Description

Despite incredible and previously undreamed-of advances in modern medicine, for many women the issue of infertility remains a heart-breaking reality. Using a combination of traditional and modern astrological techniques, the author has delved deeply into the charts of hundreds of infertile women, and in many cases has unravelled what might be at the root of the problem. Sometimes it's a matter of location or timing, or it could be psychological issues in the relationship that are causing the block; whatever the reason, the author works closely with the couple - and often the medical profession - to produce results that are frequently positive where there has been no hope before. Although this is an advanced textbook for astrologers, the human element of the case histories is nothing short of inspiring, and from that perspective can be enjoyed by readers with no knowledge of astrology.

About the Author
Nicola Smuts-Allsop is a consulting astrologer living in the United Kingdom. Nicola has recently graduated from Canterbury Christ Church University, with a Master s Degree in Myth, Cosmology and The Sacred.
Nicola has specialised in this field and has undergone fertility treatment herself. She is a mother of two adult children and can empathise and understand the pain and the desperation of trying to conceive. She lectures internationally on her fertility work and her research and methods in this field are pioneering and unique. Her success in diagnosing fertility issues in charts and finding potentially fertile times to try In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and other reproductive treatments has been published in The Sunday Times (London), The London Times , and The Daily Mail. Her work has also been featured on national television ( Free Spirit, Top Billing ) in South Africa.

This book has had many midwives, but its conception (apologies) must be credited to Dr. Bernadette Brady, who, on a visit to South Africa to speak at a conference I was hosting, rearranged my brain and my study and instructed me on how to begin writing it. I was introduced to the marvellous Ysha de Donna who so generously allowed me to express myself without judgment. A first draft appeared on the horizon, and then I took time off to study a master s degree at Canterbury.
The hugely talented Dr. Jenn Zahrt took over as a more critical, academic editor and a more serious draft formed. The last trimester saw the final touches by Margaret Cahill, my publisher, who tweaked and packaged my work into what you have in your hand. The artist who painted the picture featured on the cover, Tracy Payne, is a childhood friend. I discovered the painting while on holiday in South Africa, and to my delight, she had painted the word NOW over the ancient figures of Shiva and Parvati, mirroring my integration of medieval traditional astrology and modern medical treatment.
During the final preparation of the book I had the good fortune to work with Wade Caves on the chart wheel design; I really appreciated both the clean, clear lines of his charts, and his support for the book and my astrology. When I was first learning astrology, medieval or traditional techniques - indeed the very texts themselves - were extremely hard to come by, and the internet was but a foetus .(think dial-up modems!) So the younger set (of which Wade is one) have been fortunate to have had access to newly published works from older sources, and consequently there is a shift towards more rigorous astrology. There is also a shift towards whole sky astrology, using the fixed stars, and I have drawn heavily on the work of Bernadette Brady to give my predictions a broader context and a deeper interpretation.
I would like to acknowledge the life work of Robert Hand (also Robert Schmidt and Robert Zoller) and the Project Hindsight translations, without which my astrological technique would be very much poorer.
It would be remiss of me not to mention my very dear friend and colleague Rod Suskin, who not only taught me astrology, but who has patiently heard every idea or thought that contributed to this book. I was an unruly student, and my thoughts are not exactly linear, so his continued friendship is terribly precious to me.
Lastly... I really need to thank Himself, who has put up with this astrology business and who never complains about the time I spend away from the family, either holed up in my study or travelling to another conference.

Foreword
Rod Suskin
Most astrologers are familiar with the connections between astrology and mythology - both those myths that predate the astrology we know and those that we looked to later to help explain what we saw in the stars. As much as mythology helps us understand ourselves, it is rare to find a close marriage between astrological technique and mythological narrative that produces a direct, practical application of narrative healing. That can be found in this book.
Nicola s astrology is revolutionary for many reasons. One is quite simply that she takes deeply classical methods such as the Almuten of pregnancy and directs it, an unprecedented use of almutens yet revelatory in its results. Another is that she brings her astrology into the contemporary health paradigms of narrative medicine and shows that astrology fits into these new paradigms and ways of understanding ourselves just as it did in ancient times and throughout the ages, without having to alter the astrology to fit the modern paradigm.
This is a significant point. Nicola does not require us to alter or abandon the astrology we know, which has been used throughout our history; nor does her innovation mean we have to accept a paradigm of astrology distant from those we already know.
She reminds us that fertility itself is not a subject new to astrology, but the results of using many of the largely symbolic traditional methods common today have been found wanting at best. Difficulty conceiving is a prevalent issue and one which causes much anxiety, and methods such as IVF, which are often resorted to, in themselves prolong anxiety through expense and discomfort.
Since there are so few alternative options, it is not surprising that many specialists in the field of fertility have been open to Nicola s work in an effort to minimise the challenges for these patients. This has enabled her to help people who might otherwise have never consulted an astrologer, as well as encourage professionals in other fields such as medicine to see the value of astrology, and indeed astrology itself in an altogether new light.
The same will happen to you when you apply the methods in this book. While Nicola does not fall into the thorny trap of attempting to prove her work using the limitations of empirical methods, her work with doctors and the many successful results people have had with her methods speak to a new paradigm in which to measure astrological results. Nicola suggests that astrology is a narrative healing method, and thus allows the reader to contemplate and experiment with the use of her clear methodology to help resolve other challenges our clients face.
I have witnessed Nicola s progress through the vast knowledge network of astrology since its very beginning, and it is inspiring - and sometimes mind-boggling - to see where her penetrating, enquiring intellect has taken her without ever steering her away from her solid roots in traditional and contemporary methods.
I know that what awaits you, the reader, is a journey that will challenge, stretch and grow your astrology too.

How to read this book
This is a thoroughly contemporary book of medieval astrology, which may well present you with new techniques and also some that may seem to contradict what you already know. I use major case studies that demonstrate by example how to read charts for fertility questions; each and every story is unique, and each time I interpret a chart the results are slightly different from the client before. And while the departure point for all the delineations is based in the medieval tradition of astrology, the modern techniques you are more familiar with can come to play a role as the delineation proceeds. Despite the variances of how my methods are employed between cases, a consistent theme runs throughout the narratives.
Also know that there is no definitive method of interpreting someone s fertile potential; signatures can only go so far. As you will find, the actual signatures vary slightly from case to case, and my interpretations reflect the specific nature of each chart and situation. You can read these case studies as if you were reading a story, and let the historical and technical information dispersed throughout sink in and take root. As you begin to work with clients you will hone a similar adaptability in your practice that I demonstrate in the following pages.
In addition, although I work globally, most of my research is based on charts from South Africa (and to a lesser extent, the United Kingdom), and as such it will have a cultural bias you may not be familiar with. However, the diversity of my client base has allowed me to glean an understanding of fertility that transcends racial and cultural boundaries, and so I am able to understand the core issues that affect women more broadly.
