Description

A beautiful book which for the first time explores the relationship between the cycles of Venus and Mars and their impact on our lives. Using many case histories the author shows how, although synastry is important, possibly of greater importance is the aspect between the two planets within their cycles because that can dictate the timing of key moments in a relationship. She shows how the degree of the original conjunction between the two planets ('the degree of passion'), based on the time of birth can indicate the kind of the people we are attracted to and the course a romance can follow. A really absorbing book which will prompt hours of research

I wish to express my deep gratitude to the many people who have assisted me during the process of writing of this book.
Firstly, I want to thank Martin Lewicki who set my course on the day he told me about the 32-year cycle of Venus and Mars. I am grateful to fellow astrologers Roderick Kidston, for urging me to write this book, and Michelle Proctor for her friendship and enthusiastic encouragement during my early stages of research.
I wish to express my appreciation to Bil Tierney for taking the time to read a large section of the manuscript and providing many useful suggestions. Thanks also to John Martineau for granting permission to reproduce his exquisite illustrations and to Astro.com for supplying the data on Venus. Paul Westran and Adam Gainsburg took the time to respond to my emails and I d like to extend a special thank you to Amelia and Tom for allowing me to use their birth charts.
I d like to acknowledge a special group of wonderful friends and fellow writers; Mandy Burton, Carol Challis, Kim Challis, Lynne Siejka and Blaise Van Hecke, for their insightful feedback, encouragement and support.
I especially wish to mention the invaluable assistance given to me by my partner Neil Dennis, who created many wonderful diagrams from my pencilled layouts. In addition he provided editing suggestions and feedback. He also explained the copper-iron relationship to me and helped write the material on electro-magnetism in Section Two. Neil has guided me throughout this project with his vast knowledge, practical skills and patient understanding.
I am truly blessed by his support and generosity and the wonderful relationship we share. Nine months after I first began investigating the Sacred Dance of Venus and Mars, he opened my heart to love.
Foreword
My personal journey in writing this book began some years ago when I happened to notice that Venus and Mars were about to make a conjunction. This is not unusual, for the cosmic lovers often unite, on average once a year. But just how regularly do Venus and Mars kiss? It was a question I had never asked myself before.
Planets move in cyclic patterns and align at regular intervals; Neptune and Pluto unite every 492 years, Saturn and Jupiter align every 20 years, the Sun and Moon once a month, but the Venus-Mars cycle seemed to defy explanation. Conjunctions between Venus and Mars can occur several weeks apart, several months apart, up to almost two years apart. Unlike other planets, their periodic conjunctions jump back and forth through the zodiac in a seemingly random way.
As I began researching their orbital cycles and synodic relationship, I quickly became engrossed. I couldn t find a pattern to their motion, and yet there must be one.
After some fruitless enquiries, astronomer Martin Lewicki told me that Venus and Mars have a 32-year cycle. This tweaked my curiosity further, for how could Venus and Mars possibly have a 32-year cycle when neither of their orbits is anywhere near this long? Intrigued by this mystery, I embarked on a quest to investigate the Venus-Mars cosmic dance.
In a way it should come as no surprise that the Venus-Mars synodic cycle is complicated; after all, their celestial dance mirrors the complex nature of our personal relationships: as above; so below.
When I began investigating the Venus-Mars cycle I had been single for more than ten years. For me, relationships had always been hit and miss affairs, mostly miss. In my heart I was secretly hoping that if I could comprehend the Venus-Mars cycle it might also help me find love. Then I noticed that I was having a Venus Return and a Mars Return on the same day! Without a doubt this was a clear signal of encouragement from the cosmos.
In less than a year I found love. Finding the love of my life in the midst of researching the relationship between Venus and Mars has made me realise the importance of getting the cosmic timing right. Yes, synastry is important; as is the condition of our natal Venus and Mars, but comprehending their cyclic motion in the heavens brings a whole new dimension to our understanding of relationships.
The mystery of love is mirrored in the timeless paths these celestial lovers travel in the heavens. Their heavenly relationship, like love itself, is complex and mysterious, but its beauty and power is revealed to us when we take a closer look.

Introduction
The world has changed and we have evolved. Both women and men have become more conscious. Over recent decades gender roles have drastically altered and relationships have too. Our ancestors could never have imagined the many different types of relationship and family structures that exist today. While much has changed, one thing about relationships remains the same; they are often rather complicated.
Despite the many changes we have seen since the social revolution of the 1960s, women are still the ones who give birth. Men, by virtue of their physiology, are still more remote from parenting than women.
This gives rise to different psychological dynamics in girls and boys as they mature.
Developmental psychologists recognise the importance of two primary factors in childhood; children need to feel secure and loved by having their basic needs met, and at the same time they must be allowed to separate from their parents in order to grow into a healthy, happy adults.
One of the main challenges in terms of this process of development is connected to our relationship with the parent of the same sex. Mother-daughter and father-son relationships are generally more complex than mother-son and father-daughter relationships because children need to identify with, as well as separate from, the parent of the same sex.
Mothers, as primary care-givers, often behave more protectively towards their daughters, because they more closely identify with them than with their sons. Girls get their sense of self from their mothers, which is why it is often difficult for mothers and daughters to separate psychologically from one another. 1
Consequently, girls have to work harder than boys to establish their independence. In order to do this, and forge their own identity the main task girls face is to separate from their mothers.
Of course boys need to psychologically break free from mother too, but since they are biologically different from her, subconsciously they are already aware of being separate.
Boys need a positive male role model to give them an idea of what it is to be a man, but they often have a hard time connecting with their fathers who in one way or another are often absent or more remote from the family. The main challenge for boys is to learn to connect.
Girls need a positive father image in order to develop healthy personal relationships with the opposite sex, but a girl s relationship with her father is not tied to her personal identity like it is for boys.
Though gender roles have changed over the years, it is still true that women identify more personally with Venus and men with Mars.
As the first planet inward from Earth, and our closest planetary neighbour (apart from the Moon) Venus is the key feminine archetype. Symbolising beauty and love, self esteem and relationship, Venus represents the law of attraction, our core values and the need for closeness and connection.
Mars is the key symbol of masculine strength. As the next planet orbiting outward from Earth and natural ruler of the Ascendant, Mars represents our sense of individuality, independence, self expression and autonomy.
These critical aspects of life are mirrored in the cyclic journey of Venus and Mars in the heavens, whose glyphs are identical to those we use to distinguish the sexes. Biologically too, every one of us is the product of these cosmic lovers whose intimate union creates new life.
Regardless of our gender, or sexual orientation, Venus and Mars are found in every birth chart and so every one of us needs to experience love while being free to be ourselves and act independently.
Today women are much more independent and in touch with their Mars nature than they once were. Men have also grown in their capacity to express love and connect emotionally. Yet the challenge we all face is to find the right balance between self and others.
This book examines the planetary synodic cycles of Venus and Mars and other facets of their movement in the heavens. These patterns mirror our relationships and can tell us a great deal about ourselves. In the first Part, Rhythm of the Dance, we explore the nature of love and learn the basic dance steps of the planets. In Part two we take a closer look at the Sun-Mars cycle and the Sun-Venus cycle. Mars describes our journey towards becoming a separate individual an
