Description

The Toilet Book attempts to shed light on a topic that most people are too embarrassed to discuss, bowel movements and urination. The book bridges the gap between going to the restroom and good health. It describes all the different colors, smells, looks, and shapes they may see after using the restroom. The book also describes exactly what each color, smell, shape, look, etc. means as it relates to human health. The Toilet Book gives readers information what type of behavior causes unhealthy urinary and digestive systems. It also provides easy steps to take towards improving both systems. Since the topic of discussion can be a bit intimidating or embarrassing to some, the book attempts as much humor as possible. The chapter titles are creative and there is just the right mix of playfulness mixed in with a topic that is more serious than some tend to realize. Overall, after a reader has finished this book they should have an understanding of how things we eat and drink get from plates and cups all the way to the toilet. We should also understand that what shows up in the toilet after using the restroom can tell all lot about one's health. Lastly, they will also understand how the toilet and using the rest room is related to weight loss, cancer, and high cholesterol. The Toilet Book's sole purpose is to remove the embarrassment behind discussing words like bowel movement, defecation, feces, poop, pee, urination, #1 and #2 while educating in a fun way at the same time. I hope readers will gain insight on their current health behavior and make changes if needed to improve their overall health.

Preface

My entire professional career has been spent helping others lose weight, increase their physical fitness, train for sporting events, improve their eating habits and generally improve their overall health. During that time most of my discussions with clients, regarding their specific health goals, revolved around only a few topics. Most of the time we would discuss how their diet should change or the type of exercise program they should participate in. Being a trained health professional, I knew that diet and exercise were important, but were not the only things that played a role in someone’s health. As a result, I had to force clients to discuss topics like stress levels, amount and quality of sleep, mental wellness, and spiritual wellness. More often than not, they were OK with discussing said topics. However, whenever I would ask a client about their urination habits or even a specific question like “how many bowel movements do you have daily”, clients would respond in all type of evasive ways. Some would laugh to escape answering; others would ask me the same question in avoidance. Some clients appeared so uncomfortable that I thought they might request legal counsel. Believe it or not, your trips to the toilet matter. I wrote this book to explain that discussing your toilet trips should not be embarrassing and that they can provide valuable information about your health. This book is for all types of people. It’s for the health nuts like me who like to know everything about human health. It’s for the people with health concerns like obesity, high cholesterol or diabetes who need one more piece of information to help get them over the unhealthy hump. It’s even for those of you who are still embarrassed by the word urination or the phrase bowel movement. By the time you are finished reading you should have a clear picture of all things associated with sitting on and standing in front of a toilet. I hope that this book helps you to understand how normal going to the restroom is and how it can convey aspects of your health. Additionally, I tried to keep it humorous while informative, so hopefully you’ll have a giggle or two as well.
Acknowledgements

Throughout all the time put into completing this book my life went through many changes. I had my first child, conceived another one, all while working my regular full-time job. To say it came together with some challenges would be an understatement. Many times I had to stay up late or wake up early just to get some time to write. Since this was the first (of many I hope) book I had ever written there were plenty of times that I wanted quit or thought why am I even writing this. Thankfully though, there were people in my life that would say or do the right thing at precisely the right time to keep me going. It also didn’t hurt that in my regular full-time work, I dealt with people on a daily basis who had questions about how to improve their health. At least once per week I would have a conversation with a client at work which provoked thought about the subject matter of this book. Therefore, I want to acknowledge the people who contributed to the completion of this book whether they knew it or not.
First I want to mention my only sibling. She was the first person on earth to read the book from start to finish in its infancy. She was also the first person to tell me the parts that were terrible and the parts that were not so terrible. There were times were I assumed I had done everything needed to complete this book and she would ask “did you do this” or “did you do that” and I would begrudgingly go back to the drawing board on certain topics. But it was all for the best. To further explain her contributions to this book I only need to mention the its cover. It was designed by her.
Next up is a family member who I am sure would not expect to be listed in an acknowledgement section of my book. My cousin Cynthia was also allowed “exclusive access” to my book when I completed the first draft. She said after reading the first draft that she learned so much about the body’s natural processes that take place at and around the toilet. What makes her so important to this book is what she told me at a family gathering. Cynthia told me that after reading my first draft, she regular discusses her “bathroom behavior” with her doctor and frequently takes a personal account of what’s in her toilet. This change in behavior is exactly what I hope will happen to everyone who reads this book.
Stacy was a personal training client of mine when she learned I was writing this book. Some of her job-related skills included writing and editing and at some point, the topic of her taking a look at my book came up. She then took time out of her own busy schedule to read every word of my book in order to edit it and provide positive and negative feedback. At first I wasn’t sure why she offered to read my book but as it turns out, she actually likes editing, imagine that. After going through her suggestions I can honestly say that I agreed with 85% of them and many of her thoughts and words are in this book.
Of course I have to mention my parents. They have always encouraged me to go after anything I wanted to achieve and more importantly, without their work back in 80s, I wouldn’t be here. My father is actually the one who suggested that I even put all of this together in a book. I can’t remember exactly how it happened but at some point we had a conversation about this topic and he mentioned that maybe I should put my thoughts in a book. Not to make my mother feel left out, there is something else I am working on and you were the inspiration for that work.
Last and least is my wife. Ooops, I meant to say last but not least. Seriously though, she has helped me out so much just by being her. On the days were she walks in the door and I have to apologize for not cooking dinner as promised because I got stuck in front of the computer, she understood. On the days when I promised I would give our daughter a bath, but didn’t, she understood. There were even days where I had to cancel nights out on the town with her just to finish working on parts of this book. Thankfully though, she didn’t get too upset, at least not every time. So thank you darling, you are truly the best.
