Acknowledgments
This book is dedicated to my wife, Klade V. Jornyoun, who has been relentlessly supportive of me through it all, and to our lovely children: Valencia, Victoria, James Tepane, and Sianeh Leeneh. I am also grateful to my father-in-law, Theodore Hodge. He is the best father every son-in-law would love to have in his life. I am thankful to my sister Verlyn Porte, my mother, Esther Venn, for her unwavering and gracious love. Special thanks to my former professor and mentor, Dr. Brenda McGadney, who is always willing to listen and give me guidance. Thanks to John Jomo Morris and T. Weaseh Johnson, for being remarkable friends over the years. Special thanks to all the people with whom I formed a rewarding friendship and experience throughout my journeying from Liberia to living in Nigeria, taking trips to Ghana, and traveling by way of Benin and the Republic of Togo. There is no doubt that the relationships and experiences I gained have helped shape the way I view situations by being able to adapt and embrace change for my well-being and that of others. I am blessed to have you all in my life. I am graciously grateful to be surrounded by loving and caring people like you. And that’s awesome!
Introduction
A decisive turn can bring about progress and cause something to shift within us so we reach for a higher value. Sometimes meaningful change produces uneasiness but does help create the best minds to bring out a solution to improve lives. Change doesn’t always come easy. When we want to change something about our experience, we need to take action to change it. George Eliot wrote, “It will never rain roses: when we want to have more roses, we must plant more roses.”
When taking a picture, making a small change in the process can create a better image of the picture. What a small change can do is help create possibilities.
I used to go to a barbershop, and one afternoon I went to get a haircut and saw a complete change. They had rearranged the barbershop, repainted it, brought new chairs, hung new mirrors, and put words of inspiration on the walls. This was a fantastic turnaround, and customers were very pleased. The atmosphere became welcoming and uplifting. The little change each of us can make in a day can create an impact on our surroundings and our personal well-being. It’s always good to accept change as part of life and share the benefits change can bring. For example, I had to make some adjustments in my life to be able to reach my personal goals when I was faced with the choice of working a full-time job, a ten-hour shift to support my family, or continuing to attend college.
In my case, I decided to do both by managing my time, cutting down on hanging out on weekends with friends, focusing more on work, and going to college at the same time. In the end, I was able to achieve both by providing for my family and getting a college degree. I did the same thing when I decided to go to grad school by taking steps to help improve my situation while working the midnight shift and attending college in the evening to obtain my MBA in business administration.
Encouraging yourself and talking with others about the value of taking small steps daily to improve are excellent ways to welcome change in your life. In Lean In , Sheryl Sandberg wrote, “Talking can transform minds, which can transform behaviors, which can transform institutions.” Being passionate about life and living life like a dream by taking steps to turn your life situation around cannot be taken too lightly. Even though you may not know exactly what lies ahead, taking steps with a little dream can lead to a bigger dream.
The purpose of this book is for readers to take the journey to find something that will help cause a shift for improvement by turning things around in their daily lives. That should be part of the most significant task to find out and do better every day. Moreover, this book is written as words of advice and in the form of personal conversation that focuses on your well-being. Let’s take a ride to the other side of finding something that will cause a shift in discovering a new path.
CHAPTER 1
Follow Your Directions

I became who I am because of my past, but I’m not going to let the past take away my future. I’m always hopeful about the future and don’t always dwell on the past because I believe the past pulls people backward. Growing up, I attended public schools but made a promise to myself that I was going to enroll and graduate from a private high school when I passed the tenth grade. I wasn’t sure whether my dad could afford it, but I believed it was going to happen. Well, way before I got to the tenth grade, my dad, whom I was depending on to make my promise come through, passed away.
At that point, I realized that the promise I had made was to myself and not to my dad. Therefore, it was a promise I had to keep for myself. My plan B was to reach out to relatives I knew had the means to help fulfill my promise. Surprisingly, I didn’t get the help I was seeking to achieve a private high school education. However, I didn’t blame my relatives for not helping me; nor did I have any ill feelings about not getting help from them. I continued to be good and kept my relationships tight with everyone who refused to help.
Since plan A and plan B had failed, I had to go with plan C, which stands for courage to continue to have hope and to seek help from people I knew outside my relatives. The beginning of my promise coming true possibly came through the help of networking with people other than relatives, plus working a job after school. Eventually, my mom helped made that promise a reality in the end.
Although the day may be rocky, the future is too bright and full of promises to dwell on the past and let it rob me of my destiny. But who said life was going to be easy? That isn’t the future I behold. Life is a trend to behold, and I’m going to hang onto the promise life brings. It all starts with goals and proper planning to get to where I want to go.
What are your goals in life? Why haven’t you taken the steps to work on your dreams, or why did you stop following the purpose you have in mind? Is it the fear of managing something new? Well, the first entity you ever had the chance to manage was you, and I don’t think you had any fear when managing yourself for the first time. You did it subconsciously with no second thoughts.
When trying to do something, we don’t need fear. We have to live life and survive to live the life we want to live. We struggle when we live in a world of fear instead of faith. What we all need is a leap of faith. A leap of faith has power over failure. You never know the power of a leap of faith until you take it.
We start to manage our affairs as we begin to grow, and we learn along the way from the decisions we make as well as the training we get. Through it all, we fail some and win some, and at times, we win and win; but we always seem to be afraid to fail. I don’t doubt you have never been afraid to manage yourself. You probably don’t think about failing yourself when you go on living your life daily. But when it comes to doing something better, you get scared to act.
Why are people afraid to fail? There are many reasons. Some people are afraid to fail because of the costs that come with failures, such as the loss of income, security, status quo, and the fear of getting into the unknown. However, if anyone wants to obtain a set goal, the person cannot be afraid to fail. The fear of failure is the enemy of success. Therefore, if we want success or to do something well, we have to be willing to fail and succeed. We can learn from our failures to prepare better to grow in success. Better doesn’t always win, but having better perceptions tends to lead to winning.
In any case, if you consider failure the enemy of success, you need not be afraid of the enemy. Your duty is to learn and know the enemy. When you get to know how the enemy works, you will be able to bounce back whenever you take a beatdown from the rival. But because we are so afraid of failure, we fail to do something. Failure, like the enemy, usually tries to frighten a person from taking the steps to go after his or her goals in life. When the wolf comes in contact with sheep, the wolf may think the sheep a
