Time Management
By - Dr. Rekha Vyas
This book is dedicated to Nishitha Sharma (Nishi Didi) who has become an inspiration by writing a biography of an ever-struggling mother
Time is free, but it is priceless; you can’t own it but you can use it; you can’t keep it but you can spend it; Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back
Preface
When Shri Narendra Kumar Verma, the publisher of this book, proposed to me about writing a book on time management, each and every part of my mind was delighted. This book is not just a written set of words but is life-philosophy and discipline which are embedded in my body and mind. Since I have studied Sanskrit, I was aware of Satyuga, Dwapar yuga and Kalyuga and time management in these three yugas. During my study of mass communication and journalism, I was in touch with modern time management. Both these started giving speed to my favourite task. Since my student stage, I got an opportunity to associate myself with Akashvani. Everyday, I used to select articles and read them out. These were the tasks that used to help me practise time management. In small cities, there is no dearth of time and in big cities, there is no time at all. In such conditions, I became aware of the many forms of time in different environments and slowly, this became a habit and got into my mind and thus, it became an identical part of my personality.
I want to apologize to my friends and relatives because I could not give them enough time due to some reason. I could not attend their programmes, or I could attend those programmes for only short durations. Even then, they maintained their warmth and communication with me and did not mind this. They know that whenever they needed my service or time, I never failed to give my time to them.
I wasted a lot of time in my life and saw many people doing so. Thus, in such a case, I assimilated the experience of other people as well.
Through this book, I also got an opportunity to set scattered things at their proper places. This was a very pleasure-giving thing. The need to do it within time limits also proved to be a challenge. I am dedicating this book to Nishitha Sharma of Rajasthan. She recognizes and knows not only the time and person but also their delicateness. Nowadays, she is writing an biography of her mother; she is pretty fast in writing the same. She must be praised because she has taken risk of all levels to give voice to the silence of her mother. It is hoped that she would accept this bud of time.
There are many examples of kin in this. I am thankful to all those who have given overt or covert support to me. Father encouraged me and told me the importance of literature in our life. Everyone knows it but no one pays attention to it. Focussing on this is the gist of time managment. It is the butter that floats on the top. I shall stop here because I do not have to spend extra time. That’s it…!

Time Management is the Best Management

Howsoever short the life may be, it becomes more short due to the wastage of time.
-Johnson
This above — mentioned sentence is complete in itself, expanding it or defusing its components. If you control time you can control every thing (in a step-wise manner). Some people understand this sentence in this way —”if we control ourselves, we control every one else.” Till the time, we do not manage time and resources properly, we cannot control or manage even ourselves. Hence, time management and self management are synonymous. It has also been called self and total quality management.
The same facets are also known as perfect formulae for success, the art of living, the secrets of living etc. we have put time and ourselves in a task in such a manner that the 100 per cent of these two elements is given to that task so that we are able to achieve our goal in a stipulated time. This is called time management.
Some people consider management as a modern concept and a formulae to achieve an objective. They consider it to be a negative thought in this form. They think that it is only for physical or materialistic development. Through this, they think, one would be a slave under watch or stick. Hence, it amounts to becoming a machine. The truth of this observation can be felt only by practicing management.
I want to tell you all that time management is not to be named as an application alone. Rather, it can be tried at every level. It is a habit, it is an eternal formula for leading life in a proper manner. When we acquire this habit, we can make use of it at spiritual and all other levels of life. If we adopt it, we do not lose anything in life. A housewife can feel that she is going through the grind (of household chores). She wonders how a working woman does all this. If such a woman remains a victim of tiredness and languor she can take out time from her busy schedules to take rest and entertain herself such time becomes even more productive. You feel freshened up in this time you do whatever you like. In this process, you get changed, like a battery, without making much efforts. That is why a good time manager becomes capable of giving proper shapes to his imaginations and thoughts. Now we do not achieve or do time management simply by talking about it or learning about its intricacies, it is a very disciplined, ruledbased and internal system. From a superficial level, it appears to be external. While controlling time, adopting a reactionary attitude by seeing advise streams is not wisdom. Overall conditioning seems to be the best solution. That is why, at the world level, time management is becoming part of total management. The activity of mind, natural, quick-witted personality and the need for easy learning are helpful in every type of management.
Columbus set on to explore the world. He did not take anything along with him. He had determination, strong will and the ability to control any type of time. Had he thought about obstacles, uncertainly of success and death, he would not have been able to come out of his home. The skill of time management helps one achieve big targets. Had he taken enough resources with him but locked internal capability he would not have achieved such great success.
Drama Done Without Control
I see many shows. The technical preparations are superb but artists are not polished. These resources can help upto 10-20 per cent only. They cannot take the responsibility of the last 80 per cent of success. Due to bad luck we are imposing 80 per cent on 20 per cent hence the shop has only show-off but its products are in insipid.
We see the nature and creatures of this world. We are surprised to see how they are managed. We are pleased as well and discuss the phenomena with great enthusiasm but we do not try to adopt those features or phenomena in our life. In all of us, there is a biological clock. We do not know about it, leave alone forcusing and making use of it. Other animal use this biological clock to the hilt; that is why the Cock makes a noise early in the morning (at the same time). Our educators at home and all lessons help wind this spring of our biological clock. We are taught form the beginning that the early-morning bird catches the worm. Thus, our lesson is (or should be) -
उठ जाग मुसाफिर भोर भई अब रैन कहां जो सोवत है| जो सोवत है सो खोवत है जो जागत है सो पावत है||
Wake up at five and eat at ten. Eat at five and sleep at ten, that way, you would make your life ten to ten.
Since the time I have adopted the habit of time management, I do not have to take extra time out for entertaining myself. I am able to listen to songs or news while doing my household chores. Due to the pressure of work or due to practice we do some tasks as a matter of routine or habit.
I never feel that I am listening to songs even as I am nothing or vice-versa. I am in touch with news too. Such tasks save my time when I read the newspaper. I read 5-6 newspapers on a daily basis. When I used to read one. I used to take half an hour. Now, I take 1-5 hour and do 5-6 times more work. Some news are not worth reading. So, I find out the important facts and leave the least of news. I see only the major parts (Some or gist) of an editorial. In between, I take deep breaths and change postures. That way, I do exercise and pranayam. I never feel that I had taken extra time to do these exercises. This appears to me as comfortable as meditation, for it is done by sitting in the park instead of getting tired, I feel fresh. Some incidents make us happy some other make us serious. Some of them become fact of our diary. It is not that I do not gossip in the company of people I do that, I also spend time on (doing) external activities. Rather, I believe that after adopting the habit of time management, I have plenty of time at my disposal sometimes, I have to think about the ways to utilize that time which is plenty and at my disposal.
Stable Arrangement
Time management is a habit. It is a system for running life in a proper manner. It is the art of spending time, lights and resources to every piece of work complet
