The new iPhone X's facial recognition feature is so sophisticated that it can't be fooled by the masks worn byMembers of the Black Lives Matter movement. The company has apologized for the problem. Here are the first two paragraphs of the same article written by a teenager who, to judge from her spelling and grammar, hasn’t taken a writing class since junior high school:TL;DR: The new iPhone X's facial recognition feature is so sophisticated that it can't be fooled by the masks worn byMembers of the Black Lives Matter movement. Notice what’s different about the two paragraphs. The first paragraph says what it means; it explains its main points and each of its components clearly. The second paragraph doesn’t say what it means; it doesn’t explain its main points or its components and instead tries to be clever with a TL;DR technique, which is a form of headline writer: say something in two sentences that can be said in one. The iPhone X's facial recognition feature is so sophisticated that it can't be fooled by the masks worn by Members of the Black Lives Matter movement. This is a bad joke.

The steel company innovated in the area of recycling its scrap metal. The company’s CEO, David, wanted to expand the business overseas, but he was advised by the board to first focus on domestic operations. David ignored the advice and invested in a new plant in China. Within months, the plant was operating at capacity, but the land for the plant had been leased for only five years. The Chinese government had only recently begun allowing foreign companies to own land, and David’s company was a foreign company. Because of the short lease and the company’s precarious financial situation, the board forced David to sell the land back to the Chinese government for a substantial sum of money. The first paragraph gives us a problem. The problem is that David ignored the advice of his board and invested in a new plant in China. The second paragraph gives us two outcomes: (1) the successful expansion of the business and (2) the sale of the land to the Chinese government.
