Description

The author explores the idea that the most powerful astrological technique is a quiet, meditative mind. The book presents astrology as a form of active meditation where we contemplate whatever is arising with expectancy, receptivity, and conscious use of will to shape what unfolds. The author presents meditations on the spiritual lessons of the planets and zodiacal signs, and, with the plentiful use of case histories, describes the technique of symbol amplification, which enables us to unfold the deepest meanings of chart symbols. The book ends with a discussion of astrology as a spiritual practice.

To the consciousness that has realized the existence of cycles and is able to shift gears from the profane to the sacred, the whole of living becomes imbued with the magic of eternity. Every event is accepted as a necessary phase of the ritual process of existence radiating at every moment the significance and inner peace that wells out from the security of knowing oneself to be an essential and operative part of a vast cyclic whole. This is the symbolic life. It is also the life of wisdom, for to be wise is to know with unimpeachable knowing that the whole is fulfilling itself at every moment through and within every act of life, once this life, illumined by nonpossessive love, is rooted in the certainty that order, beauty, rhythmic interplay and the harmony of ever balanced opposites are here and now, indestructibly .

Astrology, Meditation, and the Fearless Contemplation of Change
I honor the light within you. In this book we are going to explore how the sacred art of astrology can help us find our way and become awakened human beings. We are indeed fortunate to have the direct guidance from the universe that we get from astrology, which leads us through a lifelong training for enlightenment. Through the wisdom of astrology, may we reach our goal of fully unfolding our evolutionary potential!
I have always viewed astrology not so much as a means of prediction but as a tool for the evolution of consciousness. It is a contemplative discipline: We meditate on our charts, and watch ourselves unfolding like deities taking form before our inner eye; and we actively participate in the embodiment of spiritual archetypes. Each transit is a step toward fuller incarnation of the deity, the Self, the essence that we are. Moreover, astrology brings the sacred right into the heart of the profane, into our everyday lives. The divine intelligence is felt in every moment and every movement of evolution.
The mature practice of astrology is defined not so much by a set of techniques as it is by an attitude or stance. Ultimately the most powerful astrological technique is not progressions or solar returns, midpoints, harmonics or dasa periods. The most powerful astrological "technique" is a quiet mind, a stance of contemplation. No matter which techniques we use, when our minds are agitated our studies of astrology result in fear of the future, of malefic planets, and of challenging aspects or transits. When our minds are clear and quiet, we begin to discern the meaning of even the most tumultuous events in our lives so that we remain centered, calm, and hopeful. Thus, I consider a personal meditation practice one of the keys to a positive, growth-oriented approach to the celestial art.
All too often I speak with people who have been terrorized by dismal and often irresponsible astrological predictions. For example, Gwen had been told by an astrologer that she was likely to die or suffer other catastrophes because transiting Pluto was conjunct her Sun. While transiting Pluto may manifest through crisis events, often this crisis is one that leads to profound growth and transformation. During this transit, the crisis Gwen encountered was a hostile corporate takeover of the company where she worked. She skillfully positioned herself so that she ended up in a better position within the reorganized company. During the transit she became stronger, tougher, wiser about the ways of power in the world. Not only was the prediction of death completely wrong but it also completely failed to see the deeper dimensions and growth potential of the Pluto transit.
The purpose of this book is to explore how we can go beyond the traditional black and white, malefic-benefic way of thinking about astrological influences. One famous astrologer told me the period when transiting Saturn was conjunct my Venus would be "bad for relationships." This simplistic statement failed to grasp or convey the complexity of that period and the growth that I experienced in my capacity to relate in a mature and committed way. I was determined to look at my fears and to master them (Saturn). The prediction was, in fact, wrong. I got involved in a stable and loving relationship at that time. As students of astrology, we try to understand the purpose of each event in furthering our growth. The key is a meditative attitude. Another key is the ability to look at any chart symbol in a number of ways, chewing it over and digesting it thoroughly, looking at it from many angles and reflecting on its many possible meanings. I’ll discuss this later in the chapter on Symbol Amplification.
Astrology is the art of contemplating the ever-changing moments of time. As we gain proficiency in prediction, we also begin to discern what the predicted events might mean . We begin to approach study of the birth chart as a form of active meditation where we contemplate whatever we see coming up astrologically, or happening right now, with an attitude of quiet expectation and receptivity to whatever wants to unfold. The deepest meaning of planetary symbols is discovered through personal revelation, through the astrological meditation practice where we sit with a quiet mind and contemplate natal chart symbols, or a current or upcoming transit or progression.
The first thing I am going to ask you to do, right now, is to take a few breaths. If you want to deepen your state of consciousness and your study of astrology, begin by opening up the breath. I am amazed that no one else has stated this before that the breath is an important tool in the practice of astrology. As your breath deepens, let the mind’s turbulence quiet down until your awareness plunges deeply within, deep into the ocean of Consciousness. As you contemplate your natal planets and current transits, breathe, and ask, "What is the purpose of this? What is the highes
