About the Author
Introduction
Wow. You’ve done it! You have taken the next step in your life to make every day count. To ensure that every day you learn. That every day you achieve, no matter how big the achievement may be.
So, the first thing I want you to do is smile. Take a selfie of you smiling, look in the mirror and smile and watch you smile back or even just look up at the sky and look around and smile. Why am I asking you to smile? Well, it’s simple, you have just encountered your first lesson of Me. The book of multiple exercises to help you learn and achieve. The exercises that are in front of you will push your boundaries, so smiling throughout this and embracing the exercises will really help you to achieve.
PART 1: The bit about me
I’m not going to sit here and say I cannot believe this is happening because that’s not the truth. I knew this time would come. I just wasn’t sure how or when, but what I am about to share with you will be very self-explanatory.
The title of this book was known long before the content. I just had to make sure that I had plenty of relevant and measurable life experiences to justify my work, to ensure the content was true, perfect to share with you and to be confident that it would help and support you. The truth is, if this book only helps one person, I have succeeded in my goal, because that one person is one more than the person I have helped already … ME. So, if you get at least a 1 per cent gain from this book, tell people about it.
I have always looked for ways to improve myself, to learn, to adapt and to achieve all that I’ve ever wanted to achieve. Some of which I am still on my journey to accomplish. You will no doubt be on your own journey and challenging yourself and developing yourself too, so it gives me great pleasure in knowing that, in a small way, this book is part of that journey.
I wanted this book to be a simplified model of all the things I’ve read, seen, heard and done. A book that gives you a daily exercise for a period of 50 days, and something that you can repeat over and over again should you feel you need to.
We can look at some of the greatest businessmen and businesswomen in the world, some of the top performing athletes, musicians, scientists and so on and try to replicate what they have accomplished and try to be them. But the real truth is to just be you. Don’t be something or someone you are not. Be the person you are, be true to yourself and be the very best version of you. By doing that, you really are halfway to achieving anything you want in life. Me . provides you with daily exercises that will help you understand who you are, what you are about and to make you achieve things you never thought you could achieve.
It does not matter if you want to achieve improved health, wealth or happiness, Me . will help you to achieve any single one of your desires.
Just remember: Trust in the process, trust in yourself and work hard. I am a huge fan of positive thinking and mindset, but that in itself will not generate your desired results. It takes determination, hard work, resilience in times of need and allowing yourself to make mistakes. After all, it is how we learn and how we appreciate the correct way of being.
It’s not until writing Me . and trying to ascertain how and why people would pay attention to my methods of helping people learn and achieve, that I thought, ‘Do you know what, I’ve done a lot, achieved a lot and experienced a lot in my 35-odd years of living’. And I am hugely proud of that. I’m grateful for every experience. And I mean EVERY experience. For every person I’ve spoken to, listened to, for every book I’ve read, film I’ve watched. You name it, I could not be grateful enough.
I have a beautiful wife, two beautiful children, a lovely home and fantastic businesses and career. I feel like I am the wealthiest, healthiest and happiest human being on the planet. As I am getting older by age, I feel younger in body and mind.
My day-to-day job is a far cry from being an author although I am the author of my own life, for many years I worked in financial services helping people create their own dreams. Having served 15+ years within the financial services industry, I’ve grown to expand on my education and also, and more beneficially expanded on my knowledge of people and how we all function.
As a young boy I could not sit still. I had to be doing something, looking for the next big adventure, the next toy to play with and the next game of football to play. I was obsessed with football. A professional football player was all I wanted to be. I had the pleasure of representing Bristol City FC in the youth ranks for many years. Growing up I have been blessed to meet many wonderful people in the sporting industry who I look up to and idolise. I’ve had an incredibly loving and supportive upbringing from my parents and my amazing brother. I have always wanted to know a little about a lot. To know that if a conversation was being had, that I could slot myself into it and feel comfortable and confident. I loved being fit and healthy and being that ‘go-to’ person who people approached for help. And I’m immensely proud to say I have helped a lot of people throughout my life and I will continue doing that for the rest of my life.
I’ve also been through experiences that no one likes to go through, such as: losing very much-loved family members and friends, not achieving my ultimate goal as a young boy of becoming a professional footballer and being told ‘you just aren’t good enough’. And down to the depths of attempting to take my own life in my late twenties. I have experienced changes in jobs and explored career paths that I’m not proud of but was blessed to have learned from, changes in relationships with loved ones and friends. One thing I will always say is that I have always given 100 per cent in whatever I do. Sometimes, 100 per cent isn’t quite enough, but that’s OK. I have still gained something from each and every experience. Even with my darkest experience in the attempted suicide, it taught me to talk, to live, to love and to enjoy every day. But also, to help others. And that is a huge passion of mine.
Let’s now get straight to the point, because it’s what I promised myself when creating Me . Will this book benefit you? Yes, 100 per cent yes. Whether you think it will or not, it will help you. So, plant that beautiful seed in your mind. Have you done that? Great! Now take a selfie, look in the mirror or look around you and smile again. This time, when you smile, whatever emotion you feel, let it out. Cry if you need to, laugh, scream with joy, jump, beat your chest. Whatever you feel you need to do in this moment. Do it.
I will never forget the day an old supervisor of mine said to me, ‘Ryan, I don’t think you realise how influential you are, people pay attention to you’. If ever I’ve had a compliment, that has to be up there with the best of them. So, I’m going to use that compliment and run with it. Whether it be to help people get into physically better shape, to eat better, learn to love, to be happy, to sell something or even to believe in themselves, I’ve always been honest, helpful and constructive and done my best to help people. I know that every day, I have done something, achieved something and now I want to share this with you.
PART 2:
How the Mind Excellence exercise works
Me . is about me . Meaning, You. Meaning Mind Excellence to help you achieve the best you. It holds a dual meaning.
Today and for the next 50 days’ worth of exercises, you will experience something new every day. Make the most of all your experiences. Share your experiences, findings and feelings with others. This will help you reflect on what you are going through. Communication is such a fantastic healer. It saves us from combusting with informative and emotional overload.
Me . cannot be anything more than a book, if you don’t give it trust, give it effort and to believe in the outcome, whatever your aspiration or goal may be. AND, to echo my previous comments, nothing and I repeat nothing comes to you in life without putting the graft in. But Ryan, you said effort. Yes, I did. But graft is different. Graft is about really digging deep at those times when you may not believe or may not want to do it. That is graft. Things may not always go to plan, life does that to us. Learn to accept that and keep going, keep moving forward with the exercises planned. The biggest achievement come from the smallest of changes.
WHY 50 DAYS?
I’m not entirely sold by the 21, 30 day or 90 day variations to change a habit, so I thought, I’m doing it over 50 days. So, 50 per cent of your effort to achieve something is from the initial thought, ‘right, I need to do something about this’. So, combine that 50 per cent effort to instigate a change with the 50 days of y
