Description

Menopause can impact a woman’s life in a variety of ways—the experiences of which are as varied and unique as each woman who is experiencing them. Nurse Barb wants every woman to know that this is no longer their grand mothers’ generation—there’s no need to just accept whatever comes their way. Vitality, zest, and yes, a sexy outlook on life are within every woman’s reach.

The Hot Guide to a Cool Sexy Menopause is an extension of what Nurse Barb offers her own patients—which is relatable information, easy-to-understand explanations, and a varied menu of options. The author doesn’t believe in telling women what to do when the hormonal roller coaster of menopause presents a challenge. Instead, she believes in helping women find their own best path to total health.

Menopause isn’t the end, nor is it something to be endured like a root canal. Menopause is a new beginning, and it can be one of the most rewarding times in a woman’s life. There’s a great deal to look forward to during this part of the journey and beyond. Nurse Barb provides a wealth of advice to guide you along your way.

Each chapter of the book covers a different aspect of the menopause transition. Rounding out the practical information are true-life stories about women who have experienced the physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges and how they navigated this journey, growing stronger, more empowered, and healthier. A cool and sexy menopause is just a read away!

T his book is a result of years of listening to friends and patients describe how their lives were turned upside down by the hormonal roller coaster of menopause and how much they wanted their lives back. Then, when I began feeling the fire of hot flashes and couldn’t sleep more than a few hours without throwing off the covers and leaping out of bed to douse myself with cold water, I really understood how completely meno pause can alter a woman’s life. I wasn’t ready to throw in the towel, and I knew that millions of women weren’t either.
I’m especially grateful to all of the women who graciously shared their experiences with me and provided the stories in each chapter. Their honesty and desire to find options to relieve their symptoms provided the genesis of this book. I’m deeply grateful to my colleagues at Women Physicians Medical Group in Mountain View, California, for inspiring and modeling how to partner with patients. Dr. Katherine Sutherland, Dr. Christine Litwin-Sanguinetti, Dr. Janet Pulskamp, and Dr. Rita Leard, I learned so much from each of you about how to be a better clinician and listener. I’m also deeply grateful to the friends who generously agreed to review multiple drafts of this manuscript, cover options, make spot-on suggestions, and provide constant support and encouragement along the way: Marilyn Arnst, Carol Weiss, Mary Dean, Therese McKenna, Kathy Augason, Karen Avery, Beth Dawes, Leslie Pinkelman, Lauren Zucchi, Susan Alfano, Margaret Braccio, Cathy Konicki, Judi Rich, Alison Takata, Sidney Johnson, Claudia Winkelman, Teri Zingale, my friends from the 100 Women Foundation and the friends who meet for coffee, hikes, and Homestead band events.
I am especially grateful to my nurse practitioner colleagues: Mimi Secor, Diane Todd-Pace, Lisa Chism, Deb Kiley, Nancy Dirubbo, Karen Ketner, Jenny Shipp, and Mary Foehringer. I’d also like to thank my colleagues at the North American Menopause Society for providing evidence-based resources for women at midlife.
I’m deeply indebted to Jan Davis, who designed the cover of this book and who has been the designer for my Personal Guides to Health. I’d also like to thank my fantastic team at Media 2×3, Adora English, and Jess Ponce, who believed in the importance of empowering women with information and encouraged me to write this book.
This book benefited from the insight and coaching of Dr. Joyce Starr and from my energetic and engaging agent, Karen Gantz Zahler. I’d also like to thank Norman Goldfind, an extraordinary publisher who loved the title and his outstanding team at Basic Health Publishing, especially Carol Killman Rosenberg, who edited the manuscript.
I am also grateful to my parents and especially to my son, Giancarlo. His sense of humor and patience with a mom who talks about hot flashes and menopause makes me so proud of the wonderful man he’s becoming.
And most of all, I am lucky to have a cool sexy menopause because of my best friend and the love of my life: my husband, John. His patience, support, wisdom, and encouragement mean everything to me. I am deeply grateful.
Introduction
M enopause can impact a woman’s life in a variety of ways. The range of experiences is as varied and unique as each woman’s own life. For some women, menopause feels like a mild breeze, bringing few concerns and only minor physical changes. For other women, it feels like they are being challenged by a Category-5 hurricane that wreaks havoc in every aspect of their lives. For the rest, the experience of menopause falls somewhere in the middle.
Whatever the case may be, my patients and friends who are experiencing menopausal symptoms aren’t ready to just accept whatever “weather” comes their way. We aren’t our grandmothers’ generation! We want to maintain our vitality and zest—and yes, our sexy outlook—during this stage of our lives.
The Hot Guide to a Cool Sexy Menopause is an extension of what I offer my patients, which is to provide relatable information, explanations, and a menu of options to consider. I don’t believe in telling women what to do when they are challenged by the hormonal roller-coaster ride that comes with menopause. Instead, I believe that each woman needs to find her own best path and try various solutions, as she makes the wisest and healthiest choices in her own life.
No matter what your personal experience has been with menopause so far, it is likely you have some bothersome symptoms and many questions. This book offers vital information, answers, practical tips, and a few secrets that have helped thousands of women stride confidently through this transition with more health, vitality, and even more sexiness than ever before.
Menopause isn’t the end, nor is it something to be endured like a root canal. Menopause is a new beginning and can be one of the most rewarding times in your life. There’s a great deal to look forward to during this part of your journey and beyond. For many women, menopause may be the first time in their lives that they fully give themselves permission to do what they want, rather than what is expected of them. Many women find newfound freedom to explore new opportunities or to devote more time to the activities that nurture and sustain them. As their bodies change, many women find themselves restless and ready to reexamine their lives and redirect their path toward new destinations.
By the time you’ve reached this stage of your life, there’s a good chance you feel more alive and more energized than ever before. You’re smarter, wiser, and more in touch with yourself than you were ten or twenty years ago, and yet you may still feel sideswiped by the physical changes your body is undergoing and how you’re feeling. Some or much of what you’re experiencing might even be overwhelming or confusing. My job is to help you make sense of what you’re facing and serve up some practical advice, experience, humor, and research-based solutions that have helped millions of menopausal women feel their best. Each chapter covers a different aspect of the menopause transition. For each topic, I’ll also share real women’s experiences with the physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges of menopause and describe how they navigated this journey, growing stronger, more empowered, and healthier. The “Nitty-Gritty” sections cover all the basics you need to know, and each chapter ends with my hot tips and secrets that will give you the edge over each menopausal challenge.
After caring for women for over twenty-five years, I know that every woman is different and wants advice tailored to her own unique life and situation, with options to choose from that will be the best for her. I know the same is true for you. Enjoy your journey.

Letting Go and Reclaiming Your Life
I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that menopause usually sneaks up on us at midlife when our plates are already overflowing with the responsibilities of work, family, aging parents, and to-do lists that seem to get longer every day. The last thing we need is the unpredictability of menopause with sleep deprivation, hot flashes, night sweats, or other physical and emotional challenges. The good news is that menopause arrives at midlife at a time when most women have the skills they need to deal with whatever comes their
