This interesting book ‘Adventures With Evil Spirits’ by Principal Dr. Joshph J. Ghosh, Bengali Christian educationist, medium, spiritual healer and writer presents before us a very thrilling account of the working of Evil Spirits who harm human beings in many ways due to several motives and provocations.
As many as 92 case studies of people affected by Evil Spirits and cured by this noted spiritual healer of post-Independence era of over country have been presented in this book. They force us to change the so called modern arrogant belief that there is nothing like Evil Spirits. As a matter fact, such Spirits do exist and they trouble and harm people in countless ways. How to avoid them or keep away from their influences and how to lead a happy, healthy and right sort of moral and elevating spiritual life - this we learn from this interesting book.
In view of its significance as much it is being repinted with necessary editorial treatment, as a sort of spiritual service to people. It was first published in 1944. Proper chapterization has been done and ‘Contents’ given so that the readers may find it easy and attractive to read and assimilate its message. I owe a very heavy debt of gratitude to my esteemed and dear friend, the late Mr. C. W. Boyle, Proprietor of The Mission Press and the able and learned Editor of “The Weekly Observer,” whose premature death on I mourn very deeply. He very kindly published these adventures in his popular paper week by for the benefit of its readers, who appreciated them very much.
I offer my thanks to Mr. K. Chandy, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Mysore University. The book owes its existence to him. It was he who first suggested to me to bring out these adventures in book form and offered a generous donation of Rs.50 towards the cost of its printing. I am also grateful to my old student and friend, Pandit Sitla Prasad Shukla, the Raj Vaid, who helped me greatly in this work, by bringing to me for treatment so many cases of demon possession which were completely cured.
May this little book prove very interesting and instructive to the readers and may it bring honour and glory to Almighty God our Heavenly Father, is the prayer of its author.
For the last five years I have employed Mr. Zainul Abdin and Mr. Abrar Husain who were formerly students of Class X but now are working as teachers.
An English Professor of Science of the London University wrote to me and asked me why spiritualists employed young, nervous delicate girls as mediums. This charge can not be brought against me. Mediums are used specially to find out the presence of evil spirits and to identify them; but the whole work of casting out evil spirits is done by me.
THE OBJECTS FOR WHICH THE BOOK IS WRITTEN ARE: These adventure were published from time to time in “The Leader” of Allahabad; in the “Amrita Bazar Patrika” of Calcutta, in the “Bombay Chronicle” , and in the “Here and There” column of “The Statesman” by ‘Kim’. For the last four years these adventures appeared regularly almost every week in the Allahabad “Weekly Observer” through the generous courtesy of the Editor. Some prominent readers of “The Weekly Observer” who were keenly interested in these adventures suggested to me to have them published in book form because they said they would prove very useful and valuble to those scientists who are conducting researches in the psychic and the spirtualistic realms. A large number of the educated classes has no faith in life after death and in the existence of spirits. If they read this book with a dispassionate and candid mind they will be convinced of these important truths. All over the country there are numerous cases of possession by evil spirits which torment and trouble their victims very grievously. This book will bring to them a message of salvation and freedom from the control of evil spirits. This book is chiefly written for the glory of God Who has in His mercy granted to His servant powers and authority to cast out evil spirits by prayer in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I must remove here certain misunderstandings: This work is not professional. It is also not a money-making venture. The gift of God can neither be sold nor can it be bought. Our Lord says “Freely ye have received, freely ye give.’ There are two kind of evil possession: (i) simple evil possession, (ii) evil possession with illness. In the case of simple evil possession the patient is at once restored to normal health and strength as soon as the spirit is cast out. In the case of possession with illness, the evil spirit is cast out but the disease which the evil spirit had caused during the time the patient was under its control can not be cured at once. Evil spirits have informed me again and again that they can cause illness, but they can not cure it. For such illness caused by evil spirits medical treatment is necessary.

SPIRITUALISM
Spiritualism is a very mysterious subject and at the same time it is very wide, deep and difficult, hence it is not meant for all. Only those who possess spiritual powers can learn it, and acquire powers enough to use it profitably for the Glory of God and for the good of suffering humanity.
I propose to deal with only two of its aspects, viz . communication with the spirits in the other world, and secondly the healing of spirit possession by casting out evil spirits.
Spirit Communication
Whether a spirit which has left its body can be called back, is one of the most important questions. According to the Theory of Transmigration of Soul, Hindus do not believe in spirit communuication. They hold that a spirit which has taken birth again can not be called as it is already in this world in some person’s body. According to Islam, a spirit ceases to exist after death till the day of resurrection. It is a general belief among the Christians that spirits after death sleep and rest from their labour till the day of Lord when they will rise again. Spirit communication, therefore, by the Christian masses is considered a farce and a hallucination, and seances are frauds and exception.
