About the Author
Alison is a mother of four boys and a teacher with over 20 years of experience. She has worked across the primary school age range, including in a speech and language base where the children were diagnosed with speech, language and communication difficulties. Many of the children she has worked with, through her teaching career, have been diagnosed with ADHD or ASD, encountered stress and anxiety, suffered from abuse and neglect or have had complex emotional problems.
Alongside teaching, she has engaged with children on an emotional level, helping them to build their self-esteem, gain trust in others and deal with anger and anxiety, and overcome many other emotional difficulties.
Alison is a Reiki Master, Rahanni teacher and is qualified in crystal healing. Her ‘Calmer Kids’ programme helps children discover inner calm, peace and relaxation. She works to help children boost their self-esteem and confidence, increase their concentration and encourages them to become more positive towards themselves and others.

Acknowledgements
To my husband and mum, I couldn’t have written this without your encouragement, support, guidance and love. I would also like to say thank you to my dad in spirit. He always had faith and belief in me, showing me great support in everything I did. He was a beautiful soul who never judged, was always there for his friends and loved his family unconditionally.
Also, I want to thank the team at Austin Macauley for all their patience and hard work in getting the book published.
Meditation and Relaxation Techniques
I am a mother of four boys. Each and every one of them has a special cuddly friend (a monkey, a doggy, a teddy and teddy pie) who goes to sleep with them, listens to their worries and fears, takes their first daunting steps with them to the park, a friend’s house, holidays, to nursery and other places. These wonderful, precious friends calm them down in times of stress or upset and are with them every step of the way. It doesn’t matter that they are worn, tatty, scruffy, dirty, mended with cotton thread or smell. In fact, that makes them even more special – don’t wash them! NEVER lose them – oh the tears, telephone calls, postage and desperation from the parents as much as the children because these funny, little, wonderful and precious friends are actually part of the family. I consider myself to be a mother of technically not four boys as I mentioned earlier, but eight!
So, what is the deal with these little friends? Exactly that they are the best friends a little person could have. They are constant, calm, understanding, comforting and of course return their love, unconditionally even if they are dropped, squashed, stepped on, played catch with, ‘Mummy, catch!’ or even left behind. I remember when my eldest dropped his monkey in Brighton, by the pier; I’m not sure how many times we walked up and down trying to find him. I was adamant that we were not going back home to Hertfordshire without him. Panic rose in my heart as my husband announced that we really should leave, and my mother-in-law desperately searched one last time. I called on the angels for their help and suddenly there he was, sitting on the railing, smiling, ‘Hello there’, at us. My husband, overjoyed at the sight of him, whisked him up and into the arms of my two-year-old. Phew! But, you see, a two-year-old hasn’t the same love as a nine-year-old when he left him on his school residential trip in Shropshire. The devastation in his heart was unbearable. Watching the tears and feeling his heartache as a parent was awful. I made round calls to every parent he shared the room with to look in their boys’ suitcases with no luck, phoned the centre–no joy and then I did what I did the last time, I called upon the angels. With a restless night, I called the centre again in the morning – Yes! He had been found. Sitting on his bed, waiting to be returned to his most favoured person in the world. We were all excited and relieved when he was delivered first class in the post.
My second boy left his massive doggy in our holiday house we had rented in Devon. Luckily, the house cleaner understood the bond between furry friend and owner; she also posted him back to him within days so they could be reunited. So, you can see the bond of love is fantastically special and always constant. Now, who wouldn’t ask for one of these characters in their lives? I seem to remember my pink dog, Teddy and Snoopy. I was greedy and had three very wonderful and magnificent friends to see me through my childhood.
Although I am choosing Monkey to base these meditations on, I know that they are equally valuable with all my children’s special friends and your children’s alike.
Whilst I know that ultimately our children will outgrow their furry friends, as I did, I know they will only do so in their own time. In the meantime, I have written meditations and relaxing techniques to be carried out between furry friends and child to help our children through times of stress, anxiety, sleep problems and difficult times until they feel ready to meditate on their own. The meditations and relaxing techniques will help children discover their inner calm, help them look within and find peace and who else would you want to share these delightful experiences with?
The relaxation techniques and meditations in this book will guide children and take them on a journey into their imagination. Whilst in this state, their bodies will naturally fall into a sense of calm and thus begin the healing process. They can be done at any time or anywhere. The hope is for children to be able to, eventually, be so familiar with the techniques that they can recite them for themselves and even begin to create their own.
In this book, I have focused on children between the ages of four to ten. These are only guidelines and can be used with children of any age with some adapting. The use of vocabulary is also worth noting; read the meditations through to yourself first and make sure your child will understand the concepts of exhale, visualise, imagine etc.

A Brief Note on Meditation
There are many different types of meditation techniques, some help to still the mind, others take you on a journey.
There are many different ways to relax and to meditate which is great as we are all different and what works well for one child will not work for another. Age also plays a part; younger children find it harder to concentrate for longer periods and older children can appreciate the more complex adventures. Some children find sitting still difficult; walking meditations, therefore, will appeal to them. One of my boys loves Harry Potter and to help him calm and relax, I tell him adventures that include him in a secret club where he is training to become a wizard. I use story massage to support the adventures and he is asleep in no time afterwards. He also gets excited each night for the next instalment.
When we are still or moving in quietness, it heightens your senses and you will begin to feel your body. Being still sends a message to our brain to ‘heal’ and concentrating on your breath helps you to remain focused. To breathe rhythmically helps to increase the oxygen to the brain through our cells and will give a surge of energy. When we are not breathing correctly, and most of us are not, we are supressing our emotions. Holding our breath and locking it away creates layer upon layer of built up emotions. When we hold our breath, it tells the brain to fight or flight. This sends a rush of adrenaline around our body and all this adrenaline builds up and hence we become stressed. Too much stress creates ‘sickness’ and our bodies start to shut down. We become
