CHIRON, PHOLUS AND NESSUS: TO THE EDGE AND BEYOND
The ancient science of astrology, founded on the correlation between celestial movements and human experience, recognizes the universe as an indivisible whole in which all parts are interconnected. Mirroring this perception of the unity of life, modern physics has revealed the web of relationship underlying everything in existence. Despite the inevitable backlash as old paradigms expire, we are now entering an age where scientific explanations and models of the cosmos are more in accord with astrological principles. In such a climate, astrology is emerging from relative obscurity to become once again a serious study offering a greater understanding of our true nature as inhabitants of a living cosmos imbued with sacred mysteries.
Melanie Reinhart was born in Zimbabwe, where the night skies inspired her vocation of astrology more than fifty years ago. She holds a B.A. in Music and Drama, and is an award-winning diploma-holder of the Faculty of Astrological Studies and in 2009 she became one of their patrons. In 2004, she received the Charles Harvey Award, given by the Astrological Association of Great Britain, ‘for exceptional service to astrology’. She has been a professional astrologer since 1975; her rich background experience in many psychological and spiritual disciplines draws a worldwide clientele. Melanie has taught for some of the world’s leading astrology schools including the Faculty of Astrological Studies, the London School of Astrology, the Centre for Psychological Astrology and Astro*Synthesis. She has also offered lectures and workshops at many local and international venues, and runs her own programme, based mostly in London.
First published in 1996 by the CPA Press as part of their seminar series, this book contains an edited transcript of a seminar which was part of the Diploma programme of the Centre for Psychology Astrology in London. In preparing this new edition, extensive revision was avoided to allow the material to retain the freshness of the spoken word, as in the original edition. Technical information has been substantially updated, and a section on the naming of Nessus has been added.
Other published work by Melanie Reinhart includes numerous journal articles and contributions to the anthologies Modern South Africa in Search of a Soul (1990), Wilderness and the Human Spirit (1997) and The Mars Quartet (2001). Her books have been translated into seven languages, and include Chiron and the Healing Journey (1989/2010), Incarnation (1997/2002) and Saturn: Time Heritage and Substance (2013). Writing the original edition of this book was made possible by the generous interest shown and assistance given by many people, some of whom are mentioned here by name, with my apologies if I have forgotten anyone. My thanks to the students who attended the original CPA seminar and many subsequent workshops elsewhere, bringing their experience, eagerness to learn, and their intense participation. They were kind enough to bear with me while I stumbled through new ideas and thought out loud. Many people, often during seminars and readings, have shared their insights or told me their own Centaur stories. Some of those dialogues are included here, and were instrumental in stimulating my ongoing interest in this material.
Babs Kirby sent me an article which was pivotal in my trail of discovery, and Richard Mowbray provided a precious copy of Mott’s astrological work. Brian Clark first told me in 1992 about the new discoveries when I still wasn’t sure I wanted to know; Dermod Moore surfed the net for the latest research; Jane Grant and Teresa Moring helped in the essential task of preliminary reading. Grateful thanks are also due to friends who helped restore my sense of humour when it felt like the herds of Centaurs were stampeding: Jo Lapage-Brown, ‘Bessie’ Brown, Darby Costello, Moy Keightley, Barbara Sherrington, Erin Sullivan, Jane Grant, Jane Ridder-Patrick, Christine Murdock, Geraldine Hallett, Laurena Chamlee-Cole. Salena Oppenheimer paid wonderfully Virgoan attention to the myriad details in her role as astrological proof-reader, and her opinions and advice about a number of textual queries were invaluable. Tamara’s design work on the cover and diagrams for this edition were much appreciated; Frank Clifford has been a dear friend and colleague who has offered unfailing encouragement; Eric Francis of Planetwaves has generously shared his own writings and research on the Centaurs over many years; Martin Jones taught me so much about the inner rhythms of the body and how they relate to the cosmos. To Evelyn, Madé and Ilhu in Penestanan – thank you for wonderful fun and support, and for helping out in ways too numerous to list.
Last, but by no means least, my gratitude goes to Liz Greene, director of the Centre for Psychological Astrology, who had the courage, curiosity and adventurous spirit to risk publishing the first edition of this material, and who allowed Starwalker Press to follow it with a revision, and then this stand-alone version. Her immediate open-mindedness, good will and interest were pivotal in this material being made available, and CPA Press was perhaps the only publisher who would have taken it on at that time. This meant that early on, many others had access to the new information, which enabled them to do their own research.
CHIRON, PHOLUS AND NESSUS: TO THE EDGE AND BEYOND
This seminar was originally given on 14 January 1996 at Regent’s College, London, as part of the winter term of the seminar programme of the Centre for Psychological Astrology. Owing to the exploratory nature of the subject matter, further material has since been integrated into the latter part of the original seminar transcript, from conversations with many individuals (1995–2011), and also from seminars or lectures given at various locations worldwide. In addition, the reader will find the technical material offered in this 3 rd edition has been substantially updated, thanks to the generosity of master programmer Dieter Koch.
Introduction
I’d like to start our seminar today by reading a translation of a poem by Rudolf Steiner:
The stars once spoke to mankind
Their growing silent is world destiny.
Awareness of this silence
can be painful for earthly man.
Yet in the muted silence there now ripens
what man speaks to the stars.
The hearing of this speaking
Can strengthen the spirit of humanity. [1]
I began with this poem because, although he says, ‘The stars once spoke to mankind, but they grew silent’, I personally don’t believe that they did. I think that we think they grew silent because we simply stopped listening, or forgot how to, or ceased to believe in such so
