Preface
There are various occasions when one needs to deliver either a long or a short speech in public. The occasion may be earnest, joyous or only instructive. That would depend on the situation when the speech needs to be delivered. A speech is to be constructed depending on the particular occasion and necessity of the message that needs to be delivered to the people who come to listen to you. But it is also a fact that everyone is not really gifted to make an extempore speech. It is also true that so many people may not be able to deliver a good speech even if they make adequate preparation, for delivering a speech involves so many traits and issues besides an appropriate and thorough preparation.
The only purpose of this well-conceived book is to extend help to the people who really desire to be involved with public speaking. If the book is read with adequate attention, care and appropriate mood, it will certainly help them to improve their public speaking qualities and will ward off their so many unfounded fears that usually surround them while delivering speeches to big or small gatherings.
It is just a basic truth that a good number of people certainly get several opportunities to speak in public but many of them turn such offers away as they cradle certain unknown fears in their minds. These fears are usually related to their way of speaking in public or not able to face the audience. Well, some people may simply ask, “Why should you need to make a speech?” The truth is that one really needs to speak to others at times as there is a need of that kind.
You really need to speak as you, as an individual, are an invaluable resource. One possesses plenty of good ideas that one would love to share with others so as to help them and make them happy. However, it is also a fact that very few people can say or speak their ideas to others in public even though there are hundreds of people who really want to listen to your ideas. Keeping that in view, I would advise you that you must learn the art of speaking in public.
The book has been totally designed to help all those who really want to be good at public speaking. It contains several tools, which if kept in view, will certainly direct on to become a good speaker in public. It is very much hoped that an earnest reader or a prospective speaker will surely get benefitted by studying it seriously, and will also be able to make a mark as a good speaker in public. For the benefit of the readers and for the advantage of all those who really desire to develop the art of speaking in public, connective steps are contained in it from chapter to chapter in a progressive manner. It will surely not be difficult to grow as a good public speaker, if only the desirous reader goes through each step attentively and convert it into action after practicing it for a while.
Most of the steps discussed here in this book, may look quite similar to as contained in some other books which also deal with the issues to help strengthen one’s speaking in public, but the reader will discover gradually that the way we have put them forward, is slightly different than the others have done. Ample of real examples of good and distinguished speakers who delivered their speeches at particular occasions and converted the mood of the audience in their favor, have been quoted by us at several places. It will help bring home ‘how a good delivery, can make a great difference.’ After reading all that and by going through the book seriously, the reader can judge that our convictions are correct to a large extent.
It is usually believed that good speakers are born and not made. On the contrary, great speakers are usually made if they really desire to become good in this field. At the end of the book we have also given some appendices that highlight very briefly the same issue ‘how one can grow as a great speaker’ and ‘how the unfounded fears that surround a speaker, when he/she starts talking on the stage in public, can be turned down.’ Therefore, read the book with utmost care, patience and concentration. The only thing you need, is to promote the belief that the art of good speaking in public can surely be cultivated. For that one must possess a strong desire and practice all the traits contained in the book. One of the Indian saints once reflected: “Only those who seek deeply, can certainly find Him.” So try seeking deeply to develop the art of speaking in public. You will surely get it. With this, the author sincerely thank the publisher to give him this assignment for the benefit of all those who desire to learn the art of speaking in public.
