It has recently found its way to the West where it has gained popularity as people have come to realize its power.Wind and Water: Your Personal Feng Shui Journey presents Feng Shui as simple suggestions that can be done on a daily basis. Index
Foreword by Professor Thomas Lin Yun
With regard to Feng Shui, the science of placement, the knowledge I have acquired is limited and the contribution I have made minimal. In retrospect, I have come to realize that a long time has elapsed between the period when I started at the age of sixteen or seventeen up to the present age of sixty-seven. During this period of time, I began by learning with gratitude from two well-respected masters, Cheng Kui-Ying in Roho province and Hui Chie-Fu in Shangtong province. Through practical application and empirical research, I am finally lecturing and teaching classes in Europe, America, Asia, Australia and other countries. This path has been over fifty years.
A Chinese proverb goes “teaching is learning.” In my fifty years of learning, lecturing and teaching, I indeed have gained more profound knowledge from my students, disciples, audience, other gurus, specialists and scholars.
I, therefore, incorporate the essence of traditional Feng Shui of various schools, the Fourth Stage of Black Sect Tantric Buddhism and the complicated cultures of India, Tibet and mainland China. By integrating modern scientific knowledge, psychology, physiology, urban planning, etc., as well as some spiritual knowledge, I have initiated and established Feng Shui of Black Sect Tantric Buddhism.
This pioneering and unique school has given inspiration to the four valuable books written by Sarah Rossbach, who has followed my teaching and promoted and enunciated my theory for over twenty years. It has then been further spread by intelligent, loving and well-cultivated disciples such as Katherine Metz. The result is that not only are there many people in America and Europe showing great interest in the teachings of the school, but also many people providing classes, writing articles and publishing books. They have achieved success in various degrees, making more and greater contributions to society and humanity.
Among the works of special expertise, all with highest value in their own right, is added this most recent and most outstanding book enunciating the essence of Feng Shui entitled Wind and Water: Your Personal Feng Shui Journey by Carole J. Hyder.
In this book, the author begins by guiding us on how to use the book. We are guided from understanding the concept of Feng Shui, including the definition of the eight trigrams (the bagua) and visualization power, to analyzing the essential points of Feng Shui. Finally, the author discusses and analyzes the various practical ways to implement the precious and honorable Feng Shui knowledge into our daily working and living environments.
This book is full of unique points. It clearly informs and explains to its readers the principles of Feng Shui from the Black Sect Tantric Buddhism perspective, which originates from the Chinese tradition, but not limited to the traditional viewpoint. This school is based on modern science as well as my fifty years of practical Feng Shui experience.
The author’s writing technique, editing of the contents and the order are very special and unconventional. Even readers who have never studied Feng Shui before will find it easy to grasp and to understand, and thus will be eager to try it. Readers who have studied Feng Shui will acquire new understanding by inducing and deducing from a different angle. By reviewing this book, everyone who reads it can attain a new way of evaluating life in the context of Feng Shui.

Acknowledgments
The school of Feng Shui that I have studied and practiced since 1992 is Black Sect Tantric Buddhist Feng Shui. I am a disciple and student of Master Thomas Lin Yun, the man who is responsible for this form of Feng Shui. Professor Lin is a Buddhist teacher who lives in Berkeley, California, and teaches from the Yun Lin Temple. He has beautifully blended the traditional art of placement with the modern Western world without sacrificing any of the integrity of the ancient school. His evolutionary work with Feng Shui has made the concept adaptable into our homes and into our hearts. Professor Lin has enabled Feng Shui to become “user friendly” to a culture which, until a few years ago, had never heard the term. From his profound insights and those of Katherine Metz, a senior student of Professor Lin’s for many years, I am where I am today.
My gratitude also goes to Barbara Bobrowitz, my business partner in Balanced Environment.™ We have traveled the Feng Shui path together since 1992, speaking from our hearts about Feng Shui to anyone who would ask.
I wasn’t sure I had the makings of a book until my dear friend Vara Kamin read the beginning pages and declared it “real.” Thanks to my readers Patti Baldwin, Barbara Gutkin, Carol Cannon, and Janet Sawyer. A special thanks to Judy Cigan Hall for her in-depth editing, comments, and cheerleading. And thank you to Robert and Diane Brown who “saw” the book before I did with their astrological eyes and, despite us being total strangers, reassured my hesitation around starting this endeavor.
To my sweet and constant feline companion, Muffin, whose wisdom and compassion inspired me many days when I didn’t feel like writing. I’m sorry she didn’t live to see the finished product.
Words cannot express enough gratitude to my designer, Dorie McClelland. A steady and persistent beacon, she kept me on track. Her cover design, her editing, her insights, and her organization enabled Wind and Water: Your Personal Feng Shui Journey to happen in a painless and exhilarating fashion. She brought the integrity and gentleness to this book for which I was searching. I extend heartfelt blessings and continued success to all of her endeavors.
Finally, to my husband, Tom, who not only read several versions of the manuscript with a loving and critical eye, but also allowed it to flow over into our lives. I’m grateful for his patience and his unwavering support to me around this project. He never once doubted my capabilities, and he mirrored that message to me more times than he’ll ever realize. May Feng Shui continue to permeate our life together.
New introduction, 2008
It’s been ten years since I initially wrote this book Wind and Water. The information was actually compiled for the students who were in my first training class. I thought it could be a helpful study guide. Thankfully someone with a bigger vision than I pointed out to me the viability of turning these thoughts and suggestions into a book.
In an industry as young as Feng Shui is in the U.S., I have seen enormous changes in the receptivity factor. Back in 1992 when I began stepping out as a Feng Shui consultant, hardly anyone had heard of it. I’d ask for a show of hands at speaking venues: How many know what Feng Shui is? A couple hands would go up. Today everyone’s heard of the art of placement and most often have had some personal experience with it. The audience has gotten quite educated and sophisticated, and raised their expectations with regard to the credentials of Feng Shui consultants.
Five years ago, I took those audience expectations to heart as well as a distant calling of my own and began the process of enrolling in the University of Minnesota graduate program in their East Asian field of study. I wasn’t looking to enhance my Feng Shui knowledge, but was looking to enhance my Feng Shui understanding from a cultural and historical perspective. I got on the first of many buses taking me to the campus in September 2003. It took me three-and-a-half years, mostly because, as part of the requirements of the program, I had to have three years of Mandarin Chinese. It was hard and exhilarating, and it surpassed my expectations. Some of the folklore stories I had heard during my Feng Shui studies came back around in the Chinese opera we were studying, or in a Tang Dynasty poem. Seeing how emperors subscribed to the cycle of the 5 Agents brought them alive for me. Listening to Professor Lin Yun lecture in Chinese and being able to grasp some of his phrases before they were translated—well, priceless. I completed my master’s a year ago and still miss it.
In 1998, due to demand, I began The Wind and Water School of Feng Shui. It wasn’t called that then, but it evolved over the years. It’s a two-part program which spans over eighteen months; its primary focus is Black Sect. I appreciate the serious commitment students make to attend the classes and I never stop being awed at their own journeys as they learn and integrate.
