My journey started three years ago when I discovered I had cancer. What a scary word! After seven sessions of chemotherapy and 14 litres of poison, I was in remission. I asked my doctor what my way forward was with regard to my diet. She mentioned immediately that sugar triggers cancer, and when I asked her about Banting, she gave me the thumbs up. I started the very next day.
I am loving the recipes and the kindness from my fellow Banters, and, three years after my cancer I am grateful for every day.

At first I’d buy everything that was posted on the Facebook group until my husband started complaining that I was spending too much. So I went the budget Banting route. I jumped from 106 kilograms to 64 kilograms in just over a year. I don’t remember a single day where I was ever tempted to cheat.

I can’t afford the expensive foodstuffs, so I use the Green List, enjoying mostly eggs, a variety of green vegetables, occasionally white and red meat, cheese, groundnuts, peas and plenty of water. Last year this time I was 87.9 kilograms, today I’m 60 kilograms. I’ve gone from a size 40/42 to a size 32/34. For many years I have been on a roller-coaster ride. Diet after diet, weight loss then weight gain. Fibromyalgia became my life along with its pain, brain fog and weight gain. I also realised I had insulin-resistance. Then I read Prof Tim Noakes’s explanation of insulin resistance and how Banting would help.
Very quickly I started to lose weight, counting the centimetres dropping off. I thought the scale was broken, I could hardly believe it!
I had been ‘nearly Banting’ for about a year so all I had to do was add the right ratios of fat. I wanted to learn the ‘whys’ behind it all and nearly four years later I am still learning. I lost in total over 33 kilograms but what I gained simply cannot be measured.

There are times in life when you decide to do something on thespur of the moment, having no idea that it is going to change your world. That is what happened in August 2014 when I started the Facebook group, Banting 7 Day Meal Plans. Little did I know that it would change my life and the lives of so many people. We have seen Banting go from being elitist to a lifestyle that can suit every pocket because Natalie, Kim and our dedicated group admins and I decided to take this route. Honestly, without these phenomenal people, bringing Banting to the masses would have been impossible. I don’t think I have ever been prouder of anything.

I was added to the group by Rita when she first started it, left, and then saw the light and re-joined. And boy what a light it has been! Not only has it changed my life and that of my family completely, but it has changed the lives of millions. From simple things such as being able to play with your child because you are not so out of breath to major things like members being able to fall pregnant when they had abandoned hope of ever having children, to prolonging the lives of grandparents. I hope that this book makes a significant difference in as many lives as possible and encourages those who previously felt it was difficult or impossible to start.

I started Banting out of sheer desperation. I was overweight and unable to shift that weight despite following a strict low-fat diet. As a mom of five, including my then one-year-old twins, I was always exhausted. I truly did not believe Banting would work. How on earth could eating FAT make me THIN? A friend suggested I join Facebook groups for Banting, so I did. But the people were so aggressive, fighting and abusing each other for their questions and choices. Until I found Banting 7 Day Meal Plans. The group was small and intimate, with Rita calculating ratios and handing out free meal plans. I found a place where I could be a part of helping others overcome the challenges I had when I started Banting. This book is another way for us to continue to do that.

The group is a safe space where we continue to share our experiences, our learnings, our failures and of course our successes, with the goal of helping as many people as possible restore their health and well-being. Its growth has been humbling. When so many people put their faith in you, trust the system and make every effort to get healthy and lose weight, it is inspiring. For the first year after the publication of The Real Meal Revolution, the main topic of conversation at dinner tables around South Africa was: ‘What do you think of the Banting diet?’ The result was that Banting enjoyed an almost viral spread across Southern Africa, changing lives in unbelievable ways.
The authors of this book, Rita Venter, Natalie Lawson and Kim Blom, were some of the many South Africans whose lives were dramatically improved when they adopted the Banting lifestyle that we promoted in that red book. Rita is known as an early adopter to new ideas and is also, by character, a leading revolutionary. She quickly began experimenting with the diet, and, once she saw the life-changing benefits of the hunger-busting, low-carbohydrate diet for herself and her husband, she began to wonder how she could help others achieve the same outcomes. How could she take the Revolution to other South Africans who could not afford to buy The Red Book?
She also realised that as good as The Real Meal Revolution is, it is not the final solution. While the science it presents is interesting and the recipes divine, there is more to preparing an eating plan than just opening the book and following the recipes. Adopting a healthy eating pattern after years of sickly gorging does not come that easily. One has to consider which meals to eat, and when, and how to properly balance this diet. Then there’s the issue of coping with the withdrawal symptoms caused by sugar and carbohydrate addictions. Isn’t there a great risk of scurvy and other vitamin and mineral deficiencies if one removes grains from one’s diet? Other questions arise. Can one eat fruit and use artificial sweeteners? And how do you cope with constipation? Is this because the diet is too low in dietary fibre? And ketosis… is it harmful? Then there’s ketotic breath, and concerns about blood cholesterol concentration going through the roof because of all that ‘dangerous’ fat in the diet. Surely that’s going to cause all Banters to die young, killed by the artery-clogging high-fat diets? Rita had heard it all, and so she took to social media to share her experiences and week-long meals for prospective Banters, launching the Banting 7 Day Meal Plans Facebook group.
Within a short time, she would be receiving up to 3000 requests for membership to the group, daily. As I write this in June 2019, the group membership is in excess of 1.7-million members. This spectacular growth is simply a response to who she is, and to her vision. Her motive is pure and she finds real
