Iodine is added to foods and supplements because it has many useful properties. It can form gels that bind with water, and it is hard to control during the production cycle.

#6

The Thyroid Reset Diet helps your thyroid recover by removing high-iodine foods from your diet, and it recommends that you test your thyroid regularly after starting the diet.

#7

The Thyroid Reset Diet has a simple system of Green Light, Yellow Light, and Red Light foods that you can eat. You start with the Reset phase, during which you can eat any Green Light food while avoiding all Yellow Light and Red Light foods. The reset provides just under 100 mcg of iodine daily.

#8

The human thyroid is a marvel that is constantly renewing itself and growing new cells. As the conditions that gave rise to the disease are no longer present, the new cells work better.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The thyroid is a small lump of tissue in the neck that makes thyroid hormones. The sole purpose of these hormones is to relay signals from one part of the body to another. When the thyroid is healthy, you should not be able to see or feel it.

#2

The main thyroid hormone is called T4, or levothyroxine. It is a thyroid protein with four iodine atoms stuck to it. The thyroid also makes T3, or triiodothyronine, which has one fewer iodine atom.

#3

The first T is for the thyroid stimulating hormone, which is the signal from the pituitary gland to the thyroid. The less active the thyroid is, the more TSH is released by the pituitary gland.

#4

The thyroid gland is made up of thyroid cells, and each cell lives for only a few months. The balance between new cell growth and old cell death needs to be perfect for the thyroid to stay the same size. If not in balance, the thyroid enlarges, shrinks, or gets lumpy.

#5

Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid is overstimulated, and it is treated with urgent medical treatment. It is not as amenable to lifestyle treatment only, and it is more likely to reverse with appropriate medical treatment than hypothyroidism.

#6

Thyroid disease is defined as an elevated TSH score, a low T4 score, and the presence of classic hypothyroid symptoms. Most doctors consider a TSH elevated when it is above 4. 5 IU/mL.

#7

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the thyroid. If the attack is significant enough, the thyroid sustains too much damage to make as much hormone as the body needs.

#8

Thyroid disease causes such distinct and widespread symptoms because the thyroid hormones play a critical role in so many of the body’s processes. The symptoms of altered metabolism, poor tissue repair, irregular nerve impulses, and poor hormone regulation are just a few of the symptoms caused by thyroid disease.

#9

The main symptoms of thyroid disease are weight gain, fatigue, and palpitations. However, these symptoms can be caused by either a too-high or too-low level of thyroid hormones.
Insights from Chapter 3

#1

The main driver of thyroid disease is the consumption of the wrong amount of iodine. Too little iodine, too much iodine, or fluctuations in iodine intake can all be culprits.
