Everyone is different, and everyone creates their own legal business with their own personality and their own style, however you may just find the next piece of life changing information that will make your career skyrocket.
No matter where you are in the world my friend, congratulations on having studied law and having achieved your law degree or diploma. It is a great achievement, never forget that; I honor and respect you.
On one hand it’s an exciting time for lawyers and legal firms, there have never been so many opportunities in the world of law, as there are today. On the other hand of course, it is also probably the worst time in living history to be a law graduate.
Many lawyers are stuck doing tedious, document-intensive contract work for as little as $25 an hour — not the worst job in the world, certainly, but not what many of them envisioned when they spent three years or longer of their lives and $150,000 to get a law degree.
Other law graduates around the globe are struggling to find jobs as paralegals; and many are working for free.
Then there are many small legal firms that are struggling to some extent, and about 85% I guess go broke in the first five years of starting up, because of the economy, competitors, not enough work, or some these lawyers simply don’t have any business sense, personalities, or go out backstabbing their competitors. Not good.
Enough of the self-pity parties, let’s get down to business, and make some massive changes to your career and your income. Let’s turn you into a Superstar lawyer!
I started my life in the criminal justice system as a cop when I was 18. I never really enjoyed school that much, and going to Law school straight after school was not my idea of having fun.
After ten years of law enforcement, prosecutions and studying law part time, for many years, I finally quit the force and studied another three years to achieve a law degree with honors.
When I first started out in this wonderful game of law, I was surrounded by people telling me even 20 years ago, that the market was no good, that there aren’t enough legal jobs, and that I am better off staying in the police force for the security.
I thought stuff the security; time to get out and time to shake up the legal industry a bit. I worked for a legal firm for about 12 months, got absolutely bored and was underpaid; so I left and started my own legal firm called MK LAW, in Melbourne Australia.
I read every book I could find on marketing, saw several marketing coaches, and attended hundreds of lectures on marketing, and everyone told me, “You lawyers are crap at marketing; there are so many of you, and no-one knows where you are”.
So I saw what real estate agents did and as a young bloke I put my heart on the line, got a credit card which I maxed out because I was broke, and put a smiley photo in about 40 papers around the state offering my legal services.
The phone did not ring, and I was still broke. I thought maybe the naysayers were right; I should have stayed fighting crime.
I then increased my credit card limit and advertised again, in all the community newspapers around the state, this time offering free initial legal advice and free after hour home visits. Boy, did the phones ring hot.
Being single in those days, I then socialized in all the right places, met some interesting characters along the way, and over the next five years or so starting representing high profile clients such as rock and roll superstars, sporting stars, and high profile professionals. I started getting so busy, that I had to refer work to many other lawyers who were struggling to get by.
I was surrounded by other lawyers complaining that work had slowed down and that the job was going down the drain, but the only thing I saw was a massive and continuous flow of new clients who wanted my services.
Every day I woke up, I was excited about my new venture, and I am still as exited today, as I was on day one. I let the world know that I was out there, and that I was prepared to help people who need my help.
I started writing free legal columns in the newspapers, became a legal commentator and editor for a National morning show, and produced my own legal TV show on public TV.
I then wrote a few books about success and about the law, and I have continued to balance my love of the law, with the love of writing, and speaking to audiences around the globe.
I was amazed what is possible with a simple marketing plan, and a daily positive blast of energy.
I’ve noticed in this great and wonderful thing called the justice system, there are generally two types of lawyers. There’s the successful lawyer who’s positive, confident and really believes in himself or herself, and then there’s the other guy, perhaps a mid-level associate who’s just barely has a law degree and who sits miserably in an office, feeling quite alone, and watching the clock hoping that the day ends soon, very soon, before he just keels over and dies.
This poor fellow doesn’t like where his career is headed. Perhaps he fantasizes about becoming a superstar lawyer, because then at last, something would be happening in his dreary day.
Unfortunately, this is what I notice in the legal profession. It is a sort of sink or swim, feast of famine type business. You are either very successful or just barely hanging on, waiting for something better to come along. If you deep down know you have been underperforming in your job as a lawyer, it’s not too late my friend.
I want to emphasize in this book is that there IS a way you can become one of those amazing success stories—one of the superstar lawyers —and start living the dream. You do have the ability to keep climbing higher and higher and to become a successful lawyer, with a new effective set of beliefs, expectations and amazing new results.
The key is to stop thinking just as a lawyer, and instead to start thinking as a marketer . Start thinking your way out of this “box”, that place you obviously don’t want to be in, and start charting a new course toward a rewarding life, this time as the glorious, respected and quirky TV lawyer that you always thought you could be.
This book is going to be the battery cable you need to jumpstart your motivation to achieve more. To get the high-profile clients you’ve always wanted, to win big name court cases, and to get those ego-stroking moments you’ve dreamed about, being interviewed on TV, getting a book in print, or you know, having your own melodramatic Matlock-victory in court. Whatever floats your boat.
Over the next 40 pages or so, I’m going to teach you six marketing secrets that successful lawyers all know, and yet sometimes avoid talking about to others. After all there is a competition there. Everyone wants to be number one and not everyone loves the idea of giving valuable information away for free. I personally think the playing field should be leveled. You should have access to the information we all have, so that you can use your own unique creativity and ingenuity to launch a successful career in the city and country you inhabit.
I really think that my legal career really took off so fast, because I was never on the competitive plane, but the creative plane of life. I want the best for everyone, for every lawyer on the planet, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.
I have written this book just as I would say it. As if were sitting down together, away from all the backstabbing lawyers, and we just chatted about my observations and experiences of my last 30 years in the criminal justice system.
I always knew I wanted success, and I believed I deserved success. How could I go to court every day just being “average”. “Average” will land most of my clients behind bars, or losing their licenses for extended periods of time.
