Don’t Raise Your Children, Raise Yourself
By- Dr. Swati Lodha
“This is a well-written and easy to read book with anecdotal association of astrology and Indian mythology to modern times. A must-read for millennial. My wife and I never received any formal lessons or training on parenting; it came naturally to us. We were new parent in a different land–America and were just starting on our individual careers.
Looking back, I now realize how beneficial it would have been if we had the child rearing responsibilities so thoughtfully compiled by Dr. Swati Lodha in this book.
I have immensely enjoyed reading this book and now that I am a grandfather I have asked my kids to read this book as they raise their own children.”
Dwarka Taparia, Senior Solutions Architect, Oracle Corporation/Tekelec, Chicago

“This volume is an astounding guide for any parent. Sometimes we have lot of questions on how to react in this particular situation and while I was reading each chapter lot of my questions were answered. I could relate to lot of situations mentioned in this book.
I like the way the book has connected mythological stories to current situations and their reflections.”
Namrata Mathur, Mother of Two, Mumbai

“A well-written parenting guide for the modern generation, this is an elegant way to help connect with our mythology and stories that we heard as children. This book is an interesting way to elucidate the importance of parenting and the responsibilities that come with bringing a child into this world. Simple language and the footnotes help the reader stay connected. This is a very clever and captivating way to encourage new parents.”

“The book talks about the subtle and the stark changes that has redefined parent-child equation over the years. Written in simple language the book very candidly describes the role of recent developments such as, technological advancement, globalization, easy availability of money and exposure through television and internet.
Additional features such as, quotes, footnotes, and different types of questions at the end of every chapter only grab the attention but will also provoke reader’s thought process. As parents, it will help you reflect on your true feelings, leading to an improved relationship with your children.”
Vivek Mehrotra, Dean – Flipkart University at Flipkart, Bengaluru

“The book is a wonderful weave of stories from the Hindu mythology as gotten by the author in her exploration of the Moon’s (Chandra’s) movement across the 27 Nakshatras and its influence on life, as compared to the issues experienced by a parent in various stages pf parenthood. The book is full of real life issues faced by the author and her mentees and really touched me and left me with a new expanded view of life.”
Sandeep Kapur, Director & Chief Strategy Officer, V3Solutions, Mumbai

“As you go through this book, it becomes clear that strong convictions of the author are coming not only from being a very involved parent but also from her role as an educationist, guide and mentor for children spanning almost an entire generation. The framework is not only interesting but also easy to connect with, for the Indian parent as it draws from Indian mythology and astronomy, the ‘satva’ (essence, truth) for the modern day parenting. While some of the lessons are universal and as easily applicable to other aspects of life, where the book succeeds is that it brings parenting itself into focus.”
Pradeep Chhajerh, Chief Operating Officer, Treves Banswara Pvt Ltd, Mumbai

Acknowledgement
W hen a piece of writing takes a long time on the writing table, the list of people and incidents contributing to it gets longer.
I started writing this book in my head two decades ago when I started meeting children of various sizes and temperaments through my organisation SWASH. I thank all those amazing children and their wonderful parents who allowed me a peek into their lives that lead to many transforming truths.
I thank the adolescents and management students whom I have mentored in the last two decades. Their views and dynamic behaviour, heard and observed, have shaped up many threads of thoughts sewn in this book.
My parents and my daughter have been the closest witnesses of my journey with this book. I can never thank them enough.
I must thank Shailesh, my husband for never trying to find out what I am writing.
Special thanks to Meera Warrier who gave valuable inputs to enhance the appeal of the book.
I genuinely wish to thank plenty of publishers who liked the book but didn’t find the idea of Parenting saleable. These experiences further strengthened my resolve to work incessantly in the field of Parenting & Leadership.
A deep appreciation for Team StoryMirror whose entrepreneurial and innovative ways point towards the changing dynamic of the publishing industry. Your involvement and enthusiasm set you apart from the rest.
Introduction
I n this option-rich, distractions filled world, it is quite a challenge to be an effective parent. After all, parenting doesn’t come with an owner’s manual. It’s easy to feel inadequate and sometimes helpless as a parent when you are not sure about your actions as parents.
We prepare for every test, every interview. Don’t we need to prepare as a parent—a role that we play for the longest time in our lives?
I wrote this book because I believe it will solve these problems at three levels.
First, it will present an objective picture of our children’s world today, an assessment of our parenting style and what parenting is.
Second, it will give you 10 tools to improve your ability to parent.
Third, it will give you 25 lessons to be inculcated strategically in your children so that they grow into happy, confident and responsible adults.
In my 18 years of journey as a life transformation coach, I have mentored thousands of children, adolescents and youth as well as professionals–parents through my organisation SWASH founded in Rajasthan, India.
Doubling up as the Director of a B-School for a decade, I have been actively involved with young future managers and leaders. Interacting with these students make me understand what shapes them up—their upbringing, their social interactions and impact of technology in their lives.
My sixteen-year-old daughter has given me the first-hand experience of being a parent and I have gone through the daily dose of dilemmas and dreams as a parent.
In the last five years, I have interacted with more than five hundred parents to understand their views, beliefs and action plan with reference to parenting.
My workshops on parenting have already benefited parents of children at different age junctures, even would-be-parents. The tools and principles mentioned in this book help them to improve their competencies as parents as well as empower the children to be happy, confident and responsible.
A working mom in Mumbai says, “I identified with different life stories as if they have been my life experiences at some point of time. It helps me to refocus on me as a parent, fixing myself up before trying to improve my children.”
I promise that the book will open your eyes towards an understanding that YOU need to change as a parent before your children need to improve.
It will empower you to make your and your children’s lives more fulfilling and happy. It will ensure a better equation between parent and children.
My book will empower you to raise happy kids loved by themselves, confident kids respected by the world, responsible kids trusted by family, community and the world.
Also, it will guide you to be a parent who is patient, balanced and disciplined.
Don’t waste this opportunity thinking that you are a hands on parent who knows better about his/her kids. Don’t think that parenting is an automatically acquired skill and cannot be taught. Learn as a parent to create long lasting results for yourselves and your children.
Make each day count, make each interaction precious, and make each lesson valuable by following this inspirational guide.
This book is unique as it offers inspiration from Indian mythology for parents. Readers will find a new concept in every chapter, put forward by an interesting dream that links parental philosophy of a chapter with characteristics of a particular Nakshatra.
Moon is the brightest and the fastest moving heavenly body. Daily movement of the Moon has divided the zodiac into 27 asterisms or Nakshatras. The Moon travels the width of a Nakshatra in about one day.
According to Vedic astrology, these 27 Nakshatras are Lunar mansions. These are mansions of the Moon as Moon resides in each of these constellations for one day in each month. Hindu mythology believes that celestial architect Daksha had 27 daughters whom he got married to Chandra and each one of them lived in one Nakshatra spending one night with moon every month.
Read the interesting dreams and learn the parenting philosophy flowing out of it. Each dream will open a new understanding of parenting for you to use in your daily life.
My Story
I wanted to share with you three personal reasons as to why I’m writing this book.
The first reason would be my strong parental instinct that has kept thousands of children in its fold. In my 15–year journey as a life transformation coach, I have mentored children, adolescents and youth who attend the annual workshops conducted at SWASH, an organization that I founded in Jodhpur, India. Additionally, I’ve had i
