#1

When I was 11, I learned that my grandfather had leukemia. I felt a deep sense of guilt because I knew he was going to die, and yet I had demanded to see him. I understood why I had been in such a panic to see him.

#2

I had a dream one week after my grandfather passed away. In the dream, I was an actress living in Australia. I felt beautiful, and suddenly felt a staggering concern for my family back home. I was dying, but I didn’t wake up. I began to drift away from my body and into a dark, peaceful place.

#3

I learned two truths through my gift: our souls endure and return to a place we call the Other Side, and the Other Side is very close.

#4

The distinction between borders and sides is an important one. Borders are what separate things, while sides are what connect them. The other side of the paper is right there, but it’s still separate from you.

#5

I was a strange little kid. I was hyperactive and volatile. I had extreme reactions to ordinary things. I was not as solid as I thought I was. I was energy.

#6

I was a difficult child, and my mother dedicated herself to giving me the most wonderful childhood. But I was also different, and I would often absorb the emotions of others. It would be years before I realized that this strange ability of mine was actually not that strange.

#7

Empathy is the capacity to understand and share the emotions of others. It is one of the ways we are profoundly connected as human beings. It is the reason we experience joy when our favorite team wins, because we happily absorb the elation of the players.

#8

I had a connection to people around me that was so powerful that I couldn’t escape their feelings and emotions. I was also connected to people who had passed away. My mother told me that the abilities I had ran in her family for generations.

#9

Omi, my grandmother, was a psychic. She had a special deck of cards that she kept hidden away. Every now and then, usually on Sunday afternoons, if one of her cousins came to visit and asked her to take out the cards, Omi would lay them on the table and interpret them in search of their fortune.

#10

My mother and aunt were both premonitory dreamers, and they would often receive visions and dreams about things that would happen in the future. They were not at all skeptical about these dreams and visions, and they found them comforting.

#11

I learned that my aunt and mother had given me a gift that was from my grandfather, who had died nine months before I started sixth grade. It was a beautiful silver bracelet with the names of several Australian cities on it. I wore it always.

#12

I had the ability to see people in colors by the time I was twelve. It didn’t always happen, but it happened often enough that I got used to it. The ability was harmless and sometimes even amusing.

#13

I had a crush on a classmate in seventh grade, and as I got older, I developed crushes on other boys. I was always confused about my abilities, because they were positive, but they also led to me developing crushes on boys who didn’t return my feelings.

#14

I was in love with Kevin, my boyfriend, in tenth grade. I knew we weren’t meant to stay together, but I loved him all the same. I learned that we can let people go on their paths while still wishing them love.

#15

I had the ability to read people’s emotions and energies. I could see colors around people and use those colors to help me understand the world around me. I had the ability to look into people’s lives and know things about them.
