This book is devoted to bringing forth new material to help you understand Rahu and Ketu, the Lunar Nodes, in the birth chart. They are the karmic axis of our lives: the invisible link between past lives and the psychological dilemmas of the present. They represent the hidden side of human nature, our psychological characters, the interplay of the shadows within us - both good and bad - our fears, sorrows, unfulfilled desires, doubts, unhappiness, strengths and weaknesses. A connection has to be established between the practicalities of life and the deep mysteries of our past. Through this journey, you will not only discover yourself but will be able to lead life with strength rather than weakness.
What are Rahu and Ketu?
Rahu Ketu is the Sanskrit name given collectively to the Nodes of the Moon: Rahu is the North Node and Ketu is the South Node, but they are often referred to jointly as Rahu Ketu. They are not physical bodies, but the two points at which the orbit of the Moon intersects the ecliptic or the apparent path of the Sun around the Earth. When the Moon is moving from south to north and intersects the ecliptic, that point is called Rahu or the North Node. When the Moon passes from north to south, the intersection is called Ketu or the South Node. When the Moon intersects the apparent path of the Sun, it disturbs the electromagnetic field and this can create eclipses, which are considered full of occult significance. The Moon crosses this intersection every thirteen days, but eclipses only occur when the Sun, Earth and Moon are in particular alignment. A solar eclipse occurs during the New Moon when the Sun is in exact alignment with the Earth and Moon, and the Moon is +/- 18 degrees from the nodes. From the Earth’s point of view, the Moon’s shadow falls on the Sun and we are momentarily in darkness. A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth is exactly aligned between a Full Moon and the Sun, and the Moon is +/- 11 degrees from the nodal position. The light to the Moon is then blocked and we see just its ghostly shadow. The eclipses follow the axis of the transiting lunar nodes, so if for example they are transiting the Taurus/Scorpio axis, that is where the eclipses will occur. You can find out where the eclipses were happening around the time of your birth by studying the positions of Rahu and Ketu on your natal chart. Rahu and Ketu move in a retrograde motion, taking 18 years to complete one cycle of the zodiac and staying in one sign for approximately 18 months. The nodes indicate the precise point of harmony with the three most important influences in our life- the Sun, the Earth and the Moon. This relationship plays an important part in the unfolding of individual consciousness. The symbol of Rahu and Ketu is the serpent and they represent the Kundalini Shakti (power).

Solar Eclipse

Lunar Eclipse
The Importance of the Nodes in Vedic Astrology
Rahu and Ketu are the key to unlocking the relationship of the soul with its past life. They have been given the status of planets to emphasise their significance and are known as chayya grahas (shadow planets). They have no substance and are physically non-existent as they are points in the ecliptic, yet their influence is full of potency and spiritual significance. The nodes represent polarities with a mission to churn up our lives in order to bring out the hidden potential and wisdom that has been gathered from the karma of previous lives. In keeping with their shadowy nature they work on a psychological level, but in both the mundane world and in spiritual life. Their function in the material realm urges us to redirect our desires: what is darkness to a person enmeshed in materialistic ambitions can be powerful spiritual energy for those on the path of moksha and spiritual enlightenment.
Rahu and Ketu represent our inner struggles. In the physical world we are accustomed to fighting external aggressors, but the nodes represent the internal battle between our own positive and negative forces. Exactly where this battle will manifest is indicated by the nodal axis. Taken together Rahu and Ketu represent both the best and worst aspects of our personality and they are in a continual struggle for supremacy. All of us have a darker side to our nature, which if left unchecked would create havoc within our lives. By trying to control it, we learn the true lesson of Rahu and Ketu and can express the illuminating side of both their natures.
Rahu, Ketu and the Eclipses
As Rahu and Ketu symbolically eclipse the Sun (consciousness) and the Moon (the mind), they have a great part to play in darkening our perspective in readiness for the bringing in of new light. They deal with the concept of death and re-birth, transformation and regeneration. During eclipses the light from the Luminaries is darkened creating powerfully psychic energies, pregnant with new information and occult power, which in turn leads to a rebirth of the Sun and the Moon after the eclipse has passed. The role of the nodes in this powerful alignment of Sun, Moon and Earth is to act as ultimate controllers of destiny. The Rahu Ketu axis in the birth chart represents your own personal eclipse point; how you struggle with the destiny imposed on you from your past life karma. These struggles bring about the flowering of your personality and enable you to overcome issues of the past. In a sense Rahu and Ketu can represent both restrictions and liberation.
The Sun represents the soul and the Moon its reflection - a reflection that is present in the mind of every individual. In a perfect state, both planets are timeless and unfettered by any physical restrictions, but Rahu and Ketu can cast a shadow over them. Just as the eclipse causes the light from the Sun or Moon to be blocked from us on Earth, so can the nodes create problems that make us feel we were born into a spiritual darkness. In the birth chart, the nodes control karma, giving us the impression that our lives/souls are no longer eternal but subject to the laws of the world. Thankfully this feeling is only temporary - in the same way that an eclipse is soon over, we are also sure to find our own light. We begin the search, cut through the shadows of the mind and start to embrace that light.
Karma and Rahu Ketu
The word karma literally means ‘action’. Every action taken in our current, past and future lives is our karma. We choose from our previous karma the issues we wish to face in this life, both negative and positive: by addressing them now we give our souls the chance to mature and move towards their ultimate goal of enlightenment. Like beads on a necklace, previous lifetimes are interconnected by an invisible thread - which is Rahu Ketu. As the indicators and the Lords of Karma in the birth chart they represent the stumbling blocks which when overcome, eventually lead to liberation and maturity of the soul. Ketu deals with past Karma and Rahu with the need to create new karma.
The Myth of Naga Vasuki
There is a wonderful myth concerning Rahu Ketu, which illustrates beautifully how (and why) we are constantly pulled in two directions at once:
There was once a Great War between the gods and the demons for the control of the universe. Naga Vasuki was a demon serpent who ruled the Patala Loka, the underworld. At some point (and no doubt for his own motives) he decided he would help the gods in their search for Amrita, the nectar of immortality. H
