Description

This is the first systematic presentation of Hellenistic astrology to the modern astrological world, and as such it uncovers rigorous techniques that have been lost to us for centuries. How exactly did ancient astrologers assess a chart for fame, career, and parents, love, and happiness? This book surveys ancient depictions of planets, affiliations between the planets and the zodiac, lots, houses or places, aspects, orientality, and fixed stars. The final chapters survey predictive systems used by ancient astrologers. Ancient natal and predictive techniques are applied to the charts and lives of over forty well-known historical and contemporary figures.Students and professional astrologers will find this book a treasure of astrological insight, technique, and new interpretative possibilities. Not only will you gain knowledge of how ancient astrologers practiced their trade, but you will also have new tools that apply to modern life.

PREFACE
Astrology is one of the great adventures of human civilization and has contributed greatly to people s lives and to our culture over time. Astrology s purpose is to use the positions of the planets and stars in the sky to gather information on the individual and on humanity. Astrology is a system that enables us to understand the past, present and the future within a universe full of meaning.
This noble enterprise has spanned different cultures and historical periods and has had its times of flowering and being on the fringes, yet over time astrology has remained with us, always adapting to new conditions.
The basic fields of astrology have not changed for thousands of years. Astrologers today are less concerned than those in the past with the direct effects of the planets on this physical earth, but instead read the sky for how it can symbolize circumstances and events in our lives. Some astrologers today apply the symbols of astrology to the larger and smaller movements of history, politics, and culture: the field of mundane astrology. Based upon the rising degrees and planetary configurations for the time of birth, astrologers can determine the qualities of an individual, and make predictions about likely events in the context of that person s life. This is called natal astrology and it is the focus of this book.
Over many centuries, individual life circumstances may change but our human concerns have changed very little. For centuries people have wanted to know about their marriages and business prospects, their family and community and their own physical and psychological condition. They have also been interested in applying astrology to their prospective lovers or marriage partners and to their children. They also want to know how these issues change over a lifetime. As in the past, people are still interested in how long they or others might live.
In my view, modern astrology has become weaker by deviating from its tradition, and so I need to begin with some criticisms of modern practice.
Influenced by the theosophical movement of the 1800s, some astrologers have become interested in the soul s progress through lifetimes and its ongoing spiritual education. Sometimes the astrologer has been able to greatly help the individual; there is, however, a temptation to use astrological symbolism to impose one s spiritual ideology upon the client. A client can neither affirm nor deny the astrologer s speculations about previous lifetimes, and the astrologer can miss the urgency of the client s present circumstances.
Following the theosophical tradition, some astrologers try to use astrological symbolism to assert that human consciousness as a whole is evolving. As attractive as this notion may seem to us, I do not see that we have become better or worse, any more or less ethical or spiritual, over the many centuries of human culture.
Influenced by the speculations of Jungian psychology and other psychoanalytic schools of the mid-twentieth century, some astrologers have been more interested in examining the unconscious than the real life and circumstances of the person. This can result in astrological interpretations that accent the extreme and the unknowable. Newer astrologers often fall victim to this tendency. Astrology s symbols are often reduced to psychological factors only, to the detriment of the multilevel richness of astrology s symbolism.
These two approaches - the transcendent and the psychodynamic - may also set up the astrologer as some kind of high priest, something for which most astrologers are not qualified. Astrology can do better by serving its original and ongoing purpose: helping people with
