Trick or Treat?
Who doesn’t remember the excitement and adven ture of dressing up in their favorite costume to travel the neighborhood for as many pieces of candy as we could possibly scavenge? Adults and children alike enjoy joining in the festivities commonly known as Halloween. In a marketing sense, Halloween has become big business today. The holiday is now the second most pop ular event for marketing activity, following Christmas. According to a National Retail Foundation survey, American consumers spent over $4.96 billion for Hal 1 loween in 2006, an average of $59.06 per person. The National Confectioners Association reported in 2005 that 80 percent of adults planned to give out candy to trickortreaters, and that 93 percent of children 2 planned to go trickortreating. Even grownups are actively involved, as at least one in three adults will buy costumes for themselves. “Halloween has turned into the second or thirdbiggest party night of the year, depending on who’s counting, behind New Year’s Eve and Super Bowl Sunday. Hallmark makes more than 3 300 Halloween cards.” Who is driving the growth in Halloween? It’s not older, affluent parents driving the surge in spending, but an increasing number of 18to24yearolds. Among the 18to24yearolds surveyed for the National Retail Federation by BIGresearch, responses were as follows: 5

THE FACTS ONHALLOWEEN
85% said they planned to celebrate Halloween this year, up from 67% last year. Overall, 64% of adults surveyed said they would observe the holiday in some way, versus 53% last year. Nearly twothirds of the 8,001 adults sur veyed for the retailers group said they planned to pass out candy this year. About 30% said they would attend or throw a party, and 49% said they were planning to deco rate their yard. Indeed, sales of decorations are expected to be the biggest mover, rising to $1.3 billion from $840 4 million last year.
More than ever before, Halloween has become an enor mously popular holiday. Interestingly, Halloween is also National Magic Day, observed worldwide by magicians, with even a National Magic Week observed the week of 5 October 25 to 31.
Halloween at work
Halloween is being embraced and observed in the workplace as never before. According to Human Resource Management’s 2000 Benefits Study, more than onethird of U.S. companies offer 6 some sort of workplace Halloween celebration.
But many people have mixed feelings about the issue of Halloween. Do its pagan religious associations disqualify it spiritually or ethically as an activity that Christians can celebrate? InThe Facts on Halloween, we’ll investigate the origin of Halloween, its historic and contemporary relation to paganism and witchcraft, its symbols, and some of the mysteries commonly asso ciated with Halloween, such as ghosts, haunted houses, and magic. We will also provide biblical and practical guidelines for evaluating Halloween from a Christian perspective.
