Introduction

W hen I was a child I drove my parents crazy, asking “why?” about everything. I know. Many children do this. But I took questioning to an extreme. No matter what they replied, I remember feeling another question bubbling up inside me that just wouldn’t go away. “But why is that?” I would ask in response to their original answer. I never grew out of this.
My curiosity turned into an asset when I became a nutritionist more than twenty-five years ago. While some of my colleagues trusted the information they heard or read from supplement companies and other vested interest groups, I questioned everything. This led me to read scientific studies. When there were few studies on certain therapies, I sought out doctors with keen observational skills and asked them about the newer therapies they were using in their treatments. I wanted to know what these doctors were finding in their clinics. When I became a nutritional consultant, I called my practice “The Nutrition Detective” because it echoed my questioning style.
My first book, published in 1985, reflected this approach to women’s health. It, too, was called The Nutrition Detective . The same month it came out, a study on premenstrual syndrome, for which I was the primary author, was published in the Journal of Applied Nutrition . This study found some nutritional solutions for both the physical and emotional symptoms of PMS that have become familiar to many doctors of integrative medicine.
It was no accident that I authored a scientific study and a popular book on nutrition at the same time. My interest has always been to combine science with digging around for more information. Whether in my books, my research, or my nutritional counseling practice, I have always looked for clues that lead to the underlying causes for women’s health problems.
Now I’ve expanded my focus to include a person’s lifestyle (exercise, stress reduction, etc.), as well as their use of pharmaceutical drugs and traditional diagnostic tools. I’ve become the Health Detective to the many thousands of women who read Women’s Health Letter , my monthly national newsletter. This expansion has given me a wider view of the health problems that face all of us as we grow older. It has also helped me look at both sides of an issue.
There’s a tug-of-war going on and your health is at risk. Business interests are pulling on one end, and science is tugging at the other. I’d be amazed if you’re not confused and frustrated. To tell you the truth, I’ve found that most doctors are as well. It takes time to sift through current information and separate the hype from the real deal. Who has the time to read through technical scientific studies? Who calls up researchers and doctors to better understand the validity of their conclusions? Well, I do. In fact, this is precisely what I’ve been doing for the past twenty-five years as a nutritionist and health writer.
During this time, I discovered that there are good scientific studies that draw sound conclusions about drugs or nutrients. And then there are poorly designed studies that are meaningless if you read them carefully. These studies are often designed to help sell a drug or a supplement. But the science behind them is so faulty that the study is meaningless except as a sales tool.
If only you had the time and the expertise to separate the wheat from the chaff, you’d know that there are truly miraculous substances and diagnostic tools out there that could help improve your health dramatically. I’ve uncovered a number of these health secrets over nearly a dozen years of writing for Women’s Health Letter . And I decided to put the most relevant ones I’ve come across in one place to make it easy for you to use. You may have heard of a few of them already. But I’ll guarantee there are many you’ve never heard of.
Did you know that a common garden herb can often stop the hot flashes that accompany menopause? You may not need to take hormones at all if this is your primary menopausal complaint.
Are you aware that an overlooked mineral deficiency could be responsible for both an underactive thyroid and breast cancer? Not only is there a way to test for this deficiency, it isn’t expensive and you don’t need a doctor’s prescription to get it.
What can you do when you can’t get a yearly flu shot or it doesn’t work? I found a supplement that has kept my patients and me free from colds, flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia for the past four years.
I could go on and on. But instead of listing more of the health secrets I found, put aside your confusion and let go of your frustrations. Turn to the Table of Contents and pick a chapter or two to read that could improve your health for the rest of your life. Or read the book straight through. I
