IN THE INFINITY OF LIFE WHERE I AM, ALL IS PERFECT, WHOLE AND COMPLETE, AND YET LIFE IS EVER CHANGING. LIFE IS NEVER STUCK OR STATIC OR STALE, FOR EACH MOMENT IS EVER NEW AND FRESH. I REJOICE IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT I HAVE THE POWER OF MY OWN MIND TO USE IN ANY WAY I CHOOSE. EVERY MOMENT OF LIFE IS A NEW BEGINNING AS WE MOVE FROM THE OLD. THIS MOMENT IS A NEW POINT OF BEGINNING FOR ME RIGHT HERE AND RIGHT NOW. ALL IS WELL IN MY WORLD.
-LOUISE HAY, You Can Heal Your Life
Like many people, I have been a seeker of the feel-good. If there was a new fad diet, I was on top of it. I was the overachiever, the perfectionist. Rules felt good. Checklists, to-do lists, and plans outlining my every step kept me safe. But the journey was exhausting. And the destination? Happiness? A glowing vision of health? What was I planning for, really?
Diet after diet, plan after plan, I would follow each outside influence, only to further weaken my intuition at every step. How dare I presume to know what was good for me, when seemingly endless others knew better? The result: I adopted a misconceived notion that, left to my own devices, I was doomed to fail. In my mind, without the discipline of a diet, I would go wild and binge, or forbid myself to eat anything at all. I had numbed myself to my own intuition. Again, like many people, I was taught to distrust that quiet, knowing inner voice that says, I got you. I ll take care of you. You are safe, you are loved, you are nourished.
It took hitting rock bottom-I ll get to that later-for me to realize I needed a change. That change began simply, with relearning to listen to that quiet voice. And the more I listened, the louder that voice-my own intuition-became. And the more I listened to my body, the better I felt and the more comfortable in my own skin I was.
This book is for anyone who has lost their way around how to nourish their body, having lost trust in their own intuition. In this book I want to help you restore the balance between your body and your spirit, a harmony we were all born with. If you have lost your North Star around food, around the connection between your soul and your body, this book is for you. If you yearn to trust your body and the signals it gives you, this book is for you. If you are looking to cut through the noise of wellness fads and diets, this book is for you. If you long to reclaim peace with your body, this book is for you. If you have already made peace with your body and are looking for more inspiration, for recipes to help get you creative in the kitchen, this book is for you.
I hope this book inspires you to replace diets with approachable, delicious, healing meals and principles that put power back into your own hands. I hope it helps you to rediscover your joy and helps you learn to love to eat again, and to fill your body with abundant, healthful foods. This is the book I needed when I was still searching for answers-a place where I could feel held and gently guided, rather than criticized or forced.
There is tremendous comfort in knowing we can take back power in nourishing ourselves. In the following pages I will explore two philosophies that helped me greatly in my healing journey-intuitive eating and food combining. Intuitive eating is essential, because if we don t first become aware of, and able to tap into, our own intuition about nourishing ourselves, any new way of eating will be just another diet or compulsion. Instead, once we learn to eat intuitively-to trust our bodies first and foremost-then we can use food combining, a method that involves pairing certain types of foods together and consciously not pairing others, as a tool to help our bodies feel the best they can.
The recipes included in this book follow a plant-based philosophy, integrating whole, natural foods into a food-combining framework. They aim to maximize digestion and energy-and raise your vibration energetically. When we eat mostly unfussed foods in a way so as not to interfere with our bodies natural ability to regenerate and detox, we strengthen our intuition. How? When we feel better, we are naturally guided to more things that make us feel good. When we heal imbalances, like lethargy, brain fog, indigestion, and bloating simply by shifting the way we eat, and when we allow our bodies to thrive naturally and easily, life changes. Miracles happen. Joy happens. Synchronicity happens. This is when the world opens up. We just need to get out of our own way.
I have rediscovered the joy in nourishing myself, which has not only helped me personally thrive but has also become a way for me to show love both to those close to me and to those beyond, through an online community that continues to grow and inspire. Armed with a set of principles that I now instinctively follow daily, I enjoy an unprecedented freedom with all foods. I feel so grateful to be able to share with you all that I have learned on my journey. I hope this book will serve as a guide and a friend in helping you bring harmony back to your body and soul.
With love, Nicole
HOW I GOT HERE
Let the record show I took all the blows And did it my way
- My Way, lyrics by PAUL ANKA
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME
Food and I go way back. Growing up with a father who had type 2 diabetes, I was always aware of how eating directly affected your health. Each morning, I would watch him meticulously measure half a cup of Grape-Nuts cereal and half a cup of skim milk, which he would have with half a grapefruit. This ritual not only comforted me but taught me lessons-positive and negative-about restraint and consistency. There were Sugarless Wednesdays at my preschool filled with ants on a log (aka celery sticks with Skippy peanut butter and raisins), seaweed and rice kimbap rolls made lovingly by my Korean grandmother when I visited her in Seoul, and the occasional pastrami and rye jaunt to the Carnegie Deli with Dad. ( I m being bad, he would grin as he took a big juicy bite of his towering sandwich.) Healthy or not, those were joyful memories. But it wasn t always a picture-perfect relationship with food. Something happened along the way so that I disconnected from that joy and began to fear food.
The Seeds of Fear
My first memory of detouring away from love and into fear (a phrase I learned from my mentor, Gabrielle Bernstein) might be when I began carrying a bag of Doritos into bed with me at the age of seven. Each night, I would secretly snack on the hazard-orange cheesy chips while devouring chapter after chapter of The Baby-Sitters Club , repressing the guilt that came along with no one knowing my dirty little secret. This was the same time my parents marriage began to unravel. I would clutch that foil bag like a security blanket as I crunched in the dark while my dad moved his things first into the guest room down the hall, then into a bachelor pad in the city, then into a different house altogether.
Beginning around the same time, I began to suffer verbal and emotional abuse from someone I loved and trusted who used that lo
