Description

If you want to read business books that tell you what to do, how to create a better business, how to avoid the pitfalls, don't read any of the 'Strategies to Go...' Strategies to go...like coffee to go...are stories you can take away, read on the go and draw your own conclusions based on what will work best for you and your business. They are based on true stories and tell it like it is--what really happens in business--allowing you to learn the lessons that fit your needs and the strategic needs of your business. These books are deceptively easy to read and therein lies their genius. You could choose to read the stories of the companies of Paul and Tom as just that--stories. The industrial espionage, fraud and betrayal that challenges their values and the telling drawn characters make for a good read. However, there are intelligently researched and imaginatively presented strategies that can, and ought to, be applied to any commercial organisation, or a not-for-profit (NFP) entity generating funds for societal need. I recommend this book equally to those who are in the commercial or NFP sector, where values and profit align to create balanced and sustainable entity. Diane Robinson CA specialises in the NFP sector.Chair of the Auckland Auckland's NFP Group.

These books are dedicated to the T-shirt leaders whose interviews are included.
They were prepared to tell their stories and share their experiences so you can learn, and so you know you are not alone in the problems and difficulties you face.
They know the Hard Knocks Café, have been there, bought the T-shirt and worn it to tatters…and they go on wearing it.

Preface
If you want to read business books that tell you what to do ‒how to create a better business ‒ how to avoid the pitfalls –don’t read any of the “Strategies to Go”.
They don’t provide road maps or instruction on how to create wealth, get more customers, or become an enlightened leader.
The Strategies to Go… are designed to is tell it like it is – what really happens in business – allowing you to learn the lessons that fit your needs and the strategic needs of your business.
They are novels based on the lives and businesses of real people and their companies and what has happened to them. Their frustrations and anger, exuberance of success, and pain of losing. Situations they have encountered, problems that have bowled them over, and triumphs they have achieved. The heroes and heroines do exist; they are a composite of all the companies, leaders and managers we have worked with over the years.
And we introduce you to some more of our T-shirt leaders. Experienced leaders willing to be identified and to share their experiences so you know you are not alone.
They know the Hard Knocks Café. Been there, bought the T-shirt, and worn it to tatters. And they go on wearing it.

Chapter 1

“No Animals Will Be Harmed…”
Through silent and dimly lit corridors, they followed in single file. Long corridors with the caustic smell of disinfectant and institutional cleanliness. Corridors that had seen the ages of generations pass through, some willingly, others not. Everyone was quiet, but the quiet was devoid of respect for their auspicious surroundings; it was the quiet of curiosity and an over-riding scepticism.
They all followed the white coated man, a pied piper of a man, leading the eight of them through a maze of corridors, past rows and rows of doors with small glass panels built into them. Nobody stopped to look inside. There was no sound. And the ‘Pied Piper’ lead them on, deeper and deeper, then around a sharp corner, and suddenly they were outside, facing a small courtyard, bare of decorative vegetation, just a small rectangle of grass in the centre of criss-crossed concrete paths.
And the ‘Piper’ led them across the courtyard along a path to their right, under an archway and then abruptly down a stone staircase at the bottom of which stood a large wooden door with iron cross-hinges bolted across the centre. None of the previous sophisticated electronic access methods for this door, the ‘Piper’ pulled a large bundle of keys from his pocket, inserted one into the lock, drew back the bolt, and with some considerable show of strength, pushed open the door.
It opened directly into a room which was dark except for a thin crack of light escaping through a gap beneath a closed door at the back of the room. The air that hit them was stale and dank. This was not a room often used. After groping on the wall for a few seconds, the ‘Piper’ located a bank of switches and flipped each one in turn. Harsh fluorescent lights flickered mercilessly, causing some to flinch and others to cover their eyes. When still, the lights revealed a ghoulish sight.
Long laboratory benches, each lined with jars of dissected specimens. Some were clearly small animals and reptiles, others were human body parts or organs but unidentifiable without examining the labels.
The reactions of each varied. Jeremy, Deac and Matthew were immediately drawn to examine the contents of the jars, Sam and James held back, but Abby recoiled. Richard and Tom just observed from the doorway.
On the front bench stood five jars. It was obvious, even from a distance, what these jars contained. Each held a human brain. Deac and Jeremy moved forward to peer at them more closely, turning the jars to examine the contents from all directions.
The door of the back room opened, and out stepped a small, elderly, white-haired man in a coat too long for him and a smile too big for his face, his cheerfulness incongruous in this laboratory of horrors. He stepped lightly and sprightly, the beam on his face lighting up further as Richard stepped forward to shake his hand.
“Richard, Richard, how good to see you again. Never thought I’d get you back in this room.” He laughed, shaking Richard’s hand heartily and looking around. “So, you have students of your own these days? Well, I never. Richard, a teacher – I’d never have thought it.” He beamed at everyone and despite their uncertainty, most relaxed and smiled back.
“If you’d known Richard back…”
But Richard laughingly cut across him, “Let me introduce my biology teacher from…some little time ago. Professor Simmons. Professor, let me introduce my ‘students’, they are the management team from Randalls Publishing.”
“Ahh, Randalls. Yes.” Mused the Professor but said no more. No further explanation was necessary. Everyone knew what had happened to Randalls.
“I’m going to let Professor Simmons give you a demonstration… No, don’t worry…” added Richard hastily seeing the look of horror on Abby’s face, “not a practical demonstration of dissection. But when he has finished, then we’ll talk.”
The Professor picked up one of the jars containing a human brain. “Who’d like a new brain?” The role of Media Channel Manager had been created after the Randalls-Magna takeover and Deac had literally exploded onto the scene. Even Abby enjoyed the lively perspective he’d brought. She was in closest contact with him, as their two roles produced a shared result. For Abby, this had been a challenge in the beginning as she had applied for the position when it had been created. She’d been reticent and withdrawn with him at first, but he’d attacked the situation with her head on. After a week of her tiptoeing around him, he’d come to her office, shut the door and sat himself on the window-ledge.
“Values.” He started, “The value and Values of Randalls is that they publish verifiable information. Truth,” and levelling his gaze directly at her said, “So let’s do ‘Truth’. You wanted this job. You didn’t get it. I did. Good decision – bad decision? We don’t know yet. Too early to tell. But the truth is that our roles are so entwined that we can be clever together, or fools apart. Which is it to be? You, me or we?”
And she’d laughed. And they’d worked together to create a combined plan of promotions, PR and media management. Abby had never felt so vibrant, that her purpose was so vital. He was right, together was clever, and innovative, and exci
