Description

This informative book is a step-by-step guide for the aging, providing proactive and reactive tools to care for the brain and memory.

The brain is an essential organ and its health will make a huge difference in our quality of life as we age. The good news is that science has now proven that we are able to grow and increase our mental abilities if we exercise our mind on a consistent basis. So how do we gauge the health of our brain and memory and then focus on intentionally caring for both?

In a comprehensive guide that reminds those of any age to live fully, Kimberly Mitchell shares her knowledge as a seasoned educator, memory consultant, and creator of the Brain Booster class to provide a realistic, daily recipe for maintaining and improving brain and memory health. While encouraging readers to take action immediately, Mitchell presents valuable tips for seniors and retirees to purposely stay PRIMED every day.

Don’t Forget, You’re Still Alive is a straight forward, easy to read, fun approach to achieving optimal brain health.

FOREWORD
As I write about Kimberly Mitchell, a woman I’ve been the closest kind of friend with for 20 years, I know, reader, that you probably won’t believe what I tell you. Then why would I waste my very valuable time, as well as yours, writing a foreword that reads like a myth? I’m writing because I need you, oh blessed finder of this book, to understand the spirit from whom these writings derive.
I have never, and I mean never , met a person like Kimberly Mitchell. She has the most helpful, loving spirit I’ve ever encountered, and baby, I’ve traveled in this lifetime. I’ve met bishops, beggars, billionaires, and a gaggle of in-betweens. Mitchell, as I call her, has the kind of light that calms inner oceans and lifts seemingly insurmountable mountains. She’s a unicorn. I’ve watched her pour love into every room she enters, whether she’s cooking for somebody or tutoring another (working flawlessly at both); whether she’s helping me give birth to my wonderful somebody or planting flowers for someone else or if she’s writing the book your body is activated by, this beautiful, ever-so-kind, intelligent woman will bring you joy.
Kimberly Mitchell wants you to succeed. She wants you to live fully. She wants you continually blossoming, ever blooming. I thank Jehovah for Kimberly Mitchell’s presence in my life and in yours. Abundant blessings on your journey, reader. Writing this sincere truth about my inspiring friend has been my honor.
Love and Light,

INTRODUCTION
I was moved to research memory and brain health when one of my close aunts began to show signs of neurological decline. She was the best cook on my paternal side, and there was nothing more special to her than family gatherings. I never saw her without a smile. I can still hear her laughing. The family began to notice some of her best recipes tasting slightly off, and she would mention forgetting small things, like one digit in a phone number she typically knew without flaw. Yes, the one or two missing ingredients, the random number disappearing from her mind, and the frequent repetition of stories or statements were all initial signs of memory loss.
Her decline was slow, but it was surely taking place. It was heart-wrenching to watch. Not only did her personal suffering take a toll on me, but watching my uncle and cousins gradually see her memories, their memories, fade away was a sort of torture. After all, our memories are the stories that make our older years so beautiful. All of our experiences, good and not so good, equal up to who we are continuously becoming. How traumatic it must be to mix up and delete the files in our mind that provide us our very essence. Memory loss is the ultimate pilferer, a canny swindler of oneself. Victims of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are left helpless and oftentimes lost. My aunt spent intentional time and energy creating a life worth remembering. These illnesses stole from her like a thief in the night. That’s when I felt the need to take a rooted stance. But how?
Living on the other side of the country, away from most of my family, forced me to take action through anticipating strangers. The universe started revealing people and places that needed realistic information about protecting the aging mind. I began to research and study brain and memory health. Any and everything I could read, I read. Any studies I was privy to, I also read. Any seminars and lectures I could attend, I did. Then, out of the blue, I got a call from an agency I was independently tutoring children through to cover for another tutor. The assignment was teaching memory care at three different senior facilities for six weeks. I didn’t hesitate to accept.
Just a week in, I was fully invested in becoming a healthy resource for the senior community. My peppy personality and positive outlook on life were attributes that made my audiences loosen up and listen. I felt I had my aunt in a new form. After all, I had the loving relatives of so many people in my care. Call it divine intervention, purpose, or whatever you choose; I felt a mission was placed in front of me and I was extremely excited to meet the chall enge.
In 2014, I developed and birthed “Brain Booster Class with Kimberly . ” This class lasts an hour, twice a month. I teach individuals privately and in group settings at senior residences and facilities. Attendees show up with a notebook, pen, and some level of cerebral curiosity. I show up with structured, beneficial information and oodles of my bouncy, bubbly energy. Week after week, month after month, year after year, they still show up. I’m so very proud of this fact; it proves that people are taking action to improve their brain he alth .
Teaching memory care through my Brain Booster class has been one of the most rewarding ventures of my life. Selfishly, I admit I gain just as much as I give. I now consider the clients I serve as extended family. My impact on the senior community has filled me with gratitude.
