This book is the culmination of the lessons, thoughts, feelings, perspectives, and insights I took from a project I started in 2014 called Extraordinary Routines. It is a collection of different ways I have tried to improve my life and work, and it is me, the person I am, the people I was drawn to speaking to, and the lessons I learned.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

We can always do more, and there is always more to do. With this pile of undone things comes an undercurrent of guilt, anxiety, or shame.

#2

We’re running just to stand still, and we’re missing the point. We’re doing all this work to improve ourselves, only to go on judging ourselves for being imperfect. Yet such a pursuit is a fool’s errand.

#3

We often forget that we want the symphonies produced by the orchestra, not one flat note. When we try to optimise our days, we inevitably fall short. Instead, we can learn to accept ourselves as imperfect people and appreciate the messiness in our days.

#4

We often mistake doing things as being productive. But in reality, being productive is just one of many by-products of living well. We must shift the emphasis away from the things we accomplish and towards the things that feed us.

#5

We can’t always do the thing we set out to do, but we can still find something worthwhile in each day. We must dig up the stifling standards and instead plant something that is more fitting in a world that requires empathy, flexibility, and action.

#6

The most important way to get things done is to figure out what works for you, and then do it. Everyone stumbles, and nobody knows what they’re doing. We all try to keep up with each other, and adjust where necessary.

#7

I began to see a mosaic of people’s days, and I was able to see that each person’s mess looked different. I began to see shared feelings among my interviewees: they felt they weren’t doing enough, or felt uncertain if they’d ever get there.

#8

We are the only ones who live our days. We navigate our days how we learn to navigate our lives. It takes us a long time to figure out how to realize our wants, find our own recipe for a day, and be okay when that looks different to someone else’s.

#9

Creativity expands our days, and instead of restricting them to doing, it enlivens us to the ways we can do things differently. It responds to what arises in our day rather than prescribes it.

#10

The secret to living creatively is to live flexibly and openly, not sequentially. It means embracing creative tension because it is what makes the orchestra so captivating: varying notes, voices, sounds.

#11

We can apply the creative process to our lives by simply observing and shaping what’s in front of us, like a potter at a wheel. We can spend less time lamenting what we didn’t do, and more time appreciating what’s right in front of us.

#12

A day artist is the light-hearted counterpart to the strict optimiser of days. We should look to artists not just for advice on how to create something astounding, but also for the insights they have when it comes to dismantling the constraints of a productivity-obsessed culture.

#13

We can apply our human creativity to our days by experimenting with what we do. We can strive to experience everything a day has to offer, and reframe those experiences for ourselves. We can let more of life unfold and learn from the tangles.
