Foreword
Dr. Ryan Niemiec
One of the largest projects in the field of positive psychology was the creation of a universal classification of character strengths and virtues. This is known as the VIA Classification. It was accompanied by the VIA Survey, which is a user-friendly, scientific tool that measures these strengths of character. This was groundbreaking work that occurred shortly after the beginning of this millennium. Never before had there been a classification, based in science, that maps out a ‘language’ for understanding what is best in human beings – basic, positive psychological ingredients.
In one decade, this VIA work has found its way into the hands of millions of people reaching every country across the globe. Hundreds of scientists are now running research studies on character strengths. Thousands of coaches, counselors, business managers, and teachers are including the VIA Survey and practices designed to build character strengths in their work with clients, employees, and students. And, countless people in the general public are directly tapping into their signature character strengths to create their best life, reach their goals, develop greater happiness, and overcome life challenges.
This book, beautifully written by Christine L. Conroy, is another positive outgrowth of this work. Christine will not only take you on a journey through many of the elements of positive psychology but will pass along a number of practical tools. From appreciation letters to success journals to applying your strengths at work and at play, you will be able to concoct the exact recipe you need to cultivate happiness.
Most poignant are the stories. You will be brought to (inspired) tears by the story of Charlotte, be left in awe at the bravery of Pat, and learn nuggets of wisdom from Mum. Christine weaves these stories throughout the book like an expert seamstress. And, when I say you will ‘feel’ these positive emotions when reading this book, trust me. I mean it.
Not every sentence in this book should be viewed as a research-based finding. And it shouldn’t be. Instead, Christine weaves astute observations and personal/professional experiences along with science-based tidbits. In one story, Christine shares how the use of two of her signature strengths (curiosity and humor) helped her to sustain her happy marriage. There’s a lot to say about the importance of using your signature strengths (your highest qualities most core to who you are) at work, in school, and in your life in general, but applying them in marriage is a new area of research. Nevertheless, I fully agree with Christine. Learning to express who you are and what is best about you will help you embrace, connect, appreciate, and even cherish those you love the most. No doubt, science will eventually catch up with this wisdom and perhaps eventually find that a key factor in a flourishing marriage involves expressing your true self freely with your partner, and at the same time, savouring and appreciating who they are as well.
Character strengths are indeed a core part of this journey that Christine will take you on. You can spot them in every story and every page of this book. Test it yourself:
a) Choose any page (or story) at random;
b) Have the list of twenty-four VIA character strengths in hand (see page 118);
c) Read the page (or story);
d) Spot the character strengths Christine is speaking to, directly or indirectly.
This is not only because of Christine’s knowledge of the subject area and her talent for writing an engaging book, but also because our core character strengths are a natural fabric within our stories. They are at the essence of life. They are the steering wheel and the motor.
Through life experience, we can nourish and champion these best qualities within us. We can also stifle them. Christine shares how she needed to build up some aspects of her positivity and strength at times, and at other times, she full-out blasted her strengths and energy out there looking adversity in the eye, embracing beauty, climbing mountains of pain, and striving forward.
Sometimes people say that life is a collection of moments. We can also view life as a collection of stories. Perhaps one of our tasks in life is to understand and then embrace and express our stories? You have, at your fingertips, a collection of many of Christine’s stories. Through her honest and forthright sharing, we learn just how precious, powerful, and transformative ‘story’ can be. Because Christine’s sharing of herself and her family is so intimate and genuine, perhaps this will draw you to express your own story? We all have stories that matter.
In addition to being direct and honest about the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful in her life, Christine’s words flow from a place of love and hope. Warmth, genuineness, and optimism are present within the tragedies, the comedies, and everything in between. This is a recipe for inspiration. A recipe for meaningfulness. A recipe for how to stitch a silver lining.

We Can All Increase Our Happiness Levels
‘The UK and many other developed societies have experienced the paradox of getting richer, but not happier. For decades we have measured and analysed GDP (Gross Domestic Product) but have only recently recognized the merit in tracking our nation’s happiness and life satisfaction.
We need to change our thinking about where true happiness comes from. Christine L. Conroy in Stitch Your Own Silver Linings gives us the tools to do just that. In this book Christine demonstrates that by thinking again about what we value in society we can all increase our happiness levels.
Christine’s message that becoming ‘happy first’ equips us with the strength we need in order to cope with life’s inevitable setbacks, comes from someone with powerful perspective given the challenges in her own life’.

Introduction
Are you happy? Are you living the best life you could possibly live? Or, are you drifting through life hoping that tomorrow will be the day. Your time will come and that ‘something’ you are waiting for will happen and change your life completely. Do you think, ‘If I could only do (you fill in the blank), I would be happy?’ Or, ‘If I could only have (you fill in the blank), I would be happy?’ Perhaps you struggle along in a job you don’t like, waiting for retirement when, finally, some happiness might be found before the long sleep? Alternatively, you might be experiencing personal problems or even dealing with tragedy right now that is making you think you will never be happy again.
If you have ever had any of these thoughts, you are not alone. However, I am here to tell you that your way of thinking is completely the wrong way round. Instead of thinking, ‘If I could do this, I could have that and then I would be happy,’ you need to think, ‘If I could be happy, I could do this and then I could have that .’ You need to be happy first.
Happiness will bring you the success you are looking for. You may well have heard that said before. The question is, how do you ‘be happy first ’? I am going to show you how. Even if, at the moment, you think you will never be happy again, stick with me. I will show you that no matte
