Foreword
Stress is ever present in the struggle to overcome infertility. As a practicing reproductive endocrinologist, I have first-hand knowledge of the havoc it can cause in a patient’s life.
Multitasking is an art that these patients have mastered. In addition to the demands of their personal and professional lives, they also have to juggle their medical treatments and procedures.
As part of infertility treatment, many patients are referred for counseling and supportive therapies including holistic health procedures such as acupuncture. This workbook is an effective tool to be used by the reader to empower and prepare herself to cope with the demanding infertility experience.
Barbara Blitzer has laid out each chapter in an easy-to-understand format, recognizing that the patient has to lead a normal life despite the demands of the treatment regimens. Understanding the process is important in managing stress and dealing with the anxiety generated by the unknown. The exercises at the end of each section allow the reader to work through several steps in allaying anxiety and taking control of stress.
Recognizing stressors is the first step in any program designed to alleviate stress. This well-researched book helps identify these stressors and then describes individual coping mechanisms.
This book explains in clear language the evaluation and treatment of the frequent causes of infertility. Readers will gain a better understanding of why they have had difficulty becoming pregnant and what options are available to them.
The workbook is interactive and well organized. It offers a sensitive, thoughtful, and pragmatic approach to helping patients become self-reliant and less stressed. It is a book that will provide the reader with “counseling at her fingertips.”
I have no doubt that readers will come to rely on this workbook as a valuable resource and use it to nurture themselves as they travel the path ahead.

Introduction
If you’re reading this book, chances are you are experiencing anxiety regarding your fertility. You may be, like one in every eight couples, challenged by a period of infertility. You may be worrying about whether you will be able to conceive, even if you have tried for only a short time. You may be worrying about a bleak diagnosis you’ve just received or about the effectiveness of the treatment you are currently undergoing. Whatever your situation, you are concerned with enhancing your chance of a successful pregnancy. Wherever you are on your journey, this book is for you.
In my many years of working with women and couples, I have found that infertility (or even the worry and anxiety about possible infertility) can become so invasive that it becomes difficult to focus on other things, to maintain a positive outlook, to make plans, or to make decisions. I have also learned t
