INTRODUCTION
Imagine a time in your journey in life when both success and failure become attributes to your mental attitudes. That is actually the reality of life and a state of realization. This hypothesis is coherent with a model called above the line and below the line thinking . This model was put forth by Carol in Walking the Talk as far as my search could find. I came across the model when I joined the International Coaching Institute in 2021 to have a certified attachment to a journey that had begun before its realization. I got more perceptive of how it applies to most areas of our everyday life. The unfolding of its application had what would shape so much of my perspective of how I respond to life.
When I was a very young girl growing up in Wau town of the Sudan, in the early 1990s we used to go the Catholic Mission in our neighborhood to get teaching for the Holy Communion. In one of the evening I was so pleased to meet one of my lovely cousins who happened to be at the age to beginning learning the catechism. In our childish play she flipped my dress. I was totally embarrassed. The options for me were either to quarrel with her for the embarrassment which would be a family fighting each other, or to just let that go since she is younger than me. I chose the second option and that made all the difference. A distance away from us was the son of the guard. The guard was nicknamed “Simba” after the region of his origin. He called out from where he was standing ‘coach.’ That actually felt like another embarrassment. At that time I was a total shy out girl, someone who was forced by a series of life events to be quite let alone coach. It never dawned on me that day that it was a coaching attitude to choose to be upbeat in a situation where a reaction could be a disaster.
