Foreword
My passion for writing continues with my third book. The first, The Advanced Power State was a self-mastery book, the second a business book on a new and innovative risk process. This third book goes back to the format so many said was an entertaining read in the first book.

To me a book has to be entertaining in the first instance, informative in the second and provide a thought-provoking opportunity.

The original style was to populate my thinking with little anecdotes and stories of how I came to believe, the knowledge and experience I convey in the book.

As always there are many factors that come into effect to create a book. Those such as the support from my family who I thank for putting up with me and the time taken in writing the book. Also thanks to my son, Aaron, for his diligence going through the book pointing out some changes and to Suzanne Daniels who carried out a full, detailed review of the manuscript before it was sent for final proofreading.

My hope is that, once again, you enjoy reading it and that you gain some real insight into this powerful topic.
Preface
What are the real benefits of being an effective questioner?

Over the last twenty-five years I have come to realise the power of questioning and how it helps to provide one of the main foundations for success. As children we pick up the skill quite naturally, if in an environment where others routinely use questioning. However, formal development in question forming or better questioning appears to be rare. In fact until coming to research and write this book I have never had any training or development in these areas.

It was recognising the importance of questioning, the shortfall of skill in this area and the benefits that can be achieved that has motivated me to write about it.

I have taken the subject back to a basic level and decided to build from there. This means you may find it a little easy at the start, however, it is a skill and like any other skill, practice makes perfect, although my son, at the age of eleven, corrected me by telling me that practice makes you better, not necessarily perfect.

This book will explain what questioning is, who does it and why and how it can be beneficial to do it better.

It will also provide tips, techniques and technical approaches, including a new, unique questioning framework that has been proven to work in almost any circumstance.

It will help with making you more effective at questioning. It will help you understand more about how and why others are asking questions. It will also provide you with additional skills for answering those questions more effectively.

In all honesty, it will probably point out some obvious things you already know, but have never really thought about, and will introduce you to some new ideas which can give substantial improvement to your life both at work and leisure.

The book will finish with a section on how “Advanced Power Questioning” fits in with other tools in The Advanced Power State (published Feb 2010 – Troubador.co.uk) to make you even more effective at what you do.

A key factor in all of my experience is confidence, and this book will help you build your own confidence through better questioning, and if used effectively will help you to improve your relationships, whether business or personal.

Questioning is invaluable in all walks of life and at all times.

What are the real benefits of being an effective questioner and following the Advanced Power Questioning Framework?
“The Advanced Power State”
There are two concepts to explore before we get into the exciting tips and techniques where questioning will change your life.

The first is something I call “worldview” and the second is the “Personal Knowledge Base”, PKB.
Worldview
I have always believed that each of us, as individuals, creates our own direction through our own individual eyes. I call this our worldview. It is one of the fundamental “keys to success”. Knowing you have a worldview, understanding your own worldview and its limitations is vital in your quest for success, but whenever you interact with someone understanding their worldview is also important.

Understanding where another person is coming from, what they think, and how they will respond to you will come from someone’s view of the world. Questioning is an effective way of soliciting a person’s worldview, of understanding their attitude to something and of delving into their beliefs.

If you understand someone’s worldview then you are also more likely to understand their approach to life and many different situations which gives you an advantage at leisure and at work.
Personal knowledge and its immense power
The knowledge we all have is critical to our success but knowledge is not just random information or data alone; it is clearly focused and useable information. I call this refined knowledge store our Personal Knowledge Base or PKB and it is introduced in my book The Advanced Power State (Troubador, 2010). It is used in all judgements, influences all actions and is also used to solve problems. It is a precursor to being successful and is something that can be built much faster than people think.

This Personal Knowledge Base gives you huge potential power:

• Social Power
• Emotional Power
• Political Power
• Action Power

The more knowledge you have the more potential power you will have. All you need to convert that potential power is the opportunity and talent to use it effectively. Questioning is one of the most effective ways of converting that potential power into opportunity whilst continuing to build the potential power further, and so read on.

I have used the words “potential power” twice in the preceding paragraph for good reason.
