Dear Reader:
Welcome to New Harbinger Publications. New Harbinger is dedicated to publishing books based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and its application to specific areas. New Harbinger has a long-standing reputation as a publisher of quality, well-researched books for general and professional audiences.
This book, The Diabetes Lifestyle Book , is an intimately practical and user-friendly guide for those struggling with diabetes and their loved ones. Diabetes, as you may know, is a serious and quite scary medical condition. Nobody asks for it, yet it is there anyway. But it’s not a death sentence either. Diabetes is a condition that can be managed, and in many ways must be managed. The complications of unchecked diabetes can do serious damage to you. Those complications can even cut your life short needlessly.
The authors of The Diabetes Lifestyle Book draw on the latest research and practical know-how to help you more effectively manage your diabetes (and the barriers that get in the way of that management) with an eye on the prize—helping you live better even with your diabetes. Put another way, this book will help you put diabetes management in its proper context as one part of your life, not the very fabric of who you are.
As you move through the book, you’ll learn a number of things. The authors will teach you a bit about diabetes, its complications, and what we know about them. The book, though, is bigger than that. It is about you taking care of yourself so that you can make the most of your one precious life. To get there, the authors will help you take stock of what matters to you—your values.
You’ll also have a chance to take a good look at the barriers that seem to be getting in the way of you taking care of your diabetes. If you’re like many people with diabetes, we think you’ll find that many of the barriers are self-inflicted, products of what your mind and body are telling you—that it’s too much, too difficult, too painful, or that nothing will change, so why bother. On top of that, you have legitimate feelings like resentment, guilt, shame, anxiety, sadness, a sense of loss, and even anger. These feelings can leave you feeling hopeless, worn out, and alone.
These barriers are important for one simple reason: they can keep you from taking care of yourself. If you don’t attend to them, then you will suffer. And, if you suffer some of the serious medical complications that come along with unchecked diabetes, you won’t be able to do what you most care about. In short, when your health suffers needlessly, your life will tend to shrink needlessly. The authors teach us that it doesn’t have to be this way. There is a way out.
If you read this book and do the exercises, you stand a great chance of getting your diabetes under control. And, you will learn a powerful set of skills and strategies that will help you keep your health and your life on track in directions you want to go. Here, too, you’ll learn how to move with unpleasant barriers rather than having to defeat them in order to create the life that you so desperately want to live. The authors will show you how to have a vital life, even with diabetes, by teaching you how to balance acceptance and change. These ideas are not fluff. There is a growing body of research showing that ACT skills and strategies benefit people just like you, as well as those with other serious medical and psychological problems such as multiple sclerosis, cancer, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and even schizophrenia, one of the more serious and hard-to-treat psychological conditions that we know of.
Why ACT works as well as it does across the gamut of human suffering is being worked out as we speak, but we think it has to do with this: the skills help people get unstuck and moving in ways that are vital, meaningful, and dignified without first having to win the war with unpleasant thoughts, memories, and physical sensations. ACT is not a panacea or cure for your diabetes, but it will help you to put your time and energy into things that you can control and need to control. In short, it will help you live better.
We encourage you to put reading this book on your “take-care-of-yourself to-do list” each day. Work with the material and let it work for you. We know that you didn’t ask for diabetes, but we do know this much—you can do something about it. You are much bigger than your diabetes.
We know that some of what you read will be challenging, but the potential payoff is great. We hope that you allow the material in this book to help you take important steps toward a healthier, fuller, and more vital life. Remember that you can take control of your diabetes instead of letting your diabetes control you. This book will show you the way.
As part of New Harbinger’s commitment to publishing sound, scientific, clinically based research, Steven C. Hayes, Ph.D., Georg Eifert, Ph.D., and John Forsyth, Ph.D., oversee all prospective ACT books for the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Series. New Harbinger is at the forefront of publishing books that make ACT skills available to general and professional audiences.
As ACT Series editors, we review all ACT books published by New Harbinger, comment on proposals and offer guidance as needed, and use a gentle hand in making suggestions regarding content, depth, and scope of each book. We strive to ensure that any unsubstantiated claim or claims that are clearly ACT inconsistent are flagged for the authors so they can revise these sections to ensure that the work meets our criteria (see below) and that all of the material presented is true to ACT’s roots (not passing off other models and methods as ACT).
Books in the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Series: Have an adequate database. Those meant for the public will have at least one reasonably well-done and successful randomized trial showing that the methods are helpful. Are theoretically coherent: they will fit with the ACT model and underlying behavioral principles as they have evolved at the time of writing. Refrain from making excessive claims and orient the reader toward unresolved empirical issues. Do not overlap needlessly with existing volumes. Avoid jargon and the needless creation of new terms or unnecessary entanglement with proprietary methods. Keep the focus always on what is good for the reader. Support the further development of the field. Provide information in a way that is of practical use to readers.
These guidelines reflect the values of the broader ACT community. You’ll see all of them packed into this book. They are meant to guard against unsubstantiated claims, and to ensure that you get something that can truly be helpful to you. Now, it’s time for you to take a look and find out for yourself.
Sincerely,
John Forsyth, Ph.D.
Steven C. Hayes, Ph.D.
