1 - Decide To Be Happy
We’re going to start with perhaps the most difficult step of all - you have to want to be happy. Crazy as it sounds at first, when you look at this in more detail everything becomes clear. You see, the biggest barrier to happiness is yourself; you are the only one who has the power to change your state of mind and it is a symptom of the human condition that one often changes it for the worst.
So you must actually decide that happiness is your goal , and whatever comes in your way you can cope with it. No-one, not even the most content human being on the planet doesn’t have to deal with problems on a daily basis. The key to becoming a happy person is how you react when this happens.
The exercise for this chapter is simple to describe but sometimes can be hard to do. The moment you wake up tomorrow, say this to yourself:
“Today is going to be a happy day. I’m going to feel good about myself, and no matter what curveballs get thrown at me I will smile my way through them.”
Of course, the toughest thing about this step is trusting in what you say. But it is not the statement that you have to believe in... it is yourself! It is in your power to make this true; your happiness - as you will see throughout this book - comes from within. You need to be strong, and repeating this thought every day is going to be the key to improving your state of mind.



2 - Don’t Fret About Your Looks
For many people, their biggest worry (and therefore their biggest barrier to happiness) is what they see when they look in the mirror. You are not going to let this problem affect you.
Let’s start with a reality check. Both men and women suffer from self-image issues. Are you worried you don’t look like those models in magazines? Those singers in music videos? Are you concerned that you haven’t got unblemished skin, breasts that seem to defy gravity or a perfectly-defined six pack?
