. Conversely, SUPER-AGERS set a behavioural expectation through regular exercise so that gaining ‘body confidence’ does not require much effort at all.
As a behavioural change interventionist (Health Coach) my role is to help people develop strategies for positive outcomes – improving their health, exercise, eating, and emotional wellbeing. Basically, I take the unhealthy ‘you’ from wanting to do something to actually getting it done.
If you go to gym classes, you will see that humans and wolves are really not so very different. In the gym there is a pack mentality, with the gym trainer as the leader. This is in stark contrast to a herd mentality, where individuals act collectively, but without any centralised direction. I am a leader and a ‘lone wolf’, with my individual training style that is now globally recognised and endorsed by the stringent Yoga Alliance Professionals. This is my Lone W•O•L•F (Wiser Older Leaner Fitter) story, that of a journey along a road less travelled. If you are reading this book, then you were meant to share this part of my life: becoming a Super-Ager.
For years I was caught between two places: who I was perceived to be and who I really am. The truth is that I never fitted neatly into any one category. My achievements serve to show that I rose above the inequality that exists, never accepting that my origins would predetermine my destiny. My experiences along the way, good and bad, forced me to understand and accept life from different people’s viewpoints in a myriad of places – though these views were not always in harmony with my own. The most important lesson I have learned is that if you want something to be different in your life then you must do something about it, because it won’t change itself.
Art and exercise are the foundation of everything that I do and have always been the main drivers of my life. I have determined the visions of a company’s fortunes as a Creative Director, and helped people to transform their minds and bodies as a Health Coach. Art is the ultimate expression of human endeavour – mindful movement, form, shape, imagination, composition, and emotional expression. A body in balance inspires ‘confidence’, that intangible thing that makes the incredible difference between feeling weak and being powerful.
My training methodology is varied, always changing and adapting, challenging the mind as much as the body. It has evolved as a consequence of my overcoming injuries to every major joint in my body through contact sports and motorcycle accidents. Initially, I had to exercise to stay mobile; now the act of exercising is an integral part of who I am and what I do. My journey has taken many twists and turns, leading me to an unshakeable conviction that my body contributes far more than just physical attributes – it plays a major role in my emotions, learning and relationships, and has taught me the value of using exercise and mindfulness to combat age-related changes.
Ageing is a natural process and is inevitable, but how we age is different for everyone. Lack of fitness in middle age increases your risk of dying so much that it is second only to smoking as a cause of early death. Poor levels of fitness and health awareness contribute to obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and depression.
I am a staunch advocate of the martial arts, boxing, and yoga disciplines because of their united approach to mindfulness and movement. All three emphasise self-control through breath awareness, rather than pure physical force. This is in stark contrast to many popular fitness activities that have an aggressive approach, often leading to muscle strain, joint pain, and ligament tears. Such injuries can, in turn, cause emotional distress, depression, and anxiety; all of which are primary triggers for weight gain and ageing – the very things we are battling against when we exercise! Breath awareness is a fundamental component of my unique SUPER-AGER fitness programme. Mental performance and agility can be considerably improved by increasing oxygen intake. It is said that 9 out of 10 people breathe incorrectly from their chest (shallow breathing or chest breathing) instead of from their abdominal area, causing them to take in less oxygen, thus greatly affecting the quality of their performance and confidence.
During my visits to the Amazon basin in South America, I was privileged to be able to spend time with the indigenous people. They have to move to survive: hunting, farming, fishing and playing rather than consciously exercising. They don’t eat processed foods and are largely free from common westernised diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. The contrast with my current home, London, is stark. Here I am accustomed to all the modern conveniences of first world living: fast food, modern technology, travel facilities, hospitals and health clubs. The irony is that when I look around, I also see the highest incidences of health problems in the history of mankind.
As a guest speaker, I don’t tell people what they need to do, or what they should do. I give them examples of my own personal experiences, ones that others have benefited from, and that they might consider, and relate to.
It’s at my SUPER-AGER fitness retreats where the real magic begins to happen; helping you to change your body and give you the mindset for a successful life-fitness outcome.
You can only know something when you have practised every part over and over again. My retreat is the perfect place to do this; enhancing your body awareness, understanding, experiences, and your physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Each day you physically build upon the previous day so that you are giving yourself time to meet your mental, weight and fitness goals; to build focus, strength, endurance, and flexibility.
Having an openness to new experiences will give you a better chance of a successful change, I firmly believe that being fit and healthy is a social responsibility for all of us. You cannot download a new body (yet!), so make the most of the one you’ve got. By starting to read this book you have taken the first step towards that goal – making the very most of your body. Read on to find out more about how to eat well, how to exercise better, and the benefits of a holistic approach to fitness. It will change your life…

WHO IS WAYNE LÈAL?
The Lone Wolf: where he came from, where he’s been and where he’s going
GROWING UP, becoming the person you want to be for the rest of your life, is a long and complicated process. You can make alterations along the way: change how you look, change your opinions, educate yourself… but a large part of your personality is shaped in early childhood without you even knowing it. The rest is basically sculpting! Some aspects are down to chance and others require willpower and confidence: adding information, chipping off undesirable bits, toning the body and mind a little more with each significant life experience.
Wayne’s experiences took him from h umble beginnings to where he is now – a roundabout route to his present position as Health Coach, Motivational Speaker and creator of his unique training programme: Super-Ager.
It is said that ‘Life is 10% what happens and 90% your response to it’. In a nutshell, Wayne has been through near-death ex
