How Do You Quantify Success?
SUCCESS IS A RELATIVE TERM, as the following story will show:
A rich industrialist was horrified to find a fisherman lying lazily beside his boat, smoking a pipe.
“Why aren’t you out fishing?” asked the industrialist.
“Because I have caught enough fish for the day,” answered the fisherman.
“Why don’t you catch some more?”
“What would I do with them?”
“You could earn more money,” was the industrialist’s reply. “With that you could have a motor fixed to your boat and go into deeper waters and catch more fish. Then you would make enough to buy nylon nets. These would bring you more fish and more money. Soon you would have enough money to own two boats … may be even a fleet of boats. Then you would be a rich man like me.”
“What would I do then?” asked the fisherman.
“Then you could really enjoy life.”
“What do you think I am doing right now?”

PREFACE

Think, plan, work and achieve it. That is the secret of success. If you believe that you can be good and are good, you will be good. Every one of us, at every dawn, has an opportunity to sell cheerfulness and optimism to ourselves. We, all, are in charge of our own life. It is up to each one of us to decide just how frantically we want to excel in our work and our life. When you aspire to be desperately good, you will make a pledge to yourself to be so.
You should know what tasks you should be working on today, so that you can achieve your today’s as well as your medium and long-term goals, in due course of time. You need to delineate your vision for your own future as well as the future of your organisation to decide on your day-to-day deeds and actions. What you work on today will identify and pinpoint what you will become tomorrow. You need to have a vision, core values, a mission statement for your life and your work.
No man is an island. We are all inter-dependent, no matter in what position we might be placed. Your own performance and success directly affect the organization for which you might be working or even heading or owning it. The greatest ability, both in life and in business, is to get along with others and influence their actions, in the directions desired. Succeeding one time is not enough. You have to make winning a habit and make great things happen around you and for you.
It should not be forgotten, at any time, that people are your greatest assets, in whatever you are doing whether as a team leader or an employer or a fresh employee. Make your place a great place to work and work with. Being at odds with others along with weak and inadequate communication, backbiting, bickerings and badmouthing are the signs of poor management and lead to low morale. Everybody has his own approach for succeeding and leading others. There can be a lot of inconsistencies and contradictions in approaches, bordering on absurdities. But it is a fact that only that team wins which has the best players. Put it simply, it involves putting right people in the right slot. For leading others, by example, you have to give everything to whatever you are doing.
An important ingredient of success is to develop self- confidence as well as build it in others, through encouragement, caring and recognition. Self-confidence revitalizes and rejuvenates people with courage to strive hard, take risks and sometimes achieve the impossible. One thing is certain that jargon cannot stimulate. What is required is a clear message and the rewards that go with it. What is necessary in life is to be upbeat and have a positive outlook, in spite of difficulties and disasters we may meet. This book seeks to examine some of the issues and indicates the course which may give optimum dividends. There can be more than one way of succeeding in life; but without hard work, focus and dedication, such a quest will remain only a chimera. Read on and do let me know as to how you feel about the book. Any feedback will be welcome.

Discovering Yourself

I f we want to get more out of our life, we need to become more conscious and attentive, as to how we spend our time. We also need to assess as to what activities we engage in, and whether they add VALUE to our life or drain our energy and are the best use of our time. It is very important to determine the kind of things we do at our work. It is equally important to be conscious of as to how we spend our spare time, and the kind of people we spend our time with, or the conversations we engage in or the social or official programmes and meetings we attend. We need to look for ways to constantly streamline our techniques and systems, with a view to eliminate unproductive activities or negative conversations, interruptions and distractions. By monitoring our time, with attentiveness and watchfulness, we can eliminate unproductive activities. Conversely, we can do things that we enjoy, or that develop us personally or professionally. It is important not to allow others to gain control of our time and direct our life. This is the only way by which we can have greater levels of personal satisfaction and achievements. For instance, I went to a five-star hotel for dinner last week, which was hosted by a private airline. There was only one person known to me in the party, who is a former Home Secretary. He also was in the same condition. So we stuck with each other till I left after the party- after 45 minutes by my stopwatch. It becomes a frustrating exercise when you are among unknown faces. You have to keep on smiling and keep your jaws stretched with an artificial grin.
I excused myself at the end of 45 minutes and did not stay on for dinner, which would have meant another wait for two hours. In fact, I was one of the late arrivals, and the first to leave. This enabled me to do one hour of reading before going to sleep. Whatever I do, or want to do, I first assess whether I can make the BEST use of my time, energy and expertise. If something does not meet this criteria, then either I totally cut off from such an activity or engagement or give it the minimum time or combine it with some other useful activity. It is equally important to focus on doing the requisite things to meet your objectives, or goals, or your organisation’s goals. Whatever you do must fit within your overall mission and should move you toward your goals. I must also admit that before I realised how much of time I was wasting, I had been spending hours and hours in the inane company of many known and unknown people. I have never met or interacted with such people again in my life.
Decide on your goal and be clear on your strategy and the road map to get to your destination. Your strategies should help in realising your own and or your organisation’s objectives. Your team members, if any, should focus their time on activities that move you closer to those aspirations. Periodically, there should be an ongoing EVALUATION in order to assess the effectiveness, of your current approach. Check your road map regularly to ascertain if you are on the right track. As the District Superintendent or police chief of Bidar district in Karnataka, I had made it a practice to evaluate the crime control performance of all police officers working under me. I would review their work in a monthly meeting. I continued this practice till my retirement, including as Director CBI. It enabled me to know what was happening in the organisation and whether each person was conscious of his responsibility and role.
It is equally important to assess your personal effectiveness — whether it is accomplishing what you wish to achieve. A feel good factor, about your daily work and routine, is essential for achieving your objectives. There is no better way to do it, except to set and implement mid or periodical review points or checks.
